Hi Applecrate that Pontiac Funny Car of Jess Tyree was the first Funny to come to Australia it had a Canadian Pontiac engine in it, a big block Chev. When Jess did his first burn out, he stopped after the burn out and the crowd began to boo him. They all thought the car had broken, it was the first burn out most of the crowd had seen, they all started to cheer when he backed it up to the start line to do the run. I spoke to Jess many years later about it (around1994) and he said "Hell is that so, I wondered at the time why they were booing me". He put on a great show when he toured here, a nice guy as well.

  4. Kenneth- Thanks! I obviously have some learnin' to do to get some pics on this board. They seem to load different than other boards for some reason.

bobhoneybrook- Yes, by this stage he had switched to chevy power ( I would boo that too ).
This is actually a 68 Bird Funny that was somewhat converted to resemble a 69 and got a new paint job too. In early '68, it was 421 Pontiac powered ( blown on nitro ). To the best of my knowledge, it is the last surviving funny to be Real Pontiac powered. The only other possibility is Dan Gays 68/9 GTO ( whereabouts unknown ). Gay later switched to a KB 426.

  15. Here is an unusual twist. A sand drag car in motion. This is beyond rare. What you are looking at is a M/T HEMI Pontiac powered sand rail in 1967. Blown, injected on fuel! I currently own this engine. It is one of 2 or 3 complete Pontiac HEMIS ever sold out of Mickey shop in 1963. I am the second owner. Engine will be on display here in Phoenix April 5 and 6. 33HEMI, That Levec and Gouker T-Altered is quite an engineering fiasco. I know it's an "OLD" photo, but can you see it in tech today? Let's see; homemade coil over front shocks, using muffler clamps to keep the springs in tension, bolted on locator bar, the square tube, or is it angle iron, chassis, the front wheels reversed for clearence, and that helmet! The roll bar is period so can't fault that. What kind of times/speed was it capable of? And to think these guys on the HAMB can't get their HR dragsters through tech.
