Are awards/trophies really necessary? Do they have a place at Rod Runs/outdoor get-togethers? These are questions I've heard alot but are they just sour-g****s? I believe the money spent on trophies/awards would be better spent on items for drawings and goodie bags. What do y'all think?

I think that's why a lot of shows make the trophies now. Take some busted old parts, add welder (and a few beers), and there's your trophy. Have them pinstriped by the striper at your show in exchange for his vendor spot. I think car owners would rather have something creative to display rather than a store bought piece anyway.

As far as necessary? no they are not, but it nice to show a bit of appreciation for the select few.

I agree trophies ****.I chair a fund raising car and truck show, and if some of the old guys don't take home a plastic award they cry like babies. We make about $3000.00 for our charity and have to spend about $400.00 on awards.I've had car owners call me two months before the show and ask if the awards are going to be plaques or trophies and then ***** come if it's not the award they want. All in all we still we do make $ for our cause.

  5. I think it is more satisfying for the giver, than the givee... Unless the givee has some kind of warped sense of en***lement.

Then again, the only time I ever got a trophy at a car show, was when I parked my POS $500 '74 Datsun PU too close to the cruise night show cars, and they made me fill out a registration card, just so they could prove to the restaurant they brought in ** cars.

I still have it, cuz it's a good story. PU last about 6 more months before the trans went out, and it was parked, and abandoned and stoned to death with broken concrete by local hoodlums.

The people doing the shows make the call,,,some trophys,,,like the billetproof hand crafted ones are really cool and I'm pretty sure the winners ain't going to be hauling them to the dump next month.

I have been building hot rods most of my life and won a few DUST CATCHERS,,,most have been thrown away over the years,,,but are they necessary,,,NO

Who really cares?,,,just the guy that brought his ride in the weather tight box and hids it a few miles away and is only there looking for approvable from his peers.HRP

From a fella who's only won a few, it did kinda make me feel like all the sweat I put into it was appreciated by somebody else... that's about it. Homemade is cooler. The "spectators choice" is always the one I think is special, when everyone attending votes... that's kinda neat when you know average joe likes your ****.

  8. i like them , my wife hates them.. she calls me a trophy *****:D

  9. Trophys are "Great"...!!!

They can be used as "Walking Canes" for the Blind...Here "Dumb *****"... who's the only "blind female judge" for Mr. **** America... receives her new Trophy walking Cane!

They can be used as personal I.D.s for drinkin at the bar... (especially if they're Bowling trophys from that bar!!!)

They can be used for the "sodomization" of "CHEATERS CC" members..... (but you should use a 10 ft pole... and prefferably with additional protection!!!)

And finally... you can use them as "Currency" (here I'm buying a car with one... Pretty sweet deal Heh????)

Trophies are the worst part of putting on a show. It's a no win situation. We finally just had the ladies go out and make their selections...cutest car, prettiest color etc. etc. The egomaniacs couldn't get too mad at the ladies because they are not supposed to know anything about show cars anyway. Although the ladies can be the nastiest if their man doesn't get his obvious just due.:D

The only trophy that I ever coveted and didn't win was the beater contest at ***berland back in the day. I had a 47 Chevy Woody wagon with mushrooms growing out of the wood. I got beat out by a 4dr 34 Plymouth. I think it was the duct tape on the split seams. I should have left them be and let the stuffing come out of the seats.:D

Nice shot Steve, I guess a long time ago it was kinda a big deal, take your shinny car to a walmart parking lot show , sit there all day , rubbing on it,making sure every speck of dirt and dust was off it, Waiting for the big moment to come when they would do "trophy Presentations" God i 'm glad those days are gone ! Listening to all the whinning " how come he won , i should have, people just really got wound up about it. The home made stuff is cool though, we made the "Dash Spider" last year for Dewey, Mick always has cool stuff , now i gotta do one for this year, but they are fun to build !

  13. From somebody who has not won trophy.s,I don,t think they add anything to a show or rodrun.I don.t know if its some kind of sub concious sour g****s,but more times than not I look in bewilderment and think "who the hell picked these cars".I have got a sideways view of a good hotrod,I must have,'cause most times I just don.t get it?Rust rules!

Depends on how fragile your ego is. Man you should see allegedly adult people behave like crybabies when it comes to trophies, whingeing and whining like three year olds - throwing tantrums even. As often as not for a car they didn't even work on - just wrote the checks. It's really pathetic and ultimately sad.

It introduces a political element into shows and it all goes downhill from there.

I would far rather have somebody simply appreciate my ride than a BS trophy from a 'judge' or 'judges' who may not even have the first clue what they are really looking at. 'Nice car' and 'cool ride' mean far more than any trophy. I absolutely hate getting them and it is only out of good manners to the organizers of the show that I really reluctantly accept them. If I think I am in danger of being trophy-victimized, I usually try and leave before I get embarr***ed.

Cool doesn't need trophies. It's about the cars - not the damn trophies.

Community car shows offer some great opportunities for trophy presentations. Fire departments choses best flame job, PD gives out the "car I'd most like to ticket", Mayor's choice, Road & Bridges choose best truck, etc. Throw in spectators choice and you have an awards presentation that's fun and almost politically correct.

No trophies at the Jalopy Showdown. If you need a trophy, you are there for the wrong reason.

To me they're only necessary to attract the trophy hounds. If it helps draw cars to shows (where proceeds go to charity), I'm in favor of trophies.
I try to not register at cruises since I'm only interested in hanging out. The best award I've seen is given at a cruise near me - a $25 food certificate at the restaurant where the event is held, for "manager's choice".

Why else would you pay $25.00-$35.00 to sit in a parking lot with a bunch of ****s all day?

  19. Trophy Hunters are not a new thing.

This letter appeared in the September 1958 issue of R&C.

"Thumbing through my February R & C I happened across something that really rubbed me the wrong way. Your expose of the "no trophy, no show" boys who won't display their cars without being guaranteed an award. These clowns must have poor conception of what a trophy is for. They don't want a reward for the long hours of plannng and even longer ones of labor, they want it because it's "purty" and makes a nice decoration. Not only are these guys childish, but they're making the restyling field look pretty cheap. The credit should go to the fellows who did the work - in the bodyshops. Or at least the responsible shop's name should be engraved on the trophy. Anybody can pay to have work done, but it takes a real enthusiast to come up with a good custom of his own."

  20. i done both trophy shows and non trophy shows , i have to honestly say the best shows i have attended have been charity shows with no awards, just seems to attract a better crowd...

Not necessary at all. Any award/trophies should be a welcome surprise. It's nice to be recognized for a nice build, etc... but if you're going to shows just to expect an award/trophy I think folks are missing the point.

The trips in the hot rod and time spent with family and great friends will always out weigh that of some superficial award. :)

I'm not too keen on trophies, but if they are going to be given out, the hand made out-of-old-parts ones are definitely much cooler.

I've only received one trophy and keep it displayed because of the back story. A few years ago, there was a car show/music festival that tried to get off the ground in Ft Worth at LaGrave Field (Ft Worth Spring Rally). In year 1, it rained like hell and there were basically no cars there. I got soaked and was there all day because my band played.

So, year 2 comes along, the weather is much better and there are a few cars this time. They start handing out trophies and, to my surprise, the ol' Fairlane gets one. I was looking it over and realizing that there were probably only three cars in my trophy "cl***" then it struck me what they did. These clear lucite trophies had "1st Annual Ft Worth Spring Rally" etched on the front. They went back and added "2nd" at the beginning so the trophies so it said, "2nd 1st Annual Ft Worth Spring Rally". They re-used the previous year's trophies. Cl***ic!

If you show up just in time for the judging and then immediatly leave after reciving a trophy then you really have no clue.

If you ***** and whine that you don't get a trophy then you are going for the wrong reasons.

If you could care less if there are trophys are not and go just for the sake of being there then you are in the hobby for the right reasons.

Are trophys necessary...no but when somebody puts a lot of time and effort into something it is nice to get some reconision for it but I hate the guy's that are there just to win they make car shows boring.

we did one years ago where your entry fee was a trophy from home, didn't matter what it was bowling, baseball , car show what ever , then during the day you would go give it to some one else, funny deal.

I really dislike trophys. Especially if it takes 2 people to lift the damn thing! But then I'm the kind of guy that likes to show up at cruise night and look around ,visit and leave...before the raffle(unless I buy 50/50 tickets) I do the same at most shows...I leave when I've seen enough....That said ...there are some shows that mean more than others...at a show with 50 cars I don't think trophys are needed...but to get a trophy at Paso or the roundup or Billetproof is pretty damn cool. (as long as it fits in the car!)

Gotta have awards for the gold chainers, crybabies, and trailer queens. How else will they know if all the money they spent was worth it? It's kind of a justifacation if you will.

Now for those of us who build our own cars and drive them, no. I get more satisfaction from getting there than from being there.

Trophy *****s-what a waste. Yep, most events are put on for the excuse of getting together, and raising some funds for a charity/club. It is a lot of work, and expense for even small shows. So, you do what you must to get the most people there. Raffles, Trophies, food, vendors, games, etc.
Look at the winner of the Most Beautiful Roadster at the Pomona Grand National Roadster Show-the owner paid someone a fortune to build the car to win the trophy. What a waste, and a bling-bling car wins again.
No more best of show, best rust, etc. Just an appreciation plaque presented to 2 or so people that have their car entry number pulled out of a hat. Then give them a coupon for some goodie from a vendor or show sponser.
Also. make the official show time as short as possible, like 8AM -1PM. I hate sitting at any one place when I could be out cruisin' around. Don't leave early at longer shows because do not want to upset those running the show. Will not stay more than one day at a multi-day show, unless traveling with others that "have to" stay.
Thanks to those that do go through all of the work to put on shows, especially with a rock bottom entry price.
