I got this in the email the other day, and with all the talk lately about gas prices and the economy, I don't think it is off-topic... there are some good ideas, take them or leave them. We all need to do our part in my opinion... even small steps. I thought I would p*** it along. I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon. Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons. Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role. A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps. When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3) stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being ****ed up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money. One of the most important tips is to fill up when your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount. Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money. DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS! WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods. We should return the favor. An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS. Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia . Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis. Nothing is more frustrating than the feeling that every time I fill-up the tank, I am sending my money to people who are trying to kill me, my family, and my friends. I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil. These companies import Middle Eastern oil: Shell........................... 205,742,000 barrels Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels E**on /Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels Citgo gas is from South America , from a Dictator who hates Americans. If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now $90 - $100 a barrel) Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil: Sunoco..................0 barrels Conoco..................0 barrels Sinclair.................0 barrels BP/Phillips............0 barrels Hess.......................0 barrels ARCO....................0 barrels If you go to Sunoco.com, you will get a list of the station locations near you. All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers. It's really simple to do.
i recevied this email also awhile ago. good info.makes you think about all the bs that goes on in the world.
Wow. Thanks Greg. I wonder if some of that is really true. I have heard the "fill up in the morning" theory...

yeah, this is a popular spam that gets p***ed around. Most of the gas savings tips have been identifed through urban legend type websites as being true, but results in not much notable savings. But, i suppose every bit counts. As far as companies that use Middle Eastern oil-- that data is old. - First of all, only about 25% of total oil comes from the Middle East. Biggest other places include: Canada, US, Venezuela, Mexico, Africa. - Sunoco and Sinclair still do not use the Middle East as a resource for the oil they use. All the others listed in this message as zero do now. All said, once oil flow from Iraq goes back to normal (levels before US occupation) then i expect oil pricing will go down for a while. Destiny of demand exceeding supply will have it continuing to go up over the long term though. High gas prices ****. I'm excited about the alternative energy industry. -scott noteboom
.. That why I am building a hydrogen production and injection system for my car. Still building and testing but in theory it should work pretty well and at least double my mileage.
How much of this is legit? Enough to at least try to follow those simple rules? The fast lever vs/ slow lever has me wondering.
The difference in density of gasoline across the fairly narrow temperature range we are talking about rounds to 0. And @ the depth gasoline tanks are buried, the daily temperature swings again round to 0. BS.
Scott, now that "THEY" know we'll still sline up to pay $4.00 a gallon, do you really think they're going to ever reduce the price of oil/gas? Let's not forget the multi BILLION dollar profits E**on and some otherse reported the last few quarters. Profit.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/gasoline/saudigas.asp Debunks most of the "where our oil come from argument" but i see that Sunoco apparently does not import from Middle East.
Damn, you're getting me going... 1. First of all, i believe limiting supply in Iraq was done on purpose. Why does it appear that our government works for corporate interests (like E**on) instead of the peoples interests? 2. Once The Man stops limiting flow out of Iraq, supply will go up greatly-- and the cost per barrel of oil can go down, as could gas pricing. That said, the split of supply savings versus pump savings will likely not be equal-- so the oil companies can continue making equal / greater profits. What happens to things when the "other side" (in this case meaning the Russians, the Chinese and the Middle East) better grasp lessons in weaselry learned from US & corporations and learns how they can better manipulate commodity markets that they control (oil, steel, aluminum, etc) ? Then we're really ****ed. -scott noteboom
If you remember way back when when Indy car racing was really big and innovative some of the teams came to indy with refrigerated fuel tanks for their fuel. Why .. They found out that by cooling the fuel the could get more in the tank as it expanded as it got warm. Thats why if you fill all the way up in a car with a vented tank when its cold and let the car set in the warm afternoon sun you can have fuel running out the cap or vent.. Not rocket science it just works.. Dave
im just going out on a limb here..but isnt there a meeter in those pumps that is supposed to be inspected regularly? and isnt that meeter supposed to give you exactly the ammount you pumped? no matter if you pumped it at light speed or in granny mode? if so than WTF is all this **** about pumping on the first click to get the most gasoline in your tank..sounds like a bunch of B.S. to me.
Nixon/Ford Administrations. Rationing had been abandoned before Carter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1973_oil_crisis
Im pretty sure your right there but still if you fill way up and the fuel expands then it can seep out the vent. Its that simple.. Knowing the gas companys were not fooling anyone using those tips.. Your geting what you pump and paying for it too.. What ya really got to get used to is the price .. **** it... forget it we all need it and unless one of us low life poor *****s become president then were all ****ed. High gas prices high insurance (auto and health) yup were ****ed.. No since whining about it... I was actuall smiling about it yesterday when i got 55 bucks worth for 3.12 a gallon and I hear by me its down another penny today... Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. Dave
My son was in Saudi Arabia on buisness just before Christmas & he says they only have premium fuel in thier cars. It cost only 7 dollars to fill the average tank . Now doesn't that piss you off
Just noting. The Saudi's have very little to do with the price rising so high. They are producing plenty to supply their share. Supplies are just fine. It's the low dollar which is every bit as much our fault as anyones. If you wish to change that, November will be here soon enough. Throw them all out.
They need to do away with mid grade fuel...who do you know that buys mid grade fuel? I know plenty that buy cheap and plenty that buy premium. the mid grade fuel is just an added cost at the refinery that could go away...they need to think lean. also, california and a couple other states use a different recipe of gas. The nation needs to be on one recipe so that costs can stay down. Off the top of my head those are two things that affect gas prices besides the cost of oil, politics, and greed. I am sure there are more but the price of oil, politics, and greed are the main reasons gas prices are high and there is not a lot we can do about it.
Most folks in the upper plains states run Mid Grade since it has 10% Ethanol in it. Octane is usually 89 vs the 87 for low grade stuff. Plus in the winter you have less fuel line issues in the extreme cold.
To me it's all about oil co. profits. Yea the cost of a barrell of oil is up but so are oil company profits...guess it's time to buy oil stocks cuz they don't seem to ever lose money.
I think the oil barons are trying to buy the original '32 parts on ePay. supply and demand. figure out a way to demand less. carpool to work. One thought I had was this is a way to get 90% of America to go out and buy a new smaller "more efficient" car, after all those pickups and SUVs everyone bought the last 10 years. I am doing my part- I am putting overdrive in my coupe! LOL.
