The Drag-on-Lady. Shirley and her hubby sure ran some sweet cars. If memory serves me correctly, her last venture was an AMC Pro Stock.

Is this the Maynard Rupp hemi powered rear engined car? As I recall the body was fixed and must have been a real pain to work on and drive.

  7. Now which Faubel "Honker" is that? I thought he had the white stocker and the red AWB...

He had a bunch of them. That's his '64 Max Wedge hardtop. Then he had a '64 Hemi sedan. He also had a '32 Max Wedge, and although I never saw it, he probably had a '62 max Wedge also. Then he had a '65 AWB car, and then a '66 Dart with a long nose, which I think was his last racer. Bud was one of the true greats. As far as I know he's still around.

  9. That is the '64 Max Wedge car. I think it ended up with a Hemi later in '64. In fact now that I think about it this car became the twin turbo Hemi car with the '65 frontend later on. That was a very cool car. He didn't run it long as he could never utilize the available power. He intended to run it at Bonneville also. Bud had several B-body Honkers. His cars were originally known as "Tip-Toe" before the "Honker" era.

  10. Wow, synchronized posting Storm King..LOL He did have a '62 Max Wedge Dart. Also had a '61 Chrysler 300 that he did well with. Trivia: Anybody know what Bud did for a living besides selling cars?

Hey Troublemaker427; I see you're hanging around causin' trouble!:)
I remember Bud's venture with the turbo set up on his car. I think he was running twin turbos if I'm not mistaken, and he may have gotten help from the "Turbonique" company back in the day. It would smoke the tires the whole quarter and run crap et's but MPH like a fueler!

As I recall, the whole body tilted up like a Funny, only in reverse. From the rear. Rupp's a local guy and is still around. A friend lives across the street from him. I'll ask about it.

This is my personal all-time favorite drag car! I have movies of it leaving the line. Wow, what a launch! Great, wicked stance, like a little evil critter ready to pounce! Too cool!

Thanks Troublemaker do have a closer up picture of these wheels? I have searched the web and cant find a picture. Am I correct in assuming that these wheels are super rare and imposible to get ahold of?

  20. Here is a pretty decent shot. Yes they are very rare. I've never seen an actual set in person. I think they were steel and the mag and aluminum wheel companies were more popular. I'd like to see a set if any exist. As you can see here Sox ran them early on also.

Bud Faubel also had a '62 300 with the big cross ram intake as I recall. Besides Jenkins being involved with Bud's cars in '63 and '64, one of the real unsung but very sharp guys in S/S-F/X histor was on his crew and others ... George Weiler. George did alot of the prep work on the '65 AWB car, the '66 Dart and the '64 Hemi Honker sedan. He also drove that car (white '64) a number of times.
George was also wrenching with Harold Ramsey when Ramsey won the 1959 NHRA Stock Eliminator title at the Detroit Nationals that year.

  23. That's a recent picture of the car. I don't think they are Howard wheels on the car now. Brent Hajek owns the car .

  24. Joel, the car I'm thinking of may have been a '62. Did he have a '61 and a '62 300?

Do you know the trivia question?:D

I'm pretty sure he had a '61 and maybe a '60 Dodge. He ran cars on the beach at Daytona in the speed trials too.

The trivia question? I missed seeing it!

Now that I think of it ... I'm not sure about the big Dodge 300 that Faubel ran. I know he ran one but I'm not up on those '60-'61-'62 big Mopar years. He ran one just like the one that Hot Rod magazine ran and tested, Ray Brock I think.

Yes, Howard wheels. Nicholson's were different than most as they were flat centers, not dished like most. Not sure if his were special items or what. In those days one could buy cheap knockoff copies of them at almost any auto accessories/parts stores. I had a cheap set on my '64 Comet HT street car. They disappeared from the scene pretty quickly.
