I should let Bob post this himself but I can't resist ... Looks like Bobby Fermier doing the driving here at Bailytown Good Time Drag Strip, (NC or SC?). He's out on the GTO and looking over at him ... love it. This car really ran and did alot of winning throughout the South.

  5. Mike, good to see you here!!! Like I said before, lots of knowledgeable people here on this thread and you are top of the list when it comes to AFX cars!!!

  6. Here is one of Bob racing Bonner. The story I heard was Bonner's match race opponent broke so Bob filled in. Bob was a little out gunned... Not sure of the spot but probably a few lengths...

  7. Ok, I'll try this again. Not sure what happened the first time??

Ronnie Sox was Bonner's opponent that day and Bobby said that Sox spread the rosin for their '62! That shot should show Sox in a cowboy had standing behind the Fermier Bros. car.

Bobby's late brother Harry took alot of great photos in those days. He had saved almost every memorabilia item and time slip they ever got. Harry ran an Honest Charley Speed Shop in Jacksonville, FL for a number of years.

  13. That's it!! I couldn't find it... I think that shot is from the Detroit Nats. The early Eastern Drag News are full of mentions of this car. He was pretty much unbeatable at Mason Dixon and York. 948 is Bud.

  15. Mike, your photos might be above the size limit to post. The G. C. car looks great over in the intro section. I'm coming to the Hemi reunion in August just to see the '65 cars together!!!

Hey, Mike; good to have you here! You may not remember me so let me refresh. I met you in '92 at the Mopar Nat's where you were displaying the '64 Ramchargers car with the '65 nose. My family was the second (and last) owners of the "Black Arrow" car of Doc Burgess. I also sent you a pile of old Easten Drag news publications several years back; I think during a time you were digging up some of Jimmy Lytle's "Big Al" cars. Anyway I've moved from Tulsa to the B.G. area in Kentucky now. If there's anything you think I can help you out with let me know.
I'm building a '66 period funny, a Dodge Dart; stretched wheelbase, injected max wedge car for fun.

Will it be at the All Hemi Reunion?I have a set of blueprints for the 64 2% cars.

  22. Wow!! The 65 GC AWB car sure has come a long way since early last summer when I saw it at the Commandos reunion at the CEMA show. Please tell me that's the same/original car! Ray Kobe and the crew have gotta be groovin on that. Great work.

It is the car you saw at Auburn Hills it just weighs about $25,000 more than it did then.

  24. My hat is humbley off to you sir! Thanks for restoring a piece of history. I'm kind of a Commandos fan. My 65 Belvedere in 64 GC livery was parked near your unrestored original at that show. I didn't ask to park there. among the "real" cars, but the guy directing traffic told me to, LOL. I sure didn't want to argue with him! I gotta admit that I felt a little goofy about it, but what the hell. It was a fun day and some of the GC member's family's liked getting their pictures taken by it.

It looks pretty good in the pictures but it sure isn't perfect by any means. I am not much into over restoration I like them to look about like they looked when they were new.

  26. Mike,
I'm glad to hear you say that. My memories of a misspent youth at Detroit Dragway remind me that most of those cars were pretty rough by the summer of 65. Long before the days of enclosed transport and paved pits.

Race car restorations need that "edge" to them. Cars that are over restored, without the correct suspension, stance or just letterd up with modern wheels/tires, details, etc. are pretty boring in my opinion.
I'd love to see some restorations done of some of these cars as they were cut up and rough, like some of the NASCAR Ultra Stock cars were. Of course there are preservations of some cars that are out there that I think are terrific ... the Kentucky Colonel '65 Dodge is one that comes to mind.

I do realize that dollar values come into play once a restoration is under way. So much for history.

That picture of the '60 Ford reminds of one that ran at Detroit and was sponsored by Mayfair Ford. I just remember seeing pictures of it but not seeing the actual car.

I agree Joel, there's a few cars out there that are ruined because they got over restored. The Lindquist Mr. Tomato comes to mind.

  30. I also agree with you guys about over restored race cars. A prime example of this is the '65 Comet of Dyno Don !!!
