I'll be leaving San Diego about the end of July and moving to Camp Lejeune or close to it. So I'm wondering where would be a good place to find a home for rent. My rent here for a 650 sq ft with one car garage house in SD for 1800 bones. What can I expect in and around the area, I need some recommendations fellas, please help. Also anybody work in the Aerospace industry, I'm a Jet-engine mechanic, probably gonna be looking at Cherry Point MCAS for employment. Still debating on taking my coupe, don't have any room to transport it to NC.

    Thanks

  2. You can expect a lot less expense in NC . My dad lives in New Bern NC . His house would cost 3-4 times as much in San Diego . By the way he worked for GE Jet Engine Flight Test in 40'-60's at Edwards AFB . Knew all the greats , Yeager , Crossfield , Poncho Barnes etc .

  3. you are gonna like it so much better in the south.. dont worry about it you got to get away from military bases as the prices on property and rentals sometimes reflect that.. welcome to the south!

    Welcome

Will you be at LeJeune or Cherry Point? It can make a difference!

If LeJeune you have Jacksonville (including Richlands suburb?), Swansboro (Beach town, can be pricey, not as bad as SD), or any of the outlying county areas.

If Cherry Point, New Bern would be the best bet, but Havelock, Morehead City, or Swansboro is a possibility. My wife has an old college friend that works at MCAS Cherry Point and drives from Swansboro. 'Bout an hour through the country, but he wanted to be near the beach and all.

Of the above, Morehead City would be the #1 choice for selection, but its a beach town, so it will be more expensive. For the money, I think New Bern would be my pick. Less than an hour to the beaches, Greenville, and Goldsboro, around 2 hours to Raleigh and Myrtle Beach, and still close enough to Jacksonville if you have military business to tend to.

As you can see, I'm in Greenville, so If I can help, I'll do what I can.

    Welcome to NC!

Welcome to NC, We moved from Cali in January 07. You will love it here, not just the prices but the people. We are about an hour and half from New Bern so please stop by HAMBers always welcome.
Sorry, not close enough to recommend any housing. Look out in the country, some real bargains available ($6 or 700/month) if you don't mind a 20-30 min drive.

Plenty of Drag Racing in that area too. Check IHRA.com for track listings. You can kiss that high rent good-by,and with a little searching find deals half that !.

Get ready for something called "humidity"... which stays around 300% year-round in that part of the country. It will be quite a change from SD and SA.

Top of the morning to you. I used to live in Jacksonville, two miles from the main gate of Lejeune. I was there for about two years working for a defense contractor before transferring back to VA. I have not been there in about a year or so, but there are [were] a few options. As someone stated above, Richlands is an outlying area that is not too far. I had a few friends live in Swansboro, which, depending on where you decide to work, can be kind of half-way between the two bases. I remember after one of the hurricanes there were tons of good deals on oceanfront property, but I'm sure that time has come and gone. Also check out Hubert, Holly Ridge, North Topsail (beach area, probably more $) and even Emerald Isle (another beach area). All in all, you do not have to worry about paying as much as you did in SD- no where nears it in fact. I rented a one bedroom apt for $375, but it was sans garage (and back in 2003). I'm sure you could find a good deal on renting a house, with lots of homeowners being military, there are lots of places that the owner may be deployed or stationed somewhere else and they are searching for an occupant. How long are you planning to stay? Is buying out of the question? Good luck.

you should have brought your car ,you we miss it alot ,the back roads are great around the area you are going to.
Anyway its alot cheaper to live here than what you quoted ,

    Rockingham....Raleigh....Benson....

Lived in Rockingham for 7 years..in the gray house in front of Rockingham Junior High (if you're facing the school, the one on the left)....

Raleigh and Benson not far at all from Greenville, where I have been living for the past 7 years. Looks like a pattern....hope not! I'm not ready to move! I'm in Raleigh quite often, especially in the fall.

Got plans for April 5-7. Have always wanted to go. Ain't it funny, live within an hour of an event and never go. Now I'm over 3 hours away and would love to make the trip.

My Mom-in-law lived in Austin for several years. Went out to visit one summer. EVERYTHING is bigger in Texas...including the HUMIDITY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just ran across this.....I live in Richlands which is about 20 minutes west of Jacksonville. If you are gonna be working in Cherry point you are better off around New Bern as posted above. Swansboro/Cape Carteret may be OK but you'll still have a lil drive. Jacksonville has a strong car scene to be its size and rodders are starting to pop up everywhere esp. in Wilmington. Thats about an hour south of J-ville. Check out Port City Maulers on myspace. As far as housing.....if ya look outside of citylimits you should be able to find double the sq. footage for half the price.

Cool thanks for the advice fellas I'm definitely going to be messaging y'all.
My boss here at March AFB said he could get me in at Seymour Johnson so I don't mind the drive. My wife is actually active duty Navy and I'm a Air Reserve Technician for the AF. So Cherry Point may be out of the question. North Carolina, sounds good, I'm used to the humidity I am from South Texas so I don't mind. I appreciate everyone's response and we may buy a house out there, we will be there for 3-4 years, hope to meet some good people.

So how about salvage yards, cars, what can I expect?? Plenty, slim pickins like Cali????

Wow man. You are really moving around the country getting a taste for all the hot rod sceenes. Does that mean you will or will not be going to the roundup? You could drive your coupe out, getting it half way to NC, and leave it with a friend until you get it the rest of the way.

    Good luck on your move!

    ...oh.. and WIFE?? Congrats!!

I pretty much do not some out side from May through December because of the heat! If you open your window for fresh air you will be greeted by the "hum" of central air from everyone in the neighborhood. Kidding aside, it's great here. I am sure it's a couple notches down from what you are used to in San Diego in terms of Hot Rodding (Events, Quality of Cars, & Number of people) but the Deep Fried Pickles will make up for that. I complain about it a bunch but that is because I live in a soul-less city that is run by banking yuppies. Outside of Charlotte, it's gravy.

Few and far between for actual decent salvage yards, there are a couple, but there are plenty of private stashes. There is a rust problem in NC. I know it's O/T, but one of the all time great AMC yards is in the Goldsboro area, AMX's, Rambler's, and on and on...

I'm just down the road from Cherry Point Marine Station in New Bern.

I would advise looking in Newport as Morehead is a beach town (as mentioned) and New Bern is more of a retirement community. Rent/housing is about the same for both New Bern and Newport anywhere from $650.00 to whatever you want to pay. IMO, there is no way I would live "in" Jacksonville as driving is a nightmare.

If you need information about the area...housing, schools, etc. e-mail me and I will gladly provide what you need.

There are local car clubs and as mentioned, 2 local drag strips...one in New Bern and the other in Kinston www.kdsmotorsports.com

You'll love it in NC and you will be quickly introduced to the State Bird...mosquitos:eek:

  23. Cherry Point and Lejeune are poised for an influx of 19,000 additional personnel in the next couple of years. Last I heard Seymore Johnson was slated for closure with facilities to be moved to Ft Bragg and Pope AFB. If you find you need to be in or near Jacksonville I'd recommend the outlying communities like Hubert or Richlands but even they will be filling up soon due to the new troops. My mother-in-law has a small home for sale on about a acre just outside of town for around $60k. Its a double-wide with no garage but plenty of room for one. If Cherry Point ends up your destination then I too would recommend Newport, Morehead City or the Wildwood community. Prices will be higher closer to Morehead and Atlantic Beach. There are some great bargains to be had in downeast Carteret County where I live and the commute is a cinch down highway 101. The Harlowe community is another viable option for you and only 10 miles from CPMAS. My sister is a local realtor that would be glad to help you out. True we have humidity here but we also have the best fishing, sailing and diving in the US to go with it. The surfing is so-so most of the time but we do get killer swells now and again. The ocean temp is warmer than that in Cali. Keep in mind you will be moving to hurricane alley but on the other hand we don't have earthquakes, mudslides or blizzards. Floods are few as are forest fires in this area. Most of the old tin around here returned to the earth as rust long ago. Bare metal won't last here. Salt air is unforgiving and habit forming. So be warned...you won't want to leave.

Hey Zman....You referring to the "old AMC dealership" in Pikeville? That guy has a ton of stuff and a cl***ic sports model convertable AMC (never seen one before) stored in his shop. It's show car quality.

I live in Jacksonville, NC the home of Camp Lejuene and MCAS New River. I've been in the aerospace industry for 27 years. I work at MCAS Cherry Point as the Integrated Maintenance Program Lead for AV-8B Harrier. Are you coming out of North Island? Shoot some info to my work email. let me know what engines and aircraft you supported and for how long? I'll put out feelers and check to see what's open or opening.

My daughter was a Realtor up until a year ago. I'll ask her to check with her sources on the dwellings.

I'll be traveling to San Diego, Yuma, Pensacola, and possibly Indiana during the next 2-months. You can reach me by cell.

Whoa! I should've read the whole thread before I posted my previous reply. Seymour Johnson will put you near Kinston, NC and there's some good car and bike happenings in the area. There's some tin in area. Several gems frequently come up for sale in the Carolina Bargain Trader http://www.cbtmagazine.net/ . Mostly the really good stuff can be located through networking.

hahaha i was wondering if the bargain trader was still around. i found my '64 wildcat in the bargain trader as a runner driver for..............$450. bough plenty of other stuff out of it to during my 4 years in greenville, year in wilmington, and 2 years in ahoskie before moving to the western side of the state.

alot of that old tin in the kinston area spent some time under water back in the late 90s. 2 of the yards i used to love were under water for almost a month. those were bad times.

i moved up here form alabama mid 90s and i love it here. i've traveled all around the country and i honestly have no desire to leave nc...ken....

Zman - You have the info on this place? I ran by it with my old roommate when we got my 65 Cl***ic 770 parts car but couldn't find anything around to get contact info. In fact, most stuff is rotted over due to lack of care of the area if it's the same one we saw. But now that I got the 770 project at my house I'd like t check on some parts.
