Our club, the Snohomish Rod Angels, is planning one similar to this for later in the year. Sounds like a lot of folks are thinking the same thing...static shows are just not much fun.
I just asked for the opinion- I'm WAYYYY cool with that. Raffle idea is cool. Like that. Water transfer decals are one of my weekness' too.
Sounds like a blast! I do enjoy driving them (althogh I value the exercise I get from walking around the bigger shows). What time of year are you looking at doing this? This year or next?
How about the weekend before or after Santa Maria- starting at the North side base of the Grape Vine pass? Directions on where it heads north from there.
HELL YA! I go to shows every year in Utah and Arizona just for the drive. Did Americruise 8 years ago and still remember every detail of the trip. Cant say the same for regular car shows, they all blend in together in your memory.
We used to put on a Road Rallye as part of our rod run, with tough, obscure, directions that ran people all over, but the end was food and really good prizes-welders, floor jacks, and other really useful stuff. It's popularity dwindled as the car show crowd took over, as they didn't want the challenge or the drive, so it finally died (like real street rodding did). The people that participated had the best time of the year, and the hard core looked forward to it. Do it and you'll create the best event of the season while having a great time.
The weekend before Santa Maria, is a SCTA meet at El Mirage, and the weekend after is Pomona Swapmeet. I always go to el mirage and my broke-ass needs to sell some stuff at Pomona. Maybe more of us have the same obligations.. The first weekend in June maybe?? All the high desert guys can meet up and caravan to a meeting spot with the LA guys somewhere along the way. I vote for a BBQ and decals too.
You are onto it. Personally I get pretty bored with static outdoor car shows where cars are just parked in a field all day. 1 lap and you've seen everything... Check out our event which goes for 5 days. www.beachhop.co.nz Each day we have a cruise - Wednesday 30km cruise to a Beach Resort - band playing right on the beach Thursday 220km drive through a number of Beach towns with stops for lunch etc. Friday 15km crusie to a Beach Resort - 3 bands playing right on the beach Saturday - Grand Parade in Beach resort town - 20 bands Sunday - Car Show at the Beach - 6 bands playing We have just under 1200 cars entered - not bad for a country with a population of 4 million. There is an event like this up here in the Northwest only for motorcycles. It is called Lawman 1000. Check it out. http://lawman1000.com We have a lot of fun and get good eats and prizes at the end. It supports great charities as well. The route is a mystery until the morning of registration. The destination is known ahead of time so that hotel reservations can be made. Tons of fun!
Jim, Not this year, but next year is open. Got nothing going for then. I've got all my plans made for this year. I'm one of those guys that has to plan ahead. Grab a bunch of you left coast guys and come back to the HAMB drags. They would love it. Plus there is one hell of a swap meet the same weekend in Springfield.
sounds neat! If you're ever going to do rural Nevada, don't do it in the summer!! I always thought Goldfield Ghost Town would be cool for something like that. http://www.ghosttowns.com/states/nv/goldfield.html Great music! HAHA! More on that... http://ourworld.cs.com/goldfieldnevada/home.html http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Goldfield,+NV,+United+States+of+America&sa=X&oi=map&ct=title http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldfield,_Nevada
I am in for sure, and if all the San Diego folks want to meet up down here then caravan up to L.A. that would be even better. Great Idea!
OK- lets start gathering some names and try to get at least 100 cars registered and can move on from there. So a registration will get you 2 food tickets and a water transfer decal from the event. There will be T-shirts if you wish to buy them at the end destination or can pre-order with your registration guarantee you get one (on you WILL want one because HAMB artists like Jimmy Smith and Jeff Norwell will fight to the death in a cage to get to draw it). Look for an interesting end location with plenty of nearby lodging (want to soak in the whole day and evening in these destinations) with some live entertainment and good food. Can have a few vendors too if interested. Should be a TON of fun and a great way to enjoy your vehicles. Thanks Jim
Our local club has done this for years with minor variations, depending on who's running it. Most of the time we receive coded instructions to follow - i.e. "Go 10 miles east and turn left just past the stone fence in front of the old farm house" with a busted silo" or "turn left on the road with the name that reminds you of a cemetary (Monument Rd.) or something similar. Every so often we'll have a check point and receive new directions for the next leg of the trip. Given out at the start, is a sealed envelope with enough information to get you to either the next check point or the end of the tour, but anybody that turns up with an opened "panic" envelope gets a lot of good-natured shit, of course. One time when I ran it, I made up 4 separate sets of instructions (without telling anyone), so people couldn't just follow one another. It was a blast watching people follow you and all of a sudden turn around because they figured you were fucked up! All the directions used common check points. Realy screwed them up. On ocassion, we also hand out a playing card at each check point and have the best poker hand win a prize at the end, as well as whatever other prizes were awarded. Naturally, in true old car spirit, every tour ended at a restaurant for a good meal.
I suggest Tagman's got it. Work some variations into it so that it's a bit different each year. Have a "picture" door prize. Have people to take pics of certain things, (or combinations of), on thier routes to get that prize. Do the poker run style with cards handed out at checkpoints. You could really make this work, but I suggest the "target" town needs to be given a heads up so the local sheriff doesn't get bugged. Roger
count me in. when i was riding street bikes, they had one and two day events all the time. never have figured out why it did not catch on in the hot rod scene. one caution, one ride had a secret overnight, when we got there, all the rooms were gone, several other events same day!. another half hour ride to next town after that they disclosed the turn around, route was secret till you started the day.the best ones ever used carson city nv. or salinas as stops.when are we going ron
So if the run was on the 7th, those that wanted to go to the Antique nats can still do so. I guess that depends on where we end up.. I'm in with at least 2 cars. And I would want to stay overnight if possible. I guess we need to start looking at places to go.. I'll crack out my AAA travel guide to see what is out there.
Well, just about EVERY weekend is taken in So-Cal, so this one works well as you will already be staged in close enough proximity (50-60 miles north of the drags) to attend the Nationals on Sunday after having a blast driving and partying on Saturday. WIN-WIN!
There's an old Mining town called Randsburb, off the 395. Not much there as far as eateries but it a cool town.
Actually, that's one of the considerations- whether it's this year or in the future to be decided. Plenty of small towns with all the charm of Paso- with a little more rough edges and less tourist shops- AS IT SHOULD BE!
If you remember, last year I did the Bun Run,that started in San Pedro, went down the coast and ended at a sandwich shop in Mission Viejo. Shirts were $10 and lunch was on you. I've been planning Bun Run II,but would put it on the back burner to join this...
Sounds like a good time. My only problem is Ive got a baby due in mid June. Might put a damper on things, unless theres a doctor going on the run.. hhmmm... Put me down as tentative
