Hotroddanny, do you have a more specific description of the malfunction? Might help people know if they can help you.

  6. I guess I'm just old-fashion or my dumb-ass is just stuck in the sixties. If I have to use a four-banger it will have to be a Chevy-II with the marine cyl head.Blueprint the engine, cam it up,juice the ignition, pick a decent manifold and carb. These things hauled ass in a big heavy ass boat and if you ever built performance boat engines you'll know how much drag a boat has. Put one in a light weight roadster and you'll have the shizz-nuts set up>>>>.

  7. I used to race these things. To the tune of 13-1 comp,600 lift, chevy 2.02-1.60 valves, hunt magneto, alcohol injected, and so forth.Tell us the problem maybe I could give you some advice>>>>.

What metalshapes said, page one. Top choice, hands down. Cheap, exotic, runs like a scalded dog, and great economy. Number two, a 2.2 Mopar, number three a 2.something Ford. All good motors.
    But Alpha is the bomb!

2.5 Chevy Iron Duke in stock form will run CIRLCES around that 2300 ford pinto crap. Ask TomH he has both of them in cars.

Absolutely 2.3 Ford. I have one in my 46 Ford pickup. They're bulletproof. 200 thousand miles on mine, and it's still running strong.

Nearly 30 mpg, 102hp, and turbo options are available for it.
The four speed overdrive trans that usually comes attached is a keeper as well.

Honda S2000. 240 Hp stock with a 6-speed. we're running one at El Mirage in a 29 roadster, was points champ a couple years ago (Callaway). easy bump up to 300hp. and they're rear wheel drive! I just bought another complete wrecked car off egay for $2200, they're starting to get affordable.

Holy crap this is an old thread, and all this time I thought my four banger was different.

  14. I have a rusty Mercedes 240D with a perfect-running 4-cylinder diesel that I plan on pulling and sticking in something, should be good for close to 50mpg if I put it in something light.

  15. Even though I raced a 2300 I spent every night at the race track chasing a pontiac 2.5. Four banger hot rodding just two words Duke and Deuce!!!!

I liked the quad 4 roadster I saw but the name "Okie Offy" is what I remembered best.

  17. Just won an Olds with a Quad4 on Espay for peanuts...

now I just gotta get to Tampa to get it:D!

Does anyone remember the article in Street Rodder about the fellow who hand bent a water pipe for a Quad4 he was"back-dating" for a customer (building a 20's style sprint)? I would like to find the article AND find a way to contact the gentleman to find out more about the build.

Ultimate HP/MPG, Cummins 4bt hands down, and there are endless tranny adapters so you can bolt anything to it. If not a cummins, any Cosworth 4 Banger will do just fine. The occasional model B is nice too.

Honda seems to be beating all but the 2.3s were beating the stock block chevy.our 4 cylinder street stock means just that STOCK.no doubt that running one of chevys hipo blocks you can outbuild a ford 2.3

Ok, i said Stock.. TomHs T has a 2.5 in it and has alot more power than his model A does, and the As 2300 has a cam, intake and header on it...

the chevy is a better motor.

  23. Great to see this post up again!

Just got a Quad4 for my T Speedster- will post pics of the mock-up when I get a chance.

  24. So at 3.85 a gallon and me being a family guy I do believe a 2300 ford is in order for my next build. A buddy has one in his T and I gotta say it sounds sexy on open pipes. So were is the best place for intakes and headers and other goodies. Does anyone make an aftermarket valve cover? Hell if I get it together and its not fast enough I can add a turbo!!! Besides its going in a touring car with a hood. So all the hater's won't see it and bitch they'll just wonder why I never seam to stop for gas. This is a car I am building to take places, Austin, Bonneville, Hot-rod-orama. I already collected up a vette 283 and muncie 4 but fuck I want to drive the piss outta this car. Sure every guy wants a hemi with six twos but do you want to take out a second on your house so you can drive from Cali to Texas? I know I don't want to!!!!
    Thanx

  25. Esslinger in california has tons a shit for the 2300. Schoenfield in arkansas makes headers to fit anything with wheels and probably some shit without wheels!! The 2300 is a pretty easy engine to find and they are really reliable. There is a wide variety of aftermarket parts to juice em to any level, and they should make some mileage. I raced these for years as I said in previous post but I still like the chev-2-140 marine>>>>.

  26. bump...

I'd be thrilled to death with $2 per gallon gas right now!

    whoopsie daisies

Working on this one for a customer. Has a Turbo 350 behind it and runs and drives fast enough. Don't know about MPG, But does look good with the full hood closed. Ted

More often than not,a modified small normally aspirated 4 cylinder engines used about the same amount of fuel as a larger slow turning V-8 of the same power. The hi reving 4 will be more fun with a 6 speed if you like to rev em up.
Small turbo engines deliver decent fuel mileage and power. For example the new Chevy Colbalt boy racer with a 260 hp 4 cylinder turbo pushes the 2900 lbs Colbat through the 1/4 at 14 flat,102 mph, gets 25+ when driven at leagl speeds. Now this is a modern areodynamic car,an old rod with an upright body style will have way more drag at hiway speeds.
Light cars get better mileage in town,on the hiway,a sleek body uses less fuel even if it's heavier.
