Help how do you eliminate oil filter 8BA

Okay I did a search and didn't find my answer and was wondering if anyone could help point me in the right direction here. I want to eliminate that big ugly canister filter on my 49-51? 8ba truck motor. I have heard there is a right and wrong way to do this?? I don't want to just plug the holes in the block if that is going to fuck up the motor. I guess I could move the filter to a remote one if I have to, but most people say just change the oil often. My car is a 31 tudor no hood.

I don't think you want to plug it. Might want to run a line between the two holes.

 

Mines been plugged for years. No problems.

 

No! No! - Do NOT run a line between the two holes. The exit or return line from the filter goes into the side of the block where it dumps directly into the oil pan. This would cause a loss of oil pressure.

 

The oil filter was optional from ford on the 8ba.

 

Plug the dang holes. I did it on the "Rocky 33" [TM] [59-AB motor] and suffered no ill effects.

I had better luck with an 8ba with no filter than one with a filter. Ok , I know compltely different motors, but still the one without a filter still ran when I got done with it. I just changed the oil alot.

That's one of the reasons those engines had the oil changed every thousand miles when they were new. filters were optional and didn't work all that well on a lot of cars back then. One of the rasons they were called "partial flow filters".

I little chunk of dowel or a #2 pencil ,ball peen hammer...

Now that's funny, those #2 pencils can be used for just about everything, I have one in my shotgun.

Rudgeman, do some searching on the remote filters, they probably don't work too well with the original filter setup. The outlet on the back of the motor is actually a T where the oil goes in to the motor and some comes out to the oil filter and back to the pan.

Here is a link to a site that has a good description on how to do a remote filter. They still only call this a 95% filter because by the time the oil makes it to the filter the rear main has already seen it.

Don't run a line between the holes, racers have been plugging them for 50 years or so, The one in my A has been plugged for 2 years and 8000 miles, 35 pounds oil preasure at idle and 55 at speed. The 8ba filter is good only for storing small tools but even then, it's still ugly. Just change the oil every 1000 miles or so, and you need to do that even if your running the crappy filter.

 

How do you know that?

 

I think when it's all cleaned up nice that old cannister is a nice piece of rollin' artwork......and it is a little bit functional anyway. A couple of new decals and a little powdercoat works wonders.
