Brother Hungus- Great stuff man! The title makes the piece.

Well you guys might remember these pieces a few weeks back. I drew them on the Nintendo DS. Well I took them into Photshop and Painter and finished them up. The truck is still a WIP. They are going to be a gift for my friends new baby boy. These are also going into a book I am doing for the LA roadster show. I am sure I will also have prints made. Here is a link for those who didn't see the videos Hot Rod Drawings

Question for those of you that sell your artwork and photography prints at car shows. I've been thinking about selling my abandoned cars photography at local car shows, but haven't been sure it would be worth the time/money. I'm not looking to make a fortune, I just don't want to lose money on the deal! Any of you have success at it?

Well my wife was sitting here with me looking at your photos that you've posted and she thought they were great. Very extraordinary and interesting for such simple and basic stuff. Classic shots. She has an eye, huh? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif

Nope, I gave up on trying to sell prints to car guys. Most of em' are cheap fuckers and poor just like me. It's too much of a hassle when somebody wants a print and they try to haggle you down. Try hitting the street rod crowd. Seems like many of them always have excess money.

Yeah, that's what I thought. I'm wondering if I put all of these into a book, if I would do any better profit wise. Hmmm...

Your photos, as art, are amazing. It is clear that some work went into the final images. I assume some of the color and toning work is digital? The problem for me, with these particular images, is that they depress the hell out of me. Seeing that Bonneville convertible rotting away is just a total bummer!

I would suggest shooting some cool traditional rods and customs using your toning style to give them a "real life street" look. I could hang those on my walls without crying :- )

Huh, where is that Bonnie, anyway?

great stuff all around on this edition. Janne, Big Nick, MetalHotRodGirl, FutureElements, LOWCAB and kickass stitches from Pontiacres. I know O/T vehicle but it is auto art. Marker and colored pencil on illustration board.

Buick59, fantastic pics as usual. I dig the perfect focus/exposure on the cars while moving so quickly, in contrast to the background flying by. They look outstanding.

BigNick1959, lotsa nice stripes. They add interest and style to the roomy engine bay. Inline sixes are kool, but I think they can make an engine bay look "empty", especially with a single carb.

The better the art is, the harder it is to sell - like many things, not just art. If it is really good art, it by nature is going to be exceptional and therefore only appeal to the few people who can appreciate it before others. To have the most appeal and therefore likely the most sales, you need to hit the middle sweet spot which sadly it pretty "low" in todays world. Art of any sort is a hard sell, but unless it is by nature pretty average and pretty mediocre, it is even harder to sell. The trick is to try to make the best art you can, but still try to appeal to as many people as possible. Photographs are also particularly hard to sell because everyone knows how to take a snapshot and a lot of dumbasses just think to themselves that they can just take a shot that good and save themselves the $100, $20 or even $5 - whatever. They don't actually realize they aren't capable of taking a shot that good to save their lives nor could they really do it for as cheap as they could probably get it from you if they actually took the time to account for time, gas, travel, materials, just being in the right spot, all the other photos that it took to get the few good ones, etc. I don't want to discourage you and I hope you do give it a chance. Just be realistic and have fun with it and enjoy whatever sales you can get as if they were all just a bonus. I don't consider myself an artist per say, but I did run an art gallery for a couple of years and in the end, no matter what, it was a money losing adventure and a lot of work for both the gallery and the artists. But, there are other rewards for being involved in art that still make it worth while like meeting new people, doing something interesting and creative and enjoying life if nothing else. The world can always use more art, no question, but really just needs a lot more people who appreciate art to begin with. Good luck and have fun!

You might try the post card assortment angle. I've seen this kind of thing at Banes & Noble and Boarders, work by local artist in cellophane packets. don't know if they sell any but there are a bunch of website outfits that will do post cards pretty cheaply.
