    Is the boattail (Cord?) real?

    Cord, I don't think so. Auburn, maybe. But considering the hardtop, which is obviously modern, the car probably is too.

    mearles drive in, visalia cal. built in 1940 and sitting vacant, owner would like to see it leveled but its protected by the city.

    The first picture below is a replica of an Auburn Speedster. Hundreds, maybe thousands, of these have been built and sold over the last 30 years or so, and I think this is what you saw.

    The second picture is a Cord of about the same vintage (1936). Although these have also been replicated, I don't believe there was ever a boat-tail version of this car -- either originally, from Cord, or in any of the replica offerings.

    These pictures illustrate why I thought that the car you saw was more likely an Auburn than a Cord. Additionally, because of the removable hardtop (which was never offered on the original cars), I thought that it was most likely a modern replica.
