History Drag cars in motion.......picture thread.

Thanks for the effort. I forever wondered what the car looked like in color. BTW, it appears that for many of the more powerful cars, be it rail, alterd, or gasser, that smokey runs were still common, even as the early 70's approached . Was this attributed to tires, clutch, track surface?

 

I had the oppurtunity to witness four of his first cars; the Dodge coupe, the roadster, the 67 Dart and the 68 Charger: All at Irwindale. Never got to see his 33 Willys though. After 1969, Vander Woude never returned much to the west coast. He seemed to focus on mostly on the match race circuit, with occasional attendance at AHRA events. Have you ever written a feature about his background? I would be intrigued to know more about him.

i think most of these are paradise mesa, a couple might be from michigan area track programs since that's were dad lived during that time frame

Just a few tonight as I have not had time to scan anymore images. Phil is correct regarding the wheels on the Bootlegger altered. In fact Ian Splatt built the car as well. Ian also built and drove Vic Muirhead's Bounty Hunter A/A (later A/FA) and I crewed on the car during 1972 and 73. That car was in the background of a shot in one of my recent posts and I have some more shots of that car in my collection and will post them later. The Martin/Miles/Wileman Shaker altered in the photo below was another Dragaway built car that started life as a Monaro funnycar. Pictures of the car in that guise also coming up later.

Hot Rod Matt re the Volkswagen powered drag bike photo of Stan Pobjoy, I think you will find that that shot is one of Joe Cook from Victoria.

Hey Rooman do you have any photos of that 318 Chrysler powered unicycle that was out of South Australia in the late '60's? It was a real cool piece, I would like to see them if you do.

 

Sorry for the slight diversion here guys but this is what Bob is asking about. I built it in the early 70's as a joke based on a cartoon that Eddie Ford had done for Australian Hot Rod magazine in the early 60's. I built it out of leftover parts from various other projects and simply entered in the annual hot rod show along with a couple of motorcycles that I had at the time.
The next thing I knew I was on the front page of the morning newspaper and it was a star attraction at the show. It was also featured in Australian Hot Rodding Review magazine. It was fun standing by the display and listening to the smart arse experts telling their mates how it worked. The injector manifold was simply a couple of strips of flat stock with some spigots welded on and the stacks attached. No butterflies, and the fuel lines were actually brake hoses. Likewise the headers had no holes in the flanges for the pipes . The headlight and post were borrowed from a mate's unfinished street rod and the wheel came from my brother's ute. The stablilizing legs are an old Ford wishbone with castors added. An old f/glass bucket seat that my mate stiched up with some new vinyl and a pair of bicycle handlebars, a cut down banjo rear with a front spindle welded to it to attach the wheel and it was done.

Thanks - That was my 8mm film; I had transfered to DVD, then had it posted here on the HAMB about a year ago!! I see that it has also been linked to Byron's Gasser Madness. I'm glad to contribute to our history.
