  1. That car (or one of their's) was just sold on Barrett Jackson last year. It sold for some ridiculously low price and the sued Barrett Jackson for a "quick hammer" .. I think B/J won the suit but not sure.

Bob, A number of years ago Frank sold his home in Englishtown and moved south, either the Carolinas or Florida, forget which. I guess the statute of limitations has run out, so I can tell this story as told to me by Frank.
He was riding by the dealer he'd ordered his '62 409 from and saw a new one in the parking lot. He went back that night and stole the intake and 2x4 set-up from the car. The next day the dealer called him to tell him his car was in, but there was a problem.....someone had stolen the intake and carbs from it, so they were putting on another set from another car and he could pick it up that afternoon. True story!:D

I agree! It worked great at the old S/S-F/X meets and in the NASCAR Ultra Stocks.

Thanks for posting the pictures ... I'll keep my eyes open for any history on the car.

  5. That's funny! He was lucky that Tony Yuppa didn't come by his house and steal both 2x4 set-ups. Tony was a 409 guy from Passaic NJ, he is now deceased. He,up until his passing, owned one of Grumpy's '62s amoung others.

    Bob,
Very interesting story about Tony. If you're referring to Dave Stricklers '62s, there were only 2 of them; a Belair and an Impala SS. Do you know which one he owned?

Here's an email I recieved ... Nick said to go ahead and post it. He ran the Bev Smith Rambler I posted awhile ago ... Great stuff and glad to hear from him. This thread is working just fine, if I do say so myself. Good stuff from everyone. Thanks. Joel

Saw my ‘67 Rambler (Bev Smith Rambler – West Palm Beach, FL). One of my favorite cars – held strip records everywhere we ran including State Championship in 1967 (I think at Orlando Dragway). Started out in ’67 running NHRA C Stock then new rules put it into D stock.<o =""></o>
    <o =""></o>
Car was factory painted in Ford Poppy Red ( a 65 Mustang color). Back then you could do things like that. Then the car was lettered up and painted as “Performance Rambler.”
    <o =""></o>
Because this car was so unusual and no one expected a Rambler to run so good, we actually received great attention in the pits. At one regional event at Miami Hollywood Dragway, there were more fans in our pits than Garlits’ “Swamp Rat.”<o =""></o>
    <o =""></o>
Only downside to racing this car was the competition couldn’t handle getting beat by a Rambler. Slowly, the class went from 15 or so cars down to only 3 or 4 after six months. The car was only beaten in class once and that was because the driver (me) missed a shift. We won Stock eliminator several times. Turned out that AMC learned about our car and to a large extent patterned the 1969 SC/Rambler after it.<o =""></o>
    <o =""></o>
    In the earlier 60’s we ran a series of Fords: a ’62 406 Galaxie (B/S), a 63 ½ Lightweight Galaxie in Super Stock, ’64 Galaxie 390 P-code in D stock and a ’65 Fairlane K-code 289/271 in D-stock.<o =""></o>
    <o =""></o>
Many of the old dragstrips are gone now, probably replaced by condos. Some of them were Amelia Airhart field in Miami, Ft. Myers (anold airstrip), Valkaria (another old airstrip North of Vero Beach), Palm Beach Raceway (now Moroso) and lots more I can’t remember.<o =""></o>
    <o =""></o>
If anyone has photos or info about any of these cars, I’d love to know.<o =""></o>

Bob37,you know a lot more guys that me that's for sure.I did a fair amount of street racing for bucks in the late 60's,Route 21 in Newark and Clifton. And a greasy spoon in Patterson, Grady's?, a lot of black racers there. And the Parkway extension, called it the "Dime Strip" cause you had tp pay a 10 cent toll. Then it dried up,probably not a bad thing actually.

    Rest in Peace Paul......

  13. I'm pretty sure it was the Impala.I never did see it. He told me that the rear end was moved up 1" or so and the front wheels were slightly staggered front to back to allow more roll-out for early leaves on shallow staging. Tony ran a '62 Honduras maroon Impala back-in-the-day.It had a white(stolen) hood with a scoop.

  14. Ah yes, the "Ten-cents Drags" or "Dime Strip" was a favorite back then. I never ran out of Grady's, but a lot of the guys did. I ran mostly out of Rutt's Hutt, down on Rt.21. Four marked-off quarter miles, including the "Rainy-Day Quarter" by the Dreamboat Lounge in Newark. One of the black racers from Paterson I got to know was "Big Red", with his red '62 Galaxy 406. Never knew his given name though, but the 406s were our bond. I used to drive down to scary places in Paterson at 2-3AM to visit him. He would make the cars around him move so that I could park next to him.

    Bob,
Do you recall seeing a '62 like this one at any of those old haunts back then?

  16. It looks very familar. A friend of mine had an identical Nassau Blue '62 SS 327. His was a three-speed column shift, 300hp.

  17. Been lurking , since the thread started,

just had to add my 2 cents about the "Rainy Day Drags" on 21,I almost piled up my GTO under there is was like racing on ice.

  18. Hey Ron,
Remind me to ask Warren about that guy he knows that has all the pictures of Island and E-Town. He has thousands of pictures; maybe some good old S/S shots.

Bob37 and Wguy, what the dates when you were running at Rutt's and the Dreamboat? I think you guys are a little older than me,I was racing there in 69-70,I was running a green 69 Dodge Super B,they called it the green Coronet cause all the graphic shit was deleted. There was a 63? Ford around the Dreamboat, kinda dirty,we called it the Farmer.I messed around with him on Route 21,roll on at 60 mph in highgear,he just walked away from my Mopar!I couldn't believe it cause no Ford ever pulled on me:D.I remember one late night ,an Italian guy in a GTO wanted to race me,about 25 bucks. He had street tires, open pipes, I always ran slicks, closed pipes.I beat him bad,he wanted to race again,so I figured he was setting me up.Blew him off again, then one more time.He paid up like an honest guy, said,"It ain'ta fair, you can no beata me,I got the bigga eng".It was hopping down there, but then a 66 Chevelle lost it,flipped over ,3 guys I believe were ejected. The cops got nasty after that.
Grady's crowd was scarey at times, too many guys wanted to hold the money, too many questions, too much driving around before the race.
Wguy, that 62 looks familar, those tail pipe extensions, did you race in the Clifton area? Did you blow off my 64 Impala 300-327 around 1966?............Tony

    Hi Tony,
I didn't run that car back then. (I was only 12) It was owned by a guy named Pete from West Orange. (I own the car now). The first things he did were paint the wheels shinny blue and add baby moons, cut out the tailpipe resonators and add the chrome extensions. Painted the lettering on the tires gold. He mounted the factory tach up on the dash and added a 4 gauge cluster under the dash. He also put cut-outs on the lead pipes. Pete is gone now but I have a tape recording with his high school buddy telling about the usual places they went on Friday nights to look for action. He always ran the car from a roll and never changed out the factory shifter. And he had this decal on the quarter window. :)

BY the way Bob37, you have a PM.

Here is a video of the Fermier Brothers car in resurrection with Jim Amos. I posted this in the Galaxie thread, but I think it fits here well too. Rich LaMont and Jay Zolko 422 Motorsports did the engine and are helping with the resor. Sounds really bad ass! FE Bob is at the wheel after 38 years, this is the first time the car has moved under its own power since the resto began.

Bob has been a bit under the weather lately but will be back at it soon. Bob and Jim found Bobby Fermier's old car still sitting in a shop yard in FL and have been getting it ready for the N/SS wars. Thanks for posting the clip.

Thanks Verne. that scan is not the best ... the shot is much sharper. At that same Island meet was Jere Stahl and his '66 Street Hemi which did a job on Jenkins' Nova that day. I'll post a shot of it from that day soon.
