Hemi 6 x 2, Cross-Ram - Edelbrock X3 - Finally found one! . . . Information Needed?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bored&Stroked, Apr 28, 2008.

  1. I've always wanted an Edelbrock X3 Cross-Ram manifold for an early Hemi. Over the last 5 years, I've only seen a couple for sale - and at extremely high prices. Finally found one for a fair price - in such good shape that it could not have been used much. (Really didn't need to spend the money on this at the moment - with a build that is already ****ing at my bank account  - but you all know the sickness, could not p*** it up!) I believe it came from a Hydro boat setup - but not sure.

Does anybody have any information about this manifold? When did Edelbrock produce it - what was it typically ran on, etc.. It sure seems like it would be a better setup than the usual log-style manifolds that I typically see. With the long runners, one would think it could at least develop some torque. I don't know anybody who has ever ran one . . . maybe somebody on the HAMB knows something?

This manifold has such a nice design - can just see it polished with six 97's on top and some cool stacks of some sort.

Dale..... they were made as an experiment... very limited numbers...cars and boats...
And I think only for hemi chryslers(early)392 I believe and some were made for sbc's....
I too want one for my 392..... but always outta my price range.
I believe there is an article in a TRJ about them.....can't remember which issue......

    Great score you lucky dawg.

  8. Thanks! I'd love a bit of history on this manifold and it would sure be cool to know somebody who actually ran an X3 see what they throught of the design and how well they ran. If you happen to remember the TRJ article or if anybody has it - please let me know.

    Appreciate all the posts . . .

Saw one awhile back that had been converted (did not get a close look) to mount a Holley on each side. It looked mighty impressive.

I believe these were produced ca. 1958 by Vic Edelbrock Sr. He also produced three 8x2 crossrams for the early Chrysler hemi and these were indeed intended for marine use. A friend of mine had one of the 8x2s in his early hemi collection a couple of years ago - don't know if he still has it though.

Scooter - you had better add me to your Hate List - I lusted for one of those for a number of years before I landed one - it wasn't cheap, but it was no where near the stupid money they go for now. Keep looking - you'll find one - I don't think they're as rare as some would have you believe. Seems like every time I turn around I see one on Ebay.

BTW - would you hate me more if I told you mine was polished and I think possibly NOS????? ;-)

  14. Cool input from all of you . . . maybe we'll find somebody who has ran one of them.

Just to let the cat out of the bag, I paid $750 for it -- which included shipping and insurance. It wasn't cheap, but I felt it was a fair price for a manifold in this condition . . . given you don't see lots of them out there. Plus, the real truth is that I just had to have it  -- the X3 is my favorite early Hemi manifold design.

    WHAT!!!!?? :eek::eek: $750!!!!!???

Now I really hate you!!!:eek:

Yes... now I hate you more too!!:eek:

HAHAH!! :D:D Okay, no REAL hating, but some jealousy for sure! Never dreamed you could find one in that good of shape for that kind of money. I would have figured double that.

Ok Scooter - I won't rub it in too bad - but I paid less - but again that was a few years back......

BTW there's a locla guy who runs one on his '36 (I think) Plymouth truck - 354 hemi with 2CG's on it. It runs fine - 14's at the drags with a mild motor and I think he's got freeway gears as well. Anyways he's tickled with it and last time I talked with him he was looking for another one - so I guess that tells you a little something there.

I've yet to run mine (been too busy with other projects) but I always liked the way my old SBC ran with a cross ram - once you get the pump shot right and mix close.

I picked one up last year for my Pontiac. I think I paid paid about $600 or $700 for mine, too....and looks to have never been mounted. That will change once I scrounge me up some carbs and get my old Pontiac on the road again. :)

  24. These look like the Edmunds repops . . . am I correct? I have 3 of the originals . . . will get in touch with Obrien for some "real" filters instead of the original oil-bath setup.

Do you have any clearer or closer pictures of this setup? Would love to contact the owner and see how they've setup the middle versus the outer carbs.

Nice score on the intake. I've got two fours on mine but that intake has me wanting one.

Guy here in town has one he's been asking $1,200 for...you scored at $750! The Chrysler LONG cross manifolds are cool too, but the main issue is clearance with those. What are you putting it on...I'm ***uming no hood, right?
