Can anyone on the HAMB tell the tale of how they got to 200mph on a budget? I know it depends on the cl***, car/engine combination..OK lets say its a 48 Cadillac sedanette with a 520 Caddy engine..what gearing combo would it take? I know on the Caddy engine it would have to be a roller drivetrain etc..anyone gone 200 mph for less than, say, 20K? is that dreamin?...

Not as fast but read the article by Scotty Gosson "Blast across the Salt" in the July Rod and Custom. Interesting stuff.

48 Caddy to 200 mph?Are you talkin a stock sheetmetal car? Try 650 HP and a lotta balls.

  5. The engine alone would probably cost $20,000, maybe more. Would need lots of safety gear, full cage, etc.=more weight and more money.

Hooley got his 200 MPH license and a run with at top speed of 219 MPH at Bonneville for less the 20 grand. The motor had a set of $50 rods and pistons bought at a swap meet. For the whole story go to http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/temp-pictures/hooley-2004.html The following year he built the $20,000 blower motor to get into the 200 MPH club and to set the record in B/BGCC. As you go faster the cost really go up. If you go to http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner/hooley/hooley-construction.html you will get more specs on the car and the construction.

There was a salt proven camaro for sale on landracing.com that would get you there, cheap. Aerodynamics is alot cheaper than horsepower.

$39 fares from Tulsa to Phoenix... does that qualify?

I've been 200 before... but all I know is that the ride sobered me up really fast. It was a buddy's car, and he eventually rolled it before he killed himself. Idiot is in prison now, but he's still alive.

    Not to burst your bubble....
A full roll cage would easily be 3k in materials, speed rated tires are another 4-5k, a built engine is a huge amount ( a friends v4f engine cost easily over 12k, and that is for a four cyl flathead), and you also have to figure in support vehicles, and extra engines and ******s....

Ive ran over it numerous times myself, I think once my hot rod is done its getting sold to finance a race car... It ****s but such is life...

easiest way to hit 200 is to pull the rev limiter off a new hayabusa. cost ya far less than 20g and you can sell the bike after you get your runs in

  12. I didn't read the whole article, was this his first really fast car? Lots of know-how and buddies who know what they are doing would cut the cost.

"Cheap" depends on your definition and some have done it, but probably not safely.

Cage, fire suit, harness, helmet, gloves, shoes, etc. Add all that up and add the cost of the car and you're out of most peoples definition of cheap.

I'll be close to 200 MPH on May 7th,8th and 9th of this year. :D
My honey bought a 3 day Pro Comp license cl*** for me at Doug Foley Drag Racing School. So $1800 gets you to around 185MPH

I got it for my 60th birthday.......I know, close but no cigar !! :p

how's about we start with a reasonable goal first...like say the speed limit, and work our way up from there.:D

Any one remember the guy who was going to build a rat rod dodge truck with a 318 and go 200 for under $2500, and then got all pissy when EVERYONE burst his bubble. That was funny ****.

I had a long talk with a fellow here at work with an Audi wagon, s4 or some AWD thing. Anyway, he swears it will do 200 with its 270 horses, brick shape and SUV ground clearance. I laughed.

This is alot more reasonable a goal. Just follow the Hooley code!

I love and hate those ****ing things. Stupid fast bikes.

That's reality though, it's probably cheaper to get a bike teched for that speed on the salt than a car.

One of the fastest cars I have ever been in was an Audi AWD A4 with hopped up turbo's. It was like 0-125 in no time with zero wheel spin. I was pressed so low in my seat I could not see anything. But that was because I was embarressed to be driving in a yuppie car I slouched so no one could see me! Hahaha;)

A ZO6 Vette, least expensive of 200 MPH road legal Supercars, will do just a tick under 200 mph stock, remove the mirrors, some tape over some openings and 200 mph is available to anyone with the money on a straight smooth road, not at the al***ude and drag of the Salt Flats.Insane but possible.

Hmmm...my mother's 96 Chevy Police car goes 200 easily just by pushing this magic ****on that says "Metric display" or something like that...maybe Mr Audi has one of those...way cool accessory.
My '48 Ford can't go 200, but it can reach numbers that terrify anyone who doesn't know it's metric too...

The words CHEAP and FAST should never be used together when involving a vehicle with full on safety in mind.

My cousin (a GM small block combustion engineer) and I have been thinking we could build a mid-80s GM F-body for under 20K. I only agreed on the Chevy because of cost and his experience with it (hehe).

I actually think most of the cost would be from having to make the trip out there (gas and lodging). Also, unless I'm mistaken, it would take three years to get licensed to officially go oveer 200 mph. Am I incorrect about this, or could I get all three licenses in the same week?

Regardless... I feel confident a car could be built for less than 20K. Maybe Jesse James could blow some of his "disposable" income to prove it could be done

Yes.. That's a challenge by the way :D

  29. The problem with 200 miles an hour is where are you going to find 10 miles of straight road with no intersections?

Well, and how are you going to stop when you get to 200?

The rest is a motor with RPM capacity enough to go that fast, horsepower enough to overcome aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance, and a final gear ratio suited to the max RPM you can get out of the motor.

My Chevy Suburban with a .70 OD and 2.73 rear aught to be able to go 150 MPH, but probably not with the stock 350 powering it, unless I drive off a cliff.

Seriously, I think the biggest cost is in the safety requirements. They will be a big deal, because any car that can go 200 with relatively simple, cheap tech is going to happen to fit into a cl*** where the cars with expensive tech are going 300...and the requirements are going to be based on that.
Could a used NASCAR ch***is be a cheap way?? They run 200 with 700 HP, very expensive HP because of rules. A 700 hp big block would be cheaper and would go right in...just a thought.
