How cheaply(and safely) has anyone gone 200mph.?

This would be my chosen method of reaching 200mph but I've not the million and a half dollars to do it. The kicker is that this car will blast past 200mph over and over and over and over and over again over it's serviceable life needing nothing more than a tank full of gas and some fresh tires. The engineering in this thing is just fantastic. I've only ever been 145mph in a wheeled vehicle but it isn't one of those things that I strive for.

I frequent the shop of the Burkdolls in northern Utah. They only recently gave up their attempts at speed with their streamliners after a pretty brutal crash but they've all been over 200mph...but they do build a mean street rod I tell ya!

NASCAR. Except it's not legal for any cl***. As a time only ride it would be fine. If you did it once to say you did it, and then sold the car it would have to be pretty cheap. Not to high on the acomplishment scale though.

  3. Sled has it right . Get a '53 studebaker body , they've been going 200+ mph for decades . Prolly a few old Bonne Bakers around for sale , already set up for speed .

a few years ago several magazines weretouting the affordability of 200mph.
their formula was simple. 80s model camaro,bbc,6speed ******,minimum safety as required by sactioning body, haul ***.
they offered several examples and claimed this to be true? i would like to believe it.
if those numbers are anywhere close to true thats probably as lost cost as it will ever be again.
to make it hamb friendly spend a little more on the starter car and use a 53 stude.

I got to run 124 mph on radar. That was legal speeding...In a 85 Dodge patrol car going to a major accident. Guy was killed crossing I 20 in the dark. Car cost about $15 K back then fully out fitted..

Fox,Lancaster,WZ,docauto, you guys get it and do it..Thanks..course Lux is right, first we have to get the engine IN the car and down to the first intersection and stopped..Maybe we ought to just put the Caddy engine in my 53 Studebaker!? its just that the Caddy is so cl***y lookin and streamlined too and really doesn't weigh that much...I've always heard that getting to 150 in most powerful cars isn't that hard, but the next 50 costs cubic dollars...

You are fighting frontal area not weight at Bonneville. Getting the Cad over two is going to cost a fortune

If You really want to do this, I have access to a car that can get it done...but the course will be a hall of alot shorter. The car in question went 219...in the 1/8th. Outlaw Pro Mod.

    It'll make Your Turkey Perky.

  10. 2nd or 3rd gen camaro with aero mods, a bad*** BBC, and the required safety gear would be the cheapest I think.

  11. 3rd Gen Firebird is more aerodynamic. But now we are getting off topic.

Autozone "aluminum" and "carbon fiber" wing drywall screwed to the trunk of any car less than 2800 lbs will go at lease 180!

I love the idea of an old nascar setup... good thought guys. Seems like the right amount of work for someone who has time to redo some tired suspension components, update the safety and build a screaming mill. I know I would be hard pressed to be able to pull off an aero job anywhere near what the roundy-round guys have been doing for years.

What's the rollcage tubing requirement for Bonneville? The NASCAR guys are typically using 1 3/4 x .095 so if you need .120 wall or heavier the car won't tech.

I only ask because I saw .120 mentioned earlier in this thread and am ***uming that this 200mph deal will take place somewhere like that or Maxton and need to be tech'd.

Hi Al, best thing to do is order a SCTA rulebook. I recall the minimum cage tube size for cars over 175 is 1.75 x 0.120 wall. I'd HIGHLY recommend DOM.

it's a fun but totally consuming hobby. Here's my latest folly: www.worldlandspeedrecord.com

Double check the roll cage specs,on tube diameters
and wall thickness, before spending your money.

Even if the ch***is is legal, the body
doesn't fit into any of the SCTA cl***es.
So you would end up running for Time Only.

The 30 sedan we run at bonneville had a motor similar to what your describing, 514ci caddy ,stock except for cam ,bigger valves, stiffer valve springs and some pocket porting. The little orange 'brick' went 163.7mph in the mile. This year we are going with caddy 540ci blown alchohol and we may see another 20-25mph if we're lucky. The new motor cost more than the rest of the car:eek:

its like talking to a brick wall.... bonneville will weed out the faint of heart. all this talk of "just using this or that" is funny though :)

rixex - i believe you are on the right track, the stude body with a big motor will produce results. if anything, get it together and pop your cherry on the salt and have some fun but build with the intention of going +/= 200mph in your cl***. i cant say if there is a cheap way to do it... do whatever you can yourself and farm out the stuff you are unsure of.

I think it cost me a little over $300 for a roundtrip ticket to San Diego and back a few years ago. On the way back we had a nice tailwind and a small load so the pilots opened er up a little bit. I think we were doing close to 550mph or something like that. That's bang for the buck.

Great movie! I was late to the party, but finally watched my copy yesterday.
Good thing nobody was around to hear me yelling at the screen, "SPEED WOBBLE! RIDE THROUGH IT, BURT!".

I plan on making it to the 200 mph club in the next 10 yrs.
I'm a driver looking for a car in the meantime. PM me if you're a team in need of a pilot.

To continue with the nascar idea..... If I'm not mistaken, Didnt the late 60s early 70s mopar winged cars do 212 mph in the NASCAR circuit? If true forget buyng a late model high tech nascar ch***is, just get a old charger for a few grand, build an aluminum nose and wing, a small block chevy good for the power can be built cheap (might only last a few p***es, but its a few p***es), and there you go. Again its the safty.

BTW- who needs a Hyabusa when you could have a Vincent black shadow?

Lets think about this. What was the al***ude where the super birds were running? What is the al***ude at Bonneville? What was the surface and what was the coeficent of friction at Taladegra? What is it at Bonneville? Did every Super Bird go 200 or just a few racing models? Do you think they may have been tweeked way past anything driving around town? Have you seen what they go for at actution? There is a Daytona Charger running mid 230s at Bonneville. I bet it's worth more then my house. One thing about Bonneville is that you can always find someone who hasn't done it to explane how easy it is.

The amount of torn up exotics out there is proof that most of these guys that have them are just a bunch of dueches with too much money.

As far as frontal area (I get it) my inspirations have always been the big Buicks, Packards,Nashes and Hudsons..the ones with blown straight eights..How fast are they going these days? Has there ever been a 63-64 Riviera out there? does that reverse cut back frontend cause too much lift?

The only Buick eight I know of is abiut '52 major barge with a 6:71 blown straight eight. He runs around 136 mph. Have not seen any Riv's. There is about a 51 Hudson that runs about as fast with out the blower. My blown 270 GMC powered Vega went 177 mph 28 years ago on gas.
