Just a reminder: The B-17, B-24, B-25, etc., will be going from Arizona through California and into the northwest on their annual tour.
You have to see these planes up close, and check 'em out. If you have some extra bucks, go for a ride. (Best $ I ever spent).
If ever there were hot rods in the skies, these are them!
I'm going to Burbank on saturday the 10th if anyone wants to meet up.

    WOW! That looks amazing!

  3. B17 flew over my house last night...I'm right in the flight path for runway J at LB airport. One of the only perqs is the old birds coming into town every year.

There was a B17 in town just a few weeks ago and they were taking people out for rides and usually they take off heading west, but the wind waws kicking up and they reversed, so they were taking off right over the house. Totally different and super cool sounding with those 4 Wright Cyclones cranking at full throttle!

There is actually one parked at John Wayne I think. I wonder if that would be the same one. I see it off and on. BEAUTIFUL! You can tell what it is before you ever see it! Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck every time!

If you've never experienced a B-17 or B-24 Liberator up close, you will be blown away. The sound of 4 radial engines droning at full throttle over your head will send chills up your spine, if you have a pulse.

(The cost to run these bird are prohibitively expensive in terms of fuel and oil consumed per hour, so this could be your only chance to see them for a while!)

The John Wayne 17 is Fuddy Duddy, formerly from the National Warplane Museum. It's now owned by collector William Lyon. The one in town a few weeks ago is from Georgia, the Liberty Belle, restored by Tom Reilly for one of the guys that was involved in getting the P38 out of the Glacier.

OH! WOW! Thanks for the info! I've never got a clear shot at the nose art or markings and it always seems like the sun is in just the right place when it's flying over to blind me! Very cool!

Man I love this old aviation stuff!! I've never been to an airshow with anything this old for some reason. Not sure if I'll make it to this event, but dammit, one of these days I need to get some time with some real old tin. I still really want to do the fighter trainer experience where you get to go up and fly around and take the stick for a bit. So little time and money...

I try to go see them every year, my father was a B-17 mechanic for the Army Air Corp. so I heard all the stories. The big radials definately have a distinct sound. I urge all Hambers , if you have the chance, go see these planes, they are awesome!!!!

Looked at the website, do you have to have an appt. to ride in one? They will be in Burbank on my birthday, sounds like just the thing I should ask for.

  19. best i have seen around here is the flight school in columbus , they buzz my cotton field from time to time .. the blue angels come to town once a year but i have not seen any vintage war era machines here yet ..

I signed up the day before my ride. I went up in the B-17.
Very humbling to say the least. You seatbelt yourself to the floor for about a minute or so after takeoff and then you are free to roam around. I sat for about 10 minutes in the front gunners canopy...unreal, just unreal.

I did it last year, and it was the best $400.00 I ever spent.
All I could think of though, was how it must have sounded
to hear a couple of hundred of them overhead, and that
the Capt. was in his early twenties, and the crew in their
teens. God bless those guys, we owe them a lot.

I went last year to Brackett Field and saw them, they'll be there May 6th-8th and then on to Burbank after that. It is well worth your time to go see these planes and to watch them take off and land. The roar of the engines is something.

A few years back I got to go in the B-17G at Falcon Field, AZ it's run by the Confederate Air Force, it's an amazing experience!!!

Some of the bravest young men this country ever had, from the greatest generation, flew these planes. Most pilots Capt. rank were only 21-23 yrs old while the crew was 17-19 yrs old. They had to fly 100 missions, bombing runs over Germany before being reassigned.

They just flew over the house going from La Verve to Burbank where they will be over the weekend.
Man, nothing can get you running out of a house quicker than the sound of these bombers rumbling over head.
...still have goosebumps, and they flew over 10 minutes ago...I'll be there saturday!
