Here's a shot of Dyno Don's fenderwell headers in '61. Nicholson was close friends with Jerry Jardine and did alot for the promotion of Jardine Headers throughout the country.

I'd agree on that possible blanket date thereabout for the 2x4 setup and other options for the various brands.

Thanks Verne. This thread has been great, more than I'd hoped for. Private snapshots really get at the weekly history. I love it all.

All the brands ran OS/S I believe. I'll post some bits on the class soon. I doubt I have any NHRA-AHRA bulletin type bits though.

Anyone interested in photos of what remains of Flemington Dragway taken 1999 I have a couple. Property belongs to the county now.

Sure Charlie ... I haven't been to the place since 1962! I'd heard it is still there.

  5. Speaking of old drag strips, the next nice weekend, either this coming or the next, I'm getting a chance to pull my '59 Ford B/MP onto the original Connecticut Dragway for some snap shots. It should be pretty neat! I'll keep you posted.

No, it is a tribute car built by one of the original Brainbeau team members Sam Murray.
Nice pic of the original 67 at the SS Nationals by the way!!!

  10. Joel and everybody else, here are some of the family pics i said i would post. my little brother Tommy Walker died tuesday 4-29 so i was searching pics anyway. these were given to me by my dad Bob Walker before he passed away. he was one of the mechanics and drivers on the "Bounty Hunters" team from Bob Banning Dodge in Hyattsville Md. Sorry i cant tell much about the pics except my stepmom (in the 63) worked at the dealer as well and drove (not raced) the new super stockers also. the 64 pic looks like maybe George Weiler vs my dad and i photo shopped a coffe cup ring off the original pic years ago. I was born in 58 so i recall all the cars we had starting with my favorite one. we had a 63 plymouth also. i wish i had a pic of that one. spent alot of time in that car. we used to go to capitol when it was closed and blast down the track. i would stand up behind the pass seat and hold on.age 5, 11second passes, no helmet or seat belts. no wonder i blasted my 63 down 75-80 on oct 30 2005 with my 6 year old on board. i have the LAST 409 impala to go down that track. EVER. anyway, enjoy.

  14. thanx Jody, my dad and I were there as well on the first day in 1960 he raced a 55 chevy before the mopars. I've had my 409 car since 76. he was'nt too fond of the W's. he worked at the chevy dealer and changed so many head gaskets, he started putting 2 sets on that were painted together. it worked and when the zone rep got wind of it, my dad wound up with a nice bonus check from GM and the factory began to use 2 gaskets on the high compression motors. i posted this info once on another site and got flamed for it. just going on what he and my mother said. she just remembers the check. btw: on the W's with 3 2 barrels there is some sort of vacuum contraption for the throttle linkage? i dont really know, but he came up with that as well. said he used a coffee can for a resevoir. then he spent many years at the US Park Police garage and helped pioneer the use of propane on police cars. when i worked for Malcolm Durham in hyattsville, he drove over in one.

Bob, sorry to hear about your brother. My condolences. Thanks for the good shots. Both of the vintage shots look like Cecil C., MD. Interesting information too. No faming on this thread ... just an interest in these cars and the history.

It looks like maybe the '61 Old Reliable in the background of the '63 car shot? Can you read any of the lettering on the car?

Thanks. That staging lane shot is one of my favorites, there's all kinds of cars waiting for a run.

I'm trying to remember the 442 that "Doc" Burgess bought after he sold us the Black Arrow. He called the Olds Black Arrow too, and ran it a season or two before he quit racing. I do remember the car was the national record holder in its class when he bought it.

  20. ...wow you owned the Black Arrow? Anyone know where the car is now? I know it was altered later...maybe being restored back to it's early configuration?...

I told the story somewhere on this site before, but it got sent to Consolodated Metal Works in Newburgh New York about 1972 or so, crushed into a little rectangle of steel, and sent to japan. It was a butchered up hulk (for that day) although I'm sure someone would think it worthy of restoration in these times. I sold it to a kid in Cornwall N.Y.whose Mom got tired of him working on it in the backyard and she made him get rid of it. If you've been around East Haddam most of your life, we ran the car at Connecticutt Dragway in '68 in the heads up super stock series, really the forerunner to pro stock. 3200#'s, 428 cube max, stock wheelbase. That was racin'! Great cars ran that series, Tasca Ford, Larsen Ford (Billy Kolb), Bill Flynn, Norwood Chevy and Kosty Ivanof, even Grumpy showed up (once) to get whipped by the Hemis. The best thing about the whole season was Jon Lundberg doing the announcing. To me, no one ever came close to Jon as the most awsome announcer ever.

  22. Wow thats interesting, sad to hear the fate of the Black Arrow though. A friend of mine Hal Ferrington recalls running against the car in a (I think) '66 or '67 GTO. They gave him a half track head start and the Black Arrow still ran him down at the line.

Hello everyone, just want to say thankyou for all the stories and historys of these cars. I do have a question on Tom Sturms 61 Impala. My son and I have recently bought a 61 Impala that he owned(we think). They way we know is that we have some paperwork from the late 80's with his name for electrical work on the am radio. We also know that the Calif plate number was Mr. 409 and that two prior owners have said it had a 409 when he had it. Now it's a small 400 cu in with a T-10 4-speed. One question is was the car ever lettered? Does anyone have any better pictures of the car other than what WGuy posted. 3-17-08 around 3-4 pm. Maybe he wanted to have a clone of what he had in 61, don't know. With the exception of what looks like chrome reverse wheels the car looks the same today as the picture below

While we're on the subject of 409s, here's a memorable shot of a pair of '61s. Later in the season, some '61s were running the Optional Super/Stock class with over-the-counter big heads and the 2x4 set-up. Seeing these cars run well into the 12s put Chevy solidly at the top of the other competition in the second half of '61.
The Strum car appears to be for sale at this time. I believe the fate of that car is unknown.

This pic was sent to me by a friend in our Olds club, indeed it was the former 67 Brainbeau car. I hope the story you told was the Black Arrow MoPar and not the 442 that was crushed. Either way, it's obscene.

We are planning on throwing a bunch of stuff into a trailer and hitting the road to build custom headers. We're centeraly located in the middle of no where. So we figured we'll come to you. I'm working on big and small block tri 5 fender wells. I'll post some pictures. These will be production headers.
    Thanks,
    Jerod Jardine.

Tom Jacobson, Rolling Hills Ca. could perhaps shed some light on this.

My pops is pretty sure he sold that car. I saw some old catalogs the other day. I'll try and find 'em. They had a few good shots of that car.
