Whats the basics for putting a 26-27 body on a Model A frame? Ive always wondered this.

Ive always wanted to see a T mounted on Model A fenders/chassis, not sure how close body dimensions are for that to work, but ive been thinking about this alot lately.

do to the impending model chang the A frame was designed to fit the 27 body just in case the A bodys wernt ready and ford could just keep making the T bodys

    Man !!

This thread has so far Produced some Very Cool Roadsters.

To look at whats been posted makes me wonder WHY the Hell anyone would even consider a Rectangle Tube Frame in any Early car.

Well, for starters, how about strength, ability to change wheelbase without without putting sections in the frame, no need to box and subject the frame to all of the additional heat, unstressed material (model A frames are high carbon and subject to cracking, using consistant material throughout instead of putting new matrerial up against old when stepping the frame, custom width to accomodate suspension changes,...............................can I stop now or continue with about a dozen other reasons.:)

    WOW !!

Thanks for opening my eyes on that ....Sheeeesh What was i
    thinking ?

I guess Rectangle frames also LOOK much COOLER, You can easily "Z" the front 8" & rear12" with ease, Mount Air Bags Swiftly, attach Vega or Mustng II stuff in a flash !!

Man, Look at All the cars in this thread and see how cool the over all look is how TRADITIONAL it is....

Sorry to hijack a bit... Thats all Folks:cool: I just hate the look of box tube frames & was pointing out how cool these cars look.

I'd heard this too, but I've just fitted a '26 touring body to my A chassis and this certainly wasn't the case. The holes in the rear subframe towards the end of the rear crossmember are 'close', but nothing else is. At the front, I had to fabricate a couple of 'in-riggers' to mount the body using its original bracketry, though this only took an hour or so and was nothing complicated.
I like the tale of the T bodies being able to mount to the A chassis' in case the A's weren't ready - it sounds very Henry - but I can only think it's a bit of an urban myth, certainly from my experience anyway.
Having said all this, if you have the capability to do some basic fab work - and I mean very basic - and can use a welder, then you won't have any problems in doing such a swap.

so I am about to do this with a 27 roadster do you throw the roadster body sub chassis away and mount all the panels direct to the A frame or just stick the whole thing on top of the A frame?

Jack, lift up the T body and just drop it on the A frame. Then have a good look at what you need to do to secure it. Assuming that you don't want to channel it, that is.
The T subframe is integral to the body, and these things are wobbly enough already. Cut as little out as you can get away with.

Do you have any pics showing what you had to make/modify?

Wow...I needed to modify my pedals to get them anywhere near where they were usable. The clutch pedal was fouling the toe-board panel on the inside of the cowl, and I can't imagine the roadster and touring cowls are different. The steering wasn't great either, the relief in the dash needed modifying to allow the column to pass through it.

I have pics at home of a cream 27 touring body on an A frame with fenders. Has a Columbia axle too I think. The fenders are black I believe. I think I foundthe pictures here on the HAMB. Very cool car. I will try to remember to post them tonight.

I only did this swap a matter of a few weeks ago, and I'm sure I've got a pic or two of the pedal situation on my home PC. I'll dig it out later and post it.

No, I hardly ever take pics, which is stupid really, I know.
If you drop a T body on and A chassis, you'll see where the original T mounting points are and how far away the rails are. I just grew a pair of brackets, welded to the chassis, toward the T mounting points. Then used a 14mm bolt through each of them.

Maybe the UK models A and T were different. I'm building a shortened T Touring on an A frame. I expect a bit of fab work.

Maybe, but my A was from Minnesota and the T was found in one of your deserts! I'll get those pics out and you can see what I mean then.
