    Two questions actually...

What Ive got...dual exhaust with two 22" Smithys ending right before my rear axle...the tips are pointed down and out a bit.

The two problems I have is one: the annoying, loud , ear defining tone I get at cruising speed! Ive been told its because the sound is bouncing off the ground causing that sound. Two: the exhaust smell getting inside.

Im wondering if I go ahead and run the exhaust as far back as I can towards the rear bumper (the rear is bagged) and not have the tips pointed towards the ground...will this quiet down the sound a bit and keep the exhaust fumes from finding their way in? Just want to get your thoughts before I spend the money at the exhaust shop....Thanks guys...:)

Run it so that one way or another the exhaust exits out from under the car.

I'd run it clear out the back but with the bags you might be better off to exit it in front of the rear wheels. Still loud but at least you won't risk killing your self with carbon monoxide.
My 71 GMC daily driver has what amounts to straight pipes exiting in front of the rear wheels. Loud but still comfortable in the cab with no sound deadener and it sure echos sweet off the Johnson barriers going down the freeway.

Thanks guys....so running it as close to the rear as I can should eliminate the annoying sound and fumes??
Thanks LabRat for the pic....but mine is bagged in the rear and would pinch the tips.....maybe like what was mentioned, out the fender wells..Just dont like the look of that.....

run the tips just past the bumper, I had the same prob.
my tips where flush with the rear bumper and I got noise and fumes.
I moved the tips back 2" and it cut the noise almost in half and no more fumes.
I am missing the seal around my trunk lid , so that would help too.

If you let the exhaust fumes out right underneath your car it will kill you. Stuff sneaks in all the little holes and cracks, and if enough builds up inside the car you're dead. Thing is once it gets to a certain concentration you can't smell it any more, there's no warning at all when you've had too much.

Make sure the ends of the pipes are clear of the car, either out the sides or out the back. I know of a young couple who died of carbon monoxide poisoning from a pipe cut about 2" too short to get the gases clear of the boot (trunk) area, and a damaged rubber seal was all it took to kill them both.

Oh yeah, and it will also help reduce the echoing of the exhaust note too.

    Cheers, Glen.

I had my exhaust almost exactly like you described for a couple weeks on my old sedan (a 52 Chevy, no less!). It wasn't really so loud, but it was a pitch that was very obnoxious around 30-50 mph.

I had the exhaust run out from under the rear bumper and it totally cured the problem. It also gave it a little more "high performance" sound rather than sounding like a beat-up farm truck.

after putting tail pipes on , you can also run an "x" or "h" pipe between your exhaust pipes in front of your mufflers , will help balance out the system and lower the resonance tone a little
