Well before i left the Jalopy Showdown I checked my hubcaps to make sure none were loose (well i do that before i leave anywhere). We were rolling up rt15 to Dillsburg then make a left to take 74 to head to Carlisle. We stoped at a couple of red lights nothing happens but at the last light we make a left. I hear the classic TINK TINK TINK hubcap goes rolling, hits a late 90's Couger, falls over. I'm swearing up and down at the hubcap for falling off. I stop make a hard right into a parking lot to go back and get it. We make it almost to the end of the parking lot and the Couger heads me off. Nose to nose i stop he stops . He looks like he is goin to kill me.He gets out reaches into the back seat gets my hubcap out comes over. we meet halfway Right now I'm saying "I'm sorry i hope your car is ok." He looks like he wants to fight untill he sees my friend get out of his car behind us then he rubs the car where the cap hit and gets back into his car a speeds off. When did saying I'm sorry, mean i want to fight over a small paint chip? Evol55 (Andy)

I'm not sure what you were expecting. I would have been pissed also. Put yourself in his shoes and someone elses hubcap hit your shiney car. To you, it might just be a paint chip but to me that is a flaw to deal with in my paint. I guess your next thing would be that the paint was shot anyway. You still dinged his car.

well i look at it as the cost of driving your car..no intentional harm was ment..I mean it wasnt like you took your cap off and threw it at his car.
Hub caps come off all the time. yours just happened to hit someones car. You had good intentions of saying sorry. That other dude just needs to put on his big boy panties and get over it. If you drive your cars, your gonna get nicks and scratches on them. If you dont want that to happen build a trailer queen and store it in your garage so no one else can enjoy it..My cars are built to drive and have fun in..screw the dings and scratches...war wounds..its all part of the game..IMO

I had one come off yesterday too, at 55 MPH, but all mine did was kick up some dirt in an empty field and ruin the hubcap but shit happens and snap in hubcaps come off no matter what you do. It isn't like he was throwing it like a Frisbee and deliberately hit the car and I don't care how nice it was no late model T-Bird is worth getting in a fight over. It was an accident, yeah I'd be upset too if it hit my car but that's it. If you drive your car you have to expect things like that to happen. People need to pull their heads out of their asses and lighten up. Don't take life so seriously people, it isn't permanent! Besides it can be turned in on your insurance and if Mr. Badass had stuck around instead of sticking his tail between his legs at the appearance of backup he probably could have got it taken care of through "evol55's" insurance, now he's stuck for it, IF he fixes it, and it serves him right for being such an asshat.

Epoxy those babies. You will still be able to remove them when you need.
As far as driver attitudes... I have been driving now for 39 years and I can tell you that this world is going to hell in a handbasket.

If this was the other way around there'd be 50 HAMBrs screaming for the Cougar driver's head. Flying hubcaps bouncing off your car don't constitute normal road wear IMO. A spinning hubcap is pretty much a sawblade against your paint. That guy had every right to be pissed.

Edit- every right to be pissed is not the same as every right to start a fight. This kinda stuff definitely not worth fighting over. Glad to hear one of you kept a cool head

Not to steal the thread, but- What do you mean by"Epoxy those babies"?

I have the problem with 53 Olds Fiesta caps that won't stay on.

    Thanks for the help.

Sometimes ya gotta look from the other side of the situtaion too... If it was the Cougar that lost the cap and dinged into yer car, How would you have handled it? Yeah, yeah, I know it's different cuz you have an old car but some people couldn't care less what yer driving. It's just another "old car" to them. Either way, ya gotta make sure nothing "falls" off yer car. Bend those ears out on the caps and make em fit really tight. Problem solved.

If its the type the clips over or under a hump..like the steelie type, a small bead of epoxy will keep them on there. If its the type that have the metal tangs that scratch the paint on the inside of the edge, designed to hold by metal pressure than epoxy won't work. Rebending the angle of the tangs sometimes helps.

    Yep,
I wouldn't have been pissed - I would have just had your insurance company pay for it and be done..... unless your thought that my little scratch didn't warrant your insurance company paying for it, then you will have a problem and I think I speak for a lot of people.

Sounds like you have problems with those caps as you check them frequently.

Sorry is fine included with... let me give you my name /number / insurance company name/number and all that info.

That is the right thing to do.

Seems like some people are ready to fight over anything at the drop of a hat.......or a wheel cover. Yeah, if it was my shinny car, I'd be pissed, but being civilized means being able to control your emotions. Your reason for turning around appears to be to retrieve your wheel cover, not to make restitution for the damage you caused - maybe that came through when you were face to face with the 'victim' and pissed him off even more. Approaching a guy whose car you damaged and saying "I'm sorry i hope your car is ok", isn't offering up front to make things right and offer to pay for the damage caused, especially when you knew there was a potential for that cap comming off.

Finally, guys that want to start an altercation over little shit, might want to bear in mind that a lot of people carry and trying to start a fight might well get you killed. I know I'd defend myself any way I could. Just a thought.

I had a really nice set of original caps on the Mustang. One fell off and before I could stop to recover it, three cars had run over it!:(

If you had been at a car show or at the local grocery store and someone chipped a small spot of paint on your car you would be going on about who you wanted to kick someone's ass and how nobody repsects peoples cars and a whole lot of people would get their panties in a twist and tell us how he would have kicked that guys ass.

Now you're all like "What's his problem man?" Here's a clear example of the shoe is on the other foot. You damaged his car. His pride and joy. It might not be your cup of tea, but it might be his. I don't give a shit about a late 90's Cougars, but it might be his automotive baby.

  20. I had a '57 Lincoln cap come off, a truck swerved to hit it... people are assholes.

    A lil of track... Sorta...

But lemme ask ya if your running RADIAL tires on Early steel weels ?

Like in your avatar, Its a '55 chevy, Is that the car & does it have Old Drop center wheels ? Maybe even rivited center's ?

These Early Stock steal wheels FLEX if you run RADIALS on them which distrorts the rim when you go around corners, This makes the full wheel covers fly off.

You could switch to Bias tires, Or New steel wheels & you cap losing days will be over.

Unless of coarse the caps just suck like these tiawan cheapys & fly off anyways.

    JUST A THOUGHT

Glad you posted, that's probably my problem. The PO put new radials on the '55 Stude rims. The Stude guys all tell me that's not a good thing for another reason, the bead on the rim isn't strong enough for the flexing of the radila. One of my goals this week is to find a set of late model 15 X 6 5 on 4-1/2 steel wheels and get the tires switched ASAP.

The one's that think it's your fault the hubcap came off, obviously weren't around when hubcaps were the norm and not the exception. Shit happens, you were trying to appologize, thats enough.

Other drivers SHOULD be mad that parts are flying off your car and hitting theirs.
