I just had this idea. It may be good, it may be bad. But on a whim, I figured what the hell, I'll go ahead and post it to see what you thought. Do you think 300 people would buy one $100 raffle ticket each for a chance to have their car towed to a HAMB event where their car would get finished by a bunch of extremely cool HAMBers that would donate time, parts and talent? What if the HAMBers that were helping got to keep the leftover cash they saved on the build? It would get someone's car finished. It would be EXTREMELY GOOD PR for the HAMB. Because of said PR, a bunch of companies might be interested in donating parts, services, etc. A bunch of guys would be able to get some **** they'll never use out of their garage, and know it's going to a good cause. A bunch of HAMBers would bet some invaluable experience working alongside other HAMBers with ****loads of experience. It's just good karma, and will probably get ya laid - chicks dig that ****, seriously. The HAMB could offer cl***es - people might actually PAY something to learn some stuff, using the car as a ginuea pig either hands-on style, or by sitting, theater-style on some bleachers and watching a pro do his thing. Of course, you wouldn't want the car F'd up, but hey - it's just an idea. Cl***es would have to be REAL small... but the opportunities for some HAMBers to display their talents/trades would be many. Kind of like those "living history museums", but different. Etc, etc, etc... Now, it's easy to say "Yeah, that's a great damned idea - why don't you get started on that right the hell away, and let us know how that goes." But it was just an idea I had at this very moment - sorry. It's "in the raw" and not even fleshed out, and I probably jumped the gun here and posted it too soon. But I was just curious as all hell what the consensus was on this sort of thing. Who knows? Maybe enough somebodies will think it's a good idea and put something into motion, or remember it later on down the road and it'll come in handy. ~Jason
Sounds cool, but it would take alot of careful planning and accountability with the money, etc. Getting the right team of builders, etc,... Also, might be easier to get 600 people to pay $50.
Actually does sound like a good idea, only the details involved might to too great to allow it to see fruitation...
Yeah, I agree. Some of the coolest ideas never come to p*** because the logistics of such endeavors never get worked out. ~Jason
It's a great idea. But could somebody's car really be finished in a weekend? It depends on how far along the build is. There may have to be some limits placed on it just for a weekend. What about starting the work at one HAMB event, have it hauled to a couple of HAMB shops, and then an unveiling at another event. Meticulous photo albums could be kept in the TECH section. Maybe the winner could have the option of hanging along side of whoever is doing the work for a few days. Hell, it's an awesome idea. Tons of possibilities. WHO HERE WOULD THROW $100 INTO THE POT? I would.
My Dubble A wouldn't be finished in a weekend, but it could be gotten very much closer to driving, which would be an awesome thing! Then again, I've also got the RPU that needs the body worked on - various stress cracks, and even a rusted out bed support that'd need worked on. Getting it 'right' for paint and/or painted would be worth the buy in to me.
WOW! Sounds like a great idea, but the perameters would have to be just perfect. You can't paint a car in one day, and ***emble it too. The HAMB Chop was a great idea, was a success. It would be great to do it at a show. How about a HAMB SLAM? HAMB guys lower a car at a show.
What if instead of actually FINISHING the car (who in the hell wants a FINISHED car, anyway?), you get 24 hours of, well, labor mostly... or rather, as much can be done in 24 hours, anyway? ~Jason
i would go so far as to say this... i firmly believe that with the resources at hand here on the board, a car could be built, from scratch and be a running, driving and stopping car in 24 hours.
What about tagging a dollar amount to the weekend, say.......... 5K (just to throw out a number) and the winner chooses whats done? Maybe youve got a nice driver and want some flames and stripes layed down. Or maybe youd love a chopped top but dont have a clue how to do it............ Something like this may help if a guy could drive his car to a chop or flame job, or maybe ship just a frame to be clipped and blasted and painted. There are some incredibly talented folks on here. Hell yes I'd pay $100.00 to have some of them lay hands on my truck!
There was a similar thread a few months ago. There was no raffle involved but it did involve people donating their time to help other builders. I thought it was a great idea and my only contribution was we could call it 'Hot Rod's for Humanity' Gary
Honestly? There's no way you could get me to part with $100 for a one-in-three hundred chance of anything. And definitely not having my car finished. You're talking two years worth of Alliance membership which would be huge money saved guaranteed. I think I speak for most on the HAMB when I say I work too hard for my money and with very few exceptions... would not want to hand my car off to someone else anyway. Also: The HAMB already has extrememly good PR. I'm not trying to drag you down or anything. It's cool of you to even think of something like this for the HAMB. This is just pure gut reaction on my part as a guy building a hot rod on a tight budget.
donate a percentage to charity? then maybe you could write off the "donation"... im not sure how all of that works... just an idea.
Granted, the HAMB does have very good PR. What if money wasn't involved at all? What if the raffle part was retained, but was free, and only involved a bunch of really helpful guys with "mad skillz" that would help you out on your car, with whatever needed help with, for a weekend? One lucky guy could be picked, and if he could get his **** to the event, he'd get like 24 hours of free labor on his car from the best of the best. It could be set up as a totally free thing annual event that ran on nothing but elbow grease and donated parts (from a pre-event list of "wants" and "needs", with parts donated by HAMBers and/or Alliance sponsors). Besides, a bunch of us already have a lot of parts for our cars anyway, and are spending time budgeting the currency of time and elbow grease to get out stuff done. I like free. ~Jason
I guess... only this wouldn't be limited to a chop, and might go on throughout a weekend at an event under a tent, sponsored with donations from individuals and/or businesses (You know, like local O'Reilley's could donate some oil, or a lical bead blaster could donate some blasting, Coker could donate tires (wouldn't THAT be cool?), etc). ~Jason
hows about a car is built with donated parts and labor at several events or shops, as mentioned early, and when it is almost done, like no paint, no interior, but a runner, so who ever wins get to pick the colors and then we auction the ****er off at the HAMB drags and ALL the money goes to ryan...........?
id buy one! God knows how much help I need with my Merc haha. The only thing I would worry about is are the people that are doing the work really good at what they do? it would **** to have to redo something.
Maybe we could combine this with the Rod & Custom dream truck thread. Of course this hinges solely on Ryan's approval and probably some work on his behalf. Maybe preselling raffle tickets, closer to fifty bucks, round up cash for a good platform to start, try to round up parts from whoever will donate. Get one of our artist types to do a rendering to go from, then start p***ing it around to shops with people doing a little here and there. I think it would be easier to localize the builds to, let's say a midwest thrash, a south thrash, east, west and so on. Any one who wants to help can show up for a weekend thrash, trying to get as many hands on it as possible. Then have it end up maybe at the round-up next year for Ryan's approval before the big moment, drum roll please. Some lucky **** gets to take it home or arrange for shipping. I don't know, just turning on the **** faucet in my head **** always pours out. I just thought it was too good of a concept to let it go.
I think this idea is cool as hell. I love the idea of helping out the HAMB as well as one of its lucky members. I will do whatever is needed to help get this on the ball
........was at BBOB's shop not too long ago and he asked if I was gonna do the HAMB Houston/Galveston reliability run......I of co**** declined 'cause none of my **** is drivable....I'm sure I'm the only one in that situation. $, time and talent - 3 factors that govern most all of our builds. Now really, how many of us here [well, a lot, I know] can actually build a vehicle from the pavement up to the tip of the antenna? One or more of the above factors usually wins and you call for reinforcements. I for one would give a nut [probably a 50.00 as opposed to a 100.00 nut] to get some of the god-like hands of the members here near one of my cars. Not to finish it by any means, just to move it along in the areas that are not my expertise. I agree that whatever is done should be done locally/regionally. Maybe runnin' several of the "helping hands" things scheduled around events that could easily be attended by the winners [ya only buy in to win in the project area/time schedule that works for you]. And like was also mentioned, we all have ****piles of parts layin' around. I've collected a ton of stuff that I'm probably not qualified to install on my ride. So while donated parts could be a definite bonus, help a guy/gal get some of their own **** dealt w/as well. ....got "the **** faucet" [..like that] open here as well 2LOW!
Why not do cl***es instead? people pay money and get to go to a cl*** on welding or ch***is fab or paint etc. That way the guys on a budget learn some skills to do it on their own. And come away with something at the end of the day instead of a worthless raffle stub. I would love to do one on casting aluminum parts and there are guys on here with the equipment to do it. And those who could participate come away with a cool shift knob they cast themselves and the knowledge on how to do it on their own.
Hey how about a raffle to win work done at a shop we all love like Austin Speed Shop or Roseville Rod and Custom or who ever is in your local area? I would love to win 5gs twards a fat lucky interior!! or some bread to get the whole car rewired or hell how about the HAMB gets a car we all like 50s merc or shoe box ford or somthin builds a dope ride usin donated talent and raffles that off?
