a gas saving tip

I read on a non related forum that you could save gas but turning your engine off and coasting down hills. I can see knocking your vehicle out of gear and coasting but shutting it off is kinda dumb...case in point... Years ago we went on a wrecker call. There was a vehicle on its side in a ditch. I asked the man what happened and he said he switched the car off going down hill to save gas. When he neared the bottom the car was easing off the road , he turned it to correct this and the wheel locked. Then the "power" brakes wouldn't stop it fast enough and he didn't even get around to turning the switch.. He said the nex thing he knew he was turning over..He said he did this all the time in his Apache truck.

 

So let me see if I understand this correctly...

Sounds kind of dumb and dangerouse to me. How about just makeing sure your tires are properly inflated instead? or shutting off the engine while sitting in line at the drive-up window or waitng for your buddy who takes too long knocking off the liquer store?

 

just fall behind a bigrig, it will draft you along, ha ha

roll up to stop lights slow and try not to stop .. takes alot of energy to start turning the tires again..

 

just make sure you lean to the right or the left so we can see you, its sort of annoying also

 

i knew a guy who did pretty much the same thing only he wan drunk and his car was on E and he was coming down a hill about a half of a mile from his girlfriends house and he was taking her home, and he turned the key off in his 97 camaro and at the bottom of the hill theres a corner and again, his wheel locked and could steer or stop and wham right into the guard rails...needless to say he was given a DWI, drinking under age (him and his girlfriend) his insurance was lapsed, and he still owed on the car and it was totalled.....with no insurance. This was almost 2 years ago and i think he did time for it and got out and got another DWI without a license....hes in the click now needless to say.
