Is anyone else buying this magazine? I picked up my second copy of it today and I have to say its great. 1shot
I was impressed with the winter issue, but a little let down with the Spring '08 issue (not a lot, but I'm afraid of it going too RR) Flatman
I'll have to second Flatman. I enjoyed the first issue with "The Head Skratcher" feature. I didn't really like the second issue though. I'm not discounting the mag yet. The third issue could turn out great.
Being as its put out by what was Peterson publishing, I think its got a lot of potential what with all the archives at thier fingertips. All that great wealth of vintage photography, tech articles, race coverage, etc. just sitting there screaming to be put back in print.
Oh I think it is much better than Old Skool Rods. More Hot Rod Stuff less flub kulture crap. But I like some of that to.
That's what has me excited about it. I love the bit there doing about former feature cars, and trying to track them down. Hopefully they stick with the ones that are a little more obscure, and not the ones we all know. If they can keep corporate out of it, it will will give Traditional Rod & Kulture a run on the stands. I still buy CKD and OSR every month, but only because I have most of the issues of both. Every time I get one of the latest issues of each of those, I always say I'm going to stop, because there is way to much of the "Rat Rod" and "Kulture" vibe, and not enough of the traditional rod stuff I like about the other 2 magazines (HRD/TRK).
Yesterday I made sure nobody was looking and checked OSR to see the pics of Hot Rod To Hell and Fast Eddie in the Billetproof coverage (two pages) then I set it back down and grabbed Hot Rod Delux and Garage. I dig the magazine, no complaints here.
I stopped buying the trashy, convuluted, Kulture Rags about six months in. Those guys no nothing about framing photos, they're distrating to page through, the langage is offensive and they're no order to the presentation of the magazine, Having said that Hot Rod Deluxe dominated the first two issues, but here's what bugs me about them. Anyone who knows hot rods has to know that the Peterson Publishing Library has more great images and stories than any ten current publishers trying to sell car rags, and they know it. If I see one more tattooed babe and a coulple mor e guys french kissing while one holds a shotgun at the clubhouse door, I think I'll puke! Look back into the traditional history that you guys love to fantasize you're a part of...and you'll quickly see that that stuff didn't exsist except in the bowels to the culture that decent folks wanted to avoid. Yes, I was there, and never saw poeple who are idolized in the current crop of Kulture Mags,...I think it's an embarrassment to the hobby. You want to make an impact, build great cars that are safe and learn how NOT to say F*** !everytime you open your mouths...get and keep decent jobs so you can continue to build and share your skills with other young guys disciplined and willing to learn the needed skills. If Peterson wanted to...they could just rely upon their archives to walk you throught the wonders of the age of Custom Cars and Hot Rod building and never shoot another frame. You young guys have been given two ears to listen and learn with, and one mouth to learn to control. Many of you are making modern day Rodding look like a Cartoon Book! I know you have the talent and the ideas, but the culture (as you perceive it) is NOT a wise addition..Before you think to much more about waving your Freak Flags....think quietly for awhile and ask yourself, is this hobby worth preserving and developing even further? Are we here to raise the bar and create things of excellence, or do we want to raise this hobby yo a place where veryone who meets you will be glad to do so, do they want us to be active and welcome members of their communities, or something to oppose and be ashamed of? When there was a great outcry concerning the very cool Trophy Presentations in the Vintage Video a month or two ago...we all saw the way it really was....Guys were happy, not cynical and destructive, girls were both hot and "modest" (it's in the dictionary).....and the quality of cars was outstanding! If Peterson dumbs this down just to "fit in" to the current approach, we will all lose......I Challenge Peterson to put together the best Rodder/Customizing Magazine in the business because you already have more than enough in the Archives to accomplish ...right NOW! This last Issue was crap and you know it...Awful slim and dishonest for a Company who's archives fully eclipse all the other mags capacity put together...And it's no secret that all the material in the Archives has been paid for by use and the old advertisers a thousand times over. You need to get real...and the small guys need to clean up your acts and make magazines for car guys , not for adolescents to wander into the john with for ten minutes. There's enough smut on the net....try to produce magazines that I can share with my grandsons.....you're failing at it, and if Peterson flips the swithch....you're going to lose your place in the market....Goodby Dreams! If it happens, you will bring it upon yourselves...it won't matter, you'll be gone, and Peterson will bring out the second and the third magazines ready to take your place.......My advice is free....it cost you nothing to consider it....and it may be the difference between YOU existing as a rodders publication in 5 years or not.....at least give it some thought....C9
If I could get more tech stuff shoved into Rodders Journal, I'd die happy. Already a great rag, but just a little more..
The third issue is out--has a '55 Chevy gasser on the cover (originally straight-axled at Blair's) with a decent write-up on the car, and an AWESOME feature on a restored '26 T from the '50s. I'm doing some work for them, so I'm biased, but there's a ton of good reading in this issue--it's not a mag you can read in one sitting. 8 pages on a Stovebolt 6 build, 12 pages on chopping a '53 Chevy top, 8 page story story on Vern Tardel and his shop, 8 page story on the Timoszyk family's 6 Willys gassers, my 9 page leaf-link suspension story, plus a retro feature on a '27 T from Dec. '58. Jerry Pitt is busting his ass to make sure the magazine thrives, and is working hard at being better than the competition. He's probably done with "rat rods" too. Quality builds, under-construction cars, and bitchin' hot rods. Maybe a little rough around the edges, but no death traps or cobbled together piles o' crap. And, he knows how to use Spell Check. I saw it on the news stand, and bought it because I didn't want to wait for my free copy. Biased because I write for it? Yeah. But I write for it because it's worth writing for. -Brad
If they can keep corporate out of it, it will will give Traditional Rod & Kulture a run on the stands. IN MY OPINION Traditional Rod and Kulture is the best magazine out there. no one even comes close. not even Rod & Custom. I like to go to Barnes and Nobles and read Ol Skool and DSR, but would never buy one. free entertainment for a while, but nothing worth keeping. Rod & Kulture, Rod & Custom and Rodders Journal is all I buy these days.
theres a huge difference between these new rat rod mags and a mag like hop up. if you say you into traditionally built hot rods, then you would be reading pre 63 mags only. all this other stuff is for mini truckers and vw guys jumpin on the bandwagon. stick to driftin
Fuck off, self-righteous Newbie. Find an AARP meeting if you wanna hear yourself lecture people on how they should live their lives.
I think its a good mag. It has the cars I want to see and some good tech which most magazines are missing.
I love the magazine! If issue 3 is out I will make plans to buy it today at B&N. Its one of my favorite mags along with Rodders Journal, TRK, and R&C . Issue # 1 blew my mind away. Thanks for the heads up on #3. I hope Peterson Pub. keeps this ball rolling for the long term
...the latest issue is worth the price just for the cover and article on that 55 gasser!...and I liked the whole issue just as well. Hope they continue along these lines.
I just picked up the July issue, the very last and the only one that was locally available..... speaking being worth the price, is there any way to get a subscription?
I dig the mag. I think I've picked up every one so far. Much better than some of the rod magazines out there
