I have all the right tools for the wheel, but the horn ring and the plastic cap are not giving it up. Need instructions for the plastic cap and the horn ring. Thanks, it's a 50 Caddy.

Can't be any real solid help but a couple of suggestions from other cars I've worked on. Maybe screws from behind the spokes of the wheel into the horn ring.

Also on my 52 Chev I think the horn button was a snap on unit. Just had to be carefully prised off I think. Good luck

Sometimes they come off by pushing in, holding down and turning one way or the other.

Best disconnect the horn first though:D

    Sorry its a bit vague.

yep, always popped the horn ring off by pushing down, and rotating counter clockwise. REALLY annoying if you don't pull the horn fuse first.

There usually are three lugs on the horn ring that lock into slots on a ring on the wheel. The hard part is getting the horn ring depressed evenly far enough for all three lugs to clear and release. It's not hard to get two of them to clear but the third one still won't let it turn. The horn ring needs to push in evenly until all three clear and then it will turn to the left and pop off. they can be a PITA sometimes. It has to push in evenly before it will turn.

I would whisper sweet nothings and stroke it. That should get your wheel off.

Screws from behind or push and twist, but if those don't work a sledge hammer will.

i know the 54 caddy wheel has 2 screws that hold the horn ring in place they are at an angle towards the center on the 2 horizontal spokes.

    Here you go:
"To remove the wheel, depress the horn button and turn it counter-clockwise until the catch is released and remove the button. Remove the horn button retainer ring and spring, and the steering wheel hub-nut. On the "Special" wheel, remove the horn ring, take out three screws holding the retainer and rubber gasket to the horn ring and remove them. Use a suitable puller to remove the wheel". Motor Manual 15th edition

  13. I pulled a couple off of '52 Cad's in junkyards a few years back, and they were the push, turn counter-clockwise variety. They were both Fleetwoods, so I am not sure which would qualify as a "special" wheel.

    Here's what did it:

30 days ago: I have some vague, perhaps incorrect, understanding about how to get this steering wheel off. So I push, turn left, and the horn ring and button become loose, but refuses to come apart with hand strength or repeated pushing and turning.

20 days ago: Push turn, repeat, many times. At this point, the thought of jamming a screwdriver under that button crosses my mind for an instant. But then it occurs to me that this plastic doodad, which looks to be in really nice condition in my car, would probably cost about $250 to replace.

15 days ago: I start surfing eBay for vintage Chilton's manuals, which I'm going to need anyway.

10 days ago: Push, turn, repeat. Can't...quite...get my finger under there.

5 days ago: Received my old Chilton's manual. It instructs me to "Push, turn, remove button..." Not sure that was worth $50 bucks, but I needed it anyway, right? Push, turn, wiggle, repeat, nothing.

2 days ago: Posted this thread. Advice correctly revolves around pushing, turning and removing with varying levels of detail, all greatly appreciated.

Tonight: Expecting another 5 minute push, turn sessoin, I walk up to it, grab the button, and it comes out with no effort whatsoever, didn't even need to push or turn. I just grabbed it with authority, and it came out.

I guess I just needed to believe.
