Took two rounds out of the front coil. It's too low but the engine, trans and diff are out so the rear will drop when they are back in and I plan on knocking a coil off the rear springs as well.

Then I'll mess with the front again.

Can't wait to drive the goofy thing!

Yeah, the 5 spokes are for this thing. Just a standard backspace. I like how the wheels that are on it fit so I reckon I could measure those tomorrow...

It was originally a powerglide van that someone has since put a posi 4 speed in... :D

Don't ask me what you need a posi for with a whopping 80 horsepower...

jesus... those things had some travel up front. Looks good down low.

I wonder how hard it would be to drop in a real mild sbc or maybe even one of those new fanagled 4.3 liter sixes...

Is that an Supreme or Daisy (type) wheel there in the background? Roll that thing in front of the stock wheel(s) and snap a pic of how it looks.

    BTW, way cool ride.

They are Supremes. They're 15's for the Elky...

I put them in front of the van at one point but didn't dig it. To me the Supremes are a bit spindly looking and fit customs better than a big boxy van.

It may have been the skinny whites that threw it off...

Looks great! It may be a dumb question, but how much work was it to cut the coils up front? I'm thinking of taking at least one coil out of the 'Vair front end in my Es***. Did you take it apart or cut them in place?

    Took them apart.

Jack it up. Put a stand under it.
    Remove the wheel.
    Remove the shock.
Place a jack under the lower control arm. Snug it up.
Remove the brake hose at the bracket. Not the wheel cylinder.
Remove the cotter pin from the castle nut on the upper ball joint.
Loosen the castle nut but KEEP IT ON THE BALL JOINT STUD. MAKE SURE YOU have plenty of threads engaged.
Let the jack down about an inch.
Grab you BFH and hit the spindle on each side of the ball joint. You will see there are two raised flat spots on there to beat on.
The pressure of the spring will help the ball joint out of it's pressed fit.
Snug the jack up again and remove the castle nut all the way.
STAND away from the line of fire and let the jack down.
I had no problem with the spring wanting to pop out but it may get squirrely if you have the HD springs or some setup I am unaware of. USe a spring compressor if it makes you feel better. I did on the first one and realized it wasn't needed.

Figure out how much you want to cut. I took two and it is really too much. These front ends have the pockets for the springs to fit in. Removing full coils is probably best.

Then put the spring back in the lower A-Arm. Start jacking the ***embly back up.
Make sure the upper part of the spring finds its pocket.

Raise the A-Arm and drop the ball joint pin back in.

Put it all back and you're done.

I've heard of people cutting them in place but I can't see how. I'd hate to cut on that thing when it has pressure on it.

  17. That is looking great. I have always been intruiged by the greenbriars. It will be interesting to see what you do with it.

You are a madman. Should have went with 1.5 coils, every time I have cut two on anything it always bottoms out.. the van needs a set of these.. in 14's, with white letter tires.. wide ovals. Always wondered why they would name a tire 'oval', i like mine round..

A 3-4 inch chop makes it look longer.
After driving similar under-powered vans (yes.. VW) long ago I would think it would help with aerodynamics.
These things are like driving 3 bricks stacked together and powered by rubber bands. ;)
I recall TRYING to make it up a major hill and having this guy behind me honking his horn all the way up the hill. He wouldn't p*** me.
At the top of the hill I pulled over, got out and yelled, "WHAT?" at the guy, thinking he was going to rail me for being so slow.
He wanted to know who painted the thing (me) and asked if I'd paint his.
A second story that I will keep short is being p***ed by a VW van with a Porsche engine. The driver had a smile as wide as the van!

Ernie... If you think it LOOKS funky you ought to SMELL it!

I wanted to go 1.5 but wanted to see what two would do. I have other springs to play with so I went for it.

I like to keep the tails of the springs in the pockets as designed. I cut 1.5 off the front of the Elky and now the springs rub the inside of the pocket. You can hear the coils popping through the pocket when it bounces. Kind like the sound those bendy straws make when you exten and smash them back. Only big, and metal... :D

I won't chop it. If I did it would be two inches as that is the max chop on anything that I personally like. Seeing as how all of the gl*** is there and excellent shape I'd rather not spend the money.

By the way, I was looking at a set of those wheels pictured above on Ebay or CL.

Then all I'd need is to paint it orange with a giant 01 on the side and teh confedaret flag on the roof:D

I'm toying with the idea of putting early vette headlight buckets in it which would bring the headlights closer together. Then widen the grill and put some 53 vette teeth in it.

Also maybe put a 59 Chevy dash and gauges in it.

I can't draw but I can see it pretty well in my head.

It will most definitely get **** carpet and probably angel hair headliner... :D

Good point on the noise from the springs. Well put, a bendy straw. That wouldn't give me confidence when driving!

Nice write up, by the way. You should have made it a tech article! Too many skip that little 'leave the nut on enough threads' and watch the Attack of the Slinky when the spring goes flying off. I can't believe how many I hear laugh of 'you should have seen that fly' until I say 'good thing you weren't in FRONT of it!' I had a spring break and come out the side on a DD. Took out tire, strut, rim, fender well...Scared the living pooh right out of me!
