After looking at that oil pump pickup loose in the pan, my next question is what do the rod and main bearings look like? Does any part of the pickup assy. show signs of a strong impact? What does the hole that pickup assy. fits into look like? Answers to these will go a long way in determining cause of failure.
That had been a very strong running engine all afternoon, obviously nothing wrong with it then!
So, if there's evidence of lack of oil, smeared bearings, seized bearings, etc., you can about bet that the oil pickup assy. had to be on until the flame demo, during which demo the pickup fell off and the result lack of oil to the bearings seized it up.
If the bearings look relatively good, then suspect other causes, such as a connecting rod breaking, etc., especially if you find any hint of an impact on that oil pickup assy. that could have been other debris from the destruction occuring just above it and knocking it out of the hole in the pump.
Any time I have lost an engine, I have tried, usually with some success, to figure out what happened. Then you've got to figure out a way to prevent it happening again. That way you have at least increased your knowledge and awareness of how to handle next time.
An expensive lesson, yes, but a lesson.

  6. Whoa, those are some gnarly paperweights. That is ugly Russ, you do good work. :D

DOM, haven't met you yet, but from reading your posts you sound like a welcome addition to the HAMB. Hopefully hanging around with the SFCC doesn't scare you off! :D

Yea Dave, I think you are right. It was the pick-up tube that failed (it was welded, with a nickel rod) somehow the welds broke and it just fell out! No evidence of collision with anything on the pickup, besides it was under the sump splash pan. I havent removed any caps to see the bearings but im sure they are wiped. The caps on #1 and #2 are mangled beyond belief, no way to get them off. Makes sense that #1 would fail first since its fartherest from the pump. Either way my replacement block is already at the machine shop getting POKED and STROKED... CAN YOU SAY 496???

    Impressive carnage!

  11. Total devastation. My condolences to the owner of that poor engine.

Yeah, that's what I thought must have happened when I saw that oil pickup lying there.

That's one hell of a bore/stroke ratio. What was that in?
