Yes, it had a 383 hemi with a clutchflight. The motor was a destroked 426. Fred Cutler drove it and the Hemi-wagon. Jim Thorton sold the Roadrunner to my dad, then Ted set the B/FX record with it in late of 65 right here in Wichita. It wasn't till the following year till that record was broke by Bill Stiles in a 66 426 hemi car. The hemi wagon was sold to Harry Baker of Newton which my dad wrenched on that car also. Jim Hall drove that car for Harry. It was'nt till 66' when Harry's son Tim wanted to go fast, so my dad did many motors for him also.

    Joel:

Great thread! Been roaming through the photos posted and sure brings back some fond memories.

  14. This appears to possibly be the Larry Wilson car not Sox but I'm not sure. Do you have any details on this photo? Can you post some of those great shots from the box on your workbench??:D

    Wally,
Did you ever change to a big motor for match racing down there, or always run class?

I think the other Z-11 is Dyno.....(not certain)
The Dodge in the background..Harold Denton ( I'm pretty sure)

When we came south, we ran the same '30 over Z-11 427 engine Verne.
As you know, Jack May's car (Larry Wilson), was '80 over..five eighths stroker...Ran like hell! ( I ended up with that engine)..Strong !
As I recall, the quickest of All Z-11's. (Larry & Jack)

    Mumbles..Comet memories are Great!

In honor of Phil Bonner's birthday, here's one of my favorite shots from 1966 at LIONS Drag Strip. This was the final round of A/FX with Phil in his SOHC Falcon up against Dick Brannan's SOHC Mustang. Obviously, Brannan was the winner, but Bonner stole the show with this launch. I was lucky to get this shot from up in the grandstands...

  30. I asked Phil about this race. He said he installed wheelie bars on the car before the next race!!!! Great shot...
