there you go & just take the title in & transfer it & get plates & get driving.

  5. When it got chopped it lost the serial tag. Seems to me you just need to "find" that piece of A-post with the tag on it, and rivet it back where it belongs on your car, on the left A-post.

I WISH!!!! WHEN I GOT THE CAR I TRASHED THE OLD ROOF ( VERY POOR CHOP) ALONG WITH THE A PILLARS AND I DONT REMEMBER SEEING A TAG ON IT AND TRUST ME I WOULD HAVE SEEN IT BECAUSE I SPENT A LOT OF TIME TRYING TO MAKE THE OLD ROOF WORK BEFORE GIVIN' UP AND I SANDED THE WHOLE CAR DOWN....EVERY LITTLE CORNER WAS SANDED!!!!

There are outside private companies that work with the DMV for DMV related paperwork and registration. You may be able to look on the net or in the yellow pages (wow, did I just say yellow pages) to see if you have a local business in your area.

I have not used this company before but I was given this number by a friend to registering my roadster for the Year of Manufacture (YOM) original 1928 California License plates.

    Tony's Registration
    (626) 447-2450
    ASk for Diann or David

You may pay a premium but they will take all the hassle out of working with the DMV. These types of businesses have a vested interest in you because they are working for you. I've used a business like this in the past to originally register my Model A Roadster some 20+ years ago.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

    BTW, nice ride you're building!

    WTF DOES THAT MEAN???

  11. Well, I found one the other day on a '49, it split in two when we dragged it out of where it had been sitting, so I twisted off what was left of the left A-post and saved it.

Years ago I did the same thing on a '51 that was sitting up in the woods, the top had been mangled and I was able to pull off that left A-post with my bare hands with a little twisting.

Chevy left A-posts aren't that hard to find, you just need to go out and find one. And they all originally had an aluminum tag about the size of a business card riveted on with the car's serial number on it.

I'm sure yours was long gone when you got the car.

As soon as I read your thread title, I said to myself "I bet this guy lives in California". I'm so fucking sick of getting fucked with by the DMV, the court system, the cops...etc. I get tire markings on my Caddy pretty much weekly from being parked in the same spot on MY fucking street for more than a couple of days. There is an "ordinance" about 72 hour parking. SO I get warnings all the time. The car is in black primer, but it's registered and insured. I am quite familiar with that "postal" feeling.

By the way, that car is bad ass.

Do you have any idea what the VIN is like the reg. or title? If so, couldn't you just stamp it into the pillar? That car is nice so don't let the M>>>F....s win, just keep on plugging. I know you're pissed, I think we all have had to deal with the idiots at DMV. but settle down and let your brain do the fighting for ya. The more you talk to people in your area, the more ideas you'll get. Have you talked with anyone at some of the hot rod/custom car shops in your area? Good luck with this one!!!

You say you know the Vin # cus it has been transfered in reverese on the piller ?

I am not real Hip to the early Chev but i assume the Vin # is SOMEWHERE on the frame.. You need to find it.

I believe the lil Stainless Tags are available Repo so you can re stamp if needed.

Getting a car registered in California is the easiest part of an old build... As long as you have a vin #.. I dont know why people have such a problem other than the dont educate themselves.

If you have a Vin # SOMEWHERE on the car... Registration is simple.

do yourself a favor and call the DMV main office. the number on the web site will direct you to them. and believe it or not those people up there are extremely help full and knowledgeable , unlike the locals DMV. tell them that you bought the car but it hasnt not been registered in years so its no longer in the system. tell them that you have a bill of sale only, and when you bought the car it was not running or drivable, they will tell exactly what forms you will need, which you can download right off their site, also they will tell you that you will have to be inspected by a CHP which can take time. things you will need in the car will be engine, trans, and rear axle. and if you know the vin on the frame, get that too. write down all the vin #s for those components and possible receipts for them if you bought them from someone else. the CHP will give you a new vin number, or he will use the one off the frame, or maybe the imprint on the car door. you will only have to possibly smog it if the engine is a later than 1974. so throw in an old motor and you good there. it will take time, but just make some calls to the right people and they will answer all your questions. if you bought the car out of state DO NOT, i repeat DO NOT TELL THEM THAT YOU DID. it will create a lot more problems
i have not done all this yet but i have made the calls numerous time to the DMV main office to be sure of exactly what forms i need to fill out, and how to go about getting it registered as the year of the vehicle.
    hope that helps
    Dave
PS your local AAA are just about as smart as your local DMV, as in not very smart when it comes to something thats not in their computers, call the DMV main office. they DO knwo what needs to happen

These cars where titled by the vin number on the motor! Unless someone changed the title to have it match the body tag, the number in the door is not how it was titled. Does the car still have the original motor? If the number in the door matches the title someone could have copied the number from the motor onto the door to make inspections easier for the DMV. If you have the original 216/235 look to the left of were the distributor is, theres a flat spot, remove the gunk and you'll see your vin!

Find a junker of the same type car and get the critical VIN stuff off it (frame/body/engine, whatever is needed) and the paperwork, the other car becomes junk or parts and use the VIN and paperwork for registration for your car. If you register it as a new assembly of parts, you will likely have to smog it as they will probably consider it a new car even if it is a bunch of old parts. They have to categorize it as either a new car or a car of a certain year and if you don't have the critical VIN info to register it as a certain year, they probably don't have much choice other than assume it is a 2008 something. They are just trying to make sure you aren't dealing with stolen car/parts or trying to pull a trick on the year so as to avoid smog requirements, past legal issues with the old VIN, etc. What you are trying to do makes sense, but you have to use a bit of common sense too and see it from their side. You can only imagine all the total BS trickery and outright illegal activity these guys must have to deal with everyday. Personally, knowing the kind of numbnuts I see at the DMV every time I have to go there, there is no way I would ever work there. I'd probably have to jump the counter on at least one person a day.

one of the main reasons i'm glad i'm in wa.state even as fucked up as they are! i spent considerable amount of time tracking down the paperwork for the 54'coe in my avitar as it had pased countless hands since 1985! finally tracked down the grandson/son and finally the wife of the registered owner. the son sent me a idaho title for the small sum of sending him some pictures of the truck. i was geting ready to give up and use a title service or just apply for a "bonded title".

This is the way to go.

I learned a long time ago that these title services get the job done. A lot of the chicks I know locally that run these little services are former DMV employees that used to work at the big DMV office in Tallahassee (state capitol) and they know EVERYONE at the DMV. And they can get ANYTHING done for the right price.

Chances are they can get on the phone and bullshit with one of their many friends at the DMV for 5 or 10 minutes and can accomplish what it would take you weeks of legwork and ass-kissing to get done (if it got done).

Essentially they're insiders. They know how to get around the rules.
