i found a 292 chevy on craigslist somewhat nearby..it came out of a john deere combine..whats the difference between that and one that came out of a car/truck?

I would think nothing. Lot of engines came out of pumps and farm equipment. The fuel delivery might be a little different. Other than that I would say nothing.

    Thats my best guess...

might have a better crank, or block could be high nickel, worth taking a look at.

    Its all the same.
when I was in marine school, the first engine I rebuilt was a Crusader 165. It's a 292 Chev. 6.
I coulda swapped out the exhaust manifold, thrown it into any late model Chebbie and gone on down the road.
There was a 292 "truck block" that had thicker cylinder walls.
All of the Nova 6's (194-292) were only good for a .040" overbore, but the truck block was good for .060" over.
If it runs, it should be able to swap straight in (minus any miscellaneous parts that may be attached, which would've been specific for the tractor application).

The 292" is a truck engine.

Swap right in , ah no . Good choice for an upgrade, but by no means just a swap right in.

    100 Bucks for a 292 is a steal ! Buy it quick

The 292 won't "swap right in" where a 235 was. Shouldn't be too difficult, but it won't be a bolt in deal. The 216-235-261 was a different series from the 194-230-250-292 series. And to clarify, the 292 was only available as a truck motor, it wasn't offered in Novas.

And don't forget the flywheel bolts are 1/2 " not 7/16 ". Just drill out the bolt holes on your small block flywheel/flexplate..

So you're saying rev616 has a Nova that currently has a 235 in it?

...and apparently you've never lifted the hood on an early 70's full sized GM, whose owner opted for the optional "big 6".
They did come in cars, although you don't see that mentioned on the internet much.

    292s never came in cars(that i know of)...only trucks/equipment.
i do not know if there's a difference between a truck and equipment though...i doubt it...

oh, and as far as it going in your '51, its not too bad. i've got one in my '53. definatley takes some thought...i know it's "just an inline" as the sbc guys would say;) but its a BIG inline. at least a couple inches longer than the 235 and taller as well. i had to move my radiator foward about 2+ inches to even fit an electric fan. its a rad engine though. if you do it, Tom Langdon sells some motor mounts that are almost a bolt job for these ch***is/the 250s & 292s,...i had to "tweak" mine a little to skoot the engine forward of where the mounts put it (put the head ON the firewall). but all in all good mounts. AND also, get Langdon's headers for it...they were a ***** to fit in there(had some firewall clearance issues) but with those and straight pipes(haven't finished the exhaust yet) it sounds pretty damn good at idle, a bit too much at rev, but almost has a big block lope to it....well, that and i have a lil' cam in it with a 500cfm carter AFB:D

hit the www.chevytalk.com site and all the info you need for your swap will be there. the 292 looks similar to the 194-250 blocks but the p***enger side motor mount is is further forward and block is taller. any late model trans will bolt to the 292.

    rev616,

My apologies. When I replied before, I thought you had mentioned it was going to go into a late model GM.
Yeah, you won't exactly be able to "throw" it in there, but it will fit nicely, with a little work.
