Cool. Never knew Gene Altizer had a Corvair funny car. I grew up a couple of blocks from his house. Rosenthal Chevrolet was right down the street. Used to see lots of touring funny car rigs on Glebe Rd, that I guess were staying with him while in the DC area. Mostly I remember the Pak Rat Vega and his blue Chevy ramp truck.

  3. That Ford of yours is just way toooo cool! Nice to see in a sea of Chevies! Love the 406s! Thanks for posting these pics. Bob

That's Lyde Wages. My Dad still talks about this guy! He's from my families neck of the woods (Louisville KY area) and was a hard racing bad MOFO. Sponsored by TOOHEY'S AUTO SUPPLY. "If your car goes PHOOEY, call TOOHY'S."

I spent many a saturday in the Toohey's off Preston Hiway in Okalona as a kid, staring at all the speed parts and lookin' at pictures of racecars they sponsored on the wall. AWESOME. I tried to buy a gasser they used to back when I was a teenager. It was a blue '53 Ford post with a 'glass '55 Chev flip front on it. It was in a tiny junk yard, all beat up with no motor...probably around '81 or so. Man, thanks for posting that picture!

The first 3 are from Us 30 Gary, IN. The second batch were taken in Roanoke, VA. I think I was in the first grade when pictures those were taken...by someone else.

The Dixie Flyer pic (a Hog Mountain car) was in Bradenton I think about 2001. It ran 7.60, 180 with a street blower on an iron headed 468. It's a cackle car now, the BancAmericar.

Of the Flying Dutchman cars, this and the Charger form the following year rank amongst my favorite. The M/T Equipped log is more then mere endorsment, but was to serve notice that every available component offered by the company was used in the car; blower drives, headers, pistons, rods, valves, wheels, etc. This car made some really nice burnouts too.

I agree; it was my favorite "Dutchman" car. (But the '64 Plymouth is my second fav) It's one of the reasons I still love '66 Darts, and why I'm building a doorslammer funny car '66 Dart right now.

Would Gene be open to answering questions about the UDRA circuit he once competed on? He really did get a lot of ink back in the day. Get him to join so we can barrage him with questions.
