I was just curious. I know where a crashed Pinto is and I am trying to find info on what type of rear end thay came with. I am looking at it because of it's narrow width for my Model A. I am using a 302 motor. Not mega power but still some juice. I have not looked, but I am not sure if they have 4 bolt or five bolt or how they would hold up.
USA pinto rears were 4 lug . They are pretty good and you can get a LSD kit for them . I have one in my Metro . BUT !!! Not strong enough for a V8 !!!
Only the V8 Mavericks and the ones with the optional 250 six cylinder were 5 lug. The majority of Mavericks were 4 lugs. But ... the Mercury Comet version of the Ford Maverick ... came with the 5 lug 8 inch rear ( same as the Mavericks ) ... Two of these are Comets and two are Mavericks. The junk yard I go to has at least ... 15 or more
I have a 7.5" Pinto rear end under my '29 RPU. It works fine, and I'm pretty sure it has 4 lug hubs. I've got 1.5" spacer/adapters to run the 5x5.5 Ford '35 wire wheels. Of course, I've only got the 2000cc Pinto 4 cylinder and 4 speed in mine, so I don't have to worry too much about breakage. With the stock width, 1.5" spacers, and 35 wheels, everything fits well under the fenders.
The pinto rear is wider than the Maverick( which is 50" from plate to plate) f the Maverick is 5 lug it will be an 8"...All the Mavericks built 75 and later regardless of engne will have 5 lug wheels..SO GO with the Maverick unit if you can get it..Pinto stuff is all 4 lug even if it's the 8"..
5 on 4 1/2 bolt circle and yes the later mavericks and comets all had the 8 inch rears.. I found a yard with 4 of em here in michigan a few years ago.. Dave

While we're on the topic, I have heard rumors that some of the early Mavericks had 8 inch rears with a 4 x 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Can anyone confirm this?
mustang II had a 4 bolt pattern as did the early mavericks with 6 cylinder rears in em but ive never seen an 8 inch out of a maverick or comet with a 4 bolt.. Dave
I dont agree with the statement that there not strong enough for a V8. My buddy runs a stock rear in his 392 stroker, high 9 second Pinto wagon that will pulls the front wheels high enough off the ground to s****e the rear bumper (I can provide pick) and it holds up just fine
Pintos and Mustang II will four cylinder motors had the 6-3/4" integral carrier axle. They can be told by the removable rear cover plate on the back of the differential. Think junior size 7.5" or 8.8" axle. Pretty iffy witha V8 engine unless you are running skinny hard rubber tires. The V6 Pintos, Pinto station wagons, and V6 Mustang II had the 8" removable carrier axle. Smaller version of the 9" axle. Plenty strong for a V8 if in good shape / built right. Mavericks with the 250 cubic inch inline 6 definitely had the 8" axle with 5 lug hubs. Had one myself a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. Piper106
