The C&O Austin ended up in the hands of Gene Hicks in 1967, who ran it under the banner of Hicks and Sons. The car resurfaced in the mid 70's with new owner Paul Weidlen who both bracket raced it and then campainged it as a Pro/Gasser. It was dubbed Cap'n Crunch. The white sports car on the bottom was sold by Airline Auto Sales. Based out of Pomona, they sponsored several cars over the years including a top fueler. This was when Pomona ran monthly drags under the auspicies of the Pomona Timing Association.

What caused the king pin boss to break off the Winged Express was not so much one of Mike's wheelstands but the fact that there was hardly any penetration in the weld that supposedly held the boss on the end of the axle. I still have the axle at my shop and it is a classic example of pretty but non functional welding. Lovely beads but way too narrow and not enough heat. Hopefully I will find some time soon to repair the chassis and axle and return it to its old roll bar with braces configuration as seen in the early photos.

That would be "Jim Peace". And if you've ever seen Dale "The Snail" Emery, you'd know that he was a tight fit in Pure Hell... never did fit under the roll bar.

That was Paul Weichmann that owned and drove Cap'N Crunch. Gas pedal on the right side of the tunnel, brake pedal on the left. I always got a kick how he sat in that little cab. He's still around, racing Pro Gas, driving a Cutlass.

  7. The AA/HR designation comes from the early years of drag racing. Double A indicated it was a blown engine in the top cu. in. class. With out the blower would have been A/HR. H/R is "hot roadster" the designation for a fuel class. The same car on gas would have been AA/R. These class designations evoloved in to the Altered class callouts. This same engine/fuel combination would later be AA/FA. That is a very early shot of Pure Hell.

Those for sale adds make me cry.

  9. Isn't that where Fix It Again Tony comes from??

  10. Might have been one of the Goodguys VRA races. Never saw anyone on the tower side during one of those races.

  11. That's my friend Larry Fator in the 46' delivery. 406 ci. sbc, and he beats on it hard. Larry is as old school as they come. His shop is a walk back in time. Great collection of old speed equipment.

  12. Got that close at San Gabriel, and only a 4 foot chain link fence. You could lean over!

  13. I heard when K&G was running the 554, it was called "The Bitch Is Back". Anyone know if that's true?

I will second that on Larry's shop Dean. I was there the other day to B.S. and I told him his shop is like a museum, you could spend hours looking at all the cool stuff.

  15. Know where the "Lo Blo" name came from?

One of the Campos Brothers earlier cars had a Potvin front mounted blower.

  16. I like that it was when SWC were black!;)

  17. I love the title of the race. Yeah, like those two were stockers!!!

  18. 430 Lincoln motor. Probably didn't run all that good, but bet it sure had a sound!!

  19. That has to be a real early pic of the car-no lettering yet, no plexi in the windshield either. Early pic of Pomona too. If the top of the pic wasn't cut off, you'd probably see some guys watching the races for free from the top of the old packing house across E street in the background. During the Winternationals there were always phone company guys "checking out the poles" all weekend.

  20. That was Jim Miles' Magic Muffler Fiat at Lions. Gray Baskerville called that the greatest drag racing photo ever. Had a big blow up of it in his office at Peterson. Jim Miles is recreating the car. Saw it at the Road Kings Santa Anita show two years ago.

  21. I saw another photo that must have been clicked in the very next second showing a huge fireball. Bet this one caused old Jim to soil his shorts!!

  22. I had always thought the fireball shot was the second pic. Looking at the back ground, he seems to be just a bit further out. Thanks for posting these together.

  23. Bet he's taking inventory of his personal parts!!

  24. And that's the point!! The only thing better is to have much of this floating around in your old brain. Of course I had misplaced it untill these picture began showing up!!! ;)

  25. OCIR!! Saw a lot of 64 car fuel shows there. Fucking yuppie houses, and offices now.

  26. No I can't. A streamliner with that same engine configuration got him killed on the salt.

  27. Beat this car at the Winternats. 63,4, or 5 ?? CRS won't let me remember the exact year. See those long spring shakels? All those did was make it go straight up at the hit. Time he came down we were at the top of second. Not a great chassis idea.

  28. I think Big Jim pushed more than a head gasket. Check the chunk of something hitting the track!

  30. Probably broke the pipe off after they fired it for the run. A warped or cracked exhaust valve could result from cold air entering the port after shut down. That's why you used to see the circle track guys shove a wadded up rag in the tail pipes after a race. Problem was a lot more common with the old valve metal.
