  1. The 41 Willys of Atts Ono was one of the cleanest gassers that ever ran. One off machined parts all over it. Today they's call them "billet", but man was it impressive in ' 63!

  2. I believe that's Jim Nelson watching Danny Ongias pushing the Dart for a win at Pomona.

  3. I just did.

  4. Things wern't as chickenshit in the 60's!

  5. I'm looking at a pic shot from the other side of the track here on my office wall. You can see the blower about 20 feet up in the air. My son in law and I were about 20 rows up on the pit side, and a guy two rows down caught a piece of the block in the forehead. He was so shit faced on beer he never felt it! We felt the concussion 20 rows up. I had Doug sign the pic, and his comment was "I'd like to forget that one"!

  6. Pretty sure it's the Hilborn fuel pump.

C & T Strokers should like the pic of the Magic car. The crank is on the track but looks to be in one piece. Every thing else broken. Thats a great picture!

  8. I was! Best ride of my life. 144 in my roadster, tossed the laundry just past the bridge and it jerked the rear tires 6 inches off the pavement! Diest told us the chute was only good to 130...he was right. Raced Burke Le Sage in Don Alderson's AA/R for top eliminator. My roadster-301 small block, Hillborns, T-10 four speed. Don's roadster-blown 392, La salle 2 speed. I was running 18.80's, Burke 19.0's. I got to the et light first. I heard that angry Chizzler coming. Just held on as he blew by at 180 in the speed lights.

Just noting what Kiwi Kev said. How is it possible to have nostalgia for something that you never experienced? It happens to me everytime that I see these old photos from drag racing's earlier days, and of the meets at the dry lakes. It all makes me wish that I was there and sometimes you even feel like you there, or that you were supposed to have been there. Odd.

  10. Anyone who ever saw the late Elmer Trett run over 220 on his T/F Harley won't give you any shit!

  11. Look at those headers. Now there was a car with a sound all it's own!

  12. I second that. Give it it's own section so it's quicker to find.

  13. Now, there's The Man!!! Don tuned and drove my roadster in the early days when he worked at Service Chevrolet in Pasadena. No one better at rowin' a 4 gear.

Did Elmer Trett ever have a Harley that ran 220? His fast bikes were all of Jap origin.

  18. Saw an interview with Elmer, don't know the year, and he was in his shop working on a blown fuel V twin. He aluded to the motor being "mostly of his design and build". Guess it could have been anything??? I'm not into bikes. I saw V twin barrels and assumed Harley. I'll say this, he was a character.

  19. Would that be Zane Schubert in Chet Herbert's twin olds F 85 car?

  20. Love the battery perched on the frame tube! Obviously not an NHRA track!!!

  21. One of the best pics yet. Really sends the message of how brutal top fuel racing is. Cool!

One of the Campos Brothers earlier cars had a Potvin front mounted blower.[/quote]

Here is a bit of trivia. Driver Tom Ferraro made it into the medical journals as a result of a fire he suffered behind the wheel of the Lo Blow altered in late 1969. Seems the severity of his burns where of a dgree that no one before had survived. Well he did and returned to the driver seat upon healing. His survivial earned him reference in the New Journal of Medicine, or rather the regime used by his doctors received note.

Classic shot of Bob Downey with the Howard Cam Rattler car. Note the intricate lace trim appearing like the skin of a diamond back "rattler".

  26. Bet that dude was sorry he didn't use that camera.

  27. And thats why Rick Stewart stands BEHIND the line!!
