I usually have most of these answers but find myself needing the help of the HAMB on this one. Anyone know what it fits? Mallory Model R Type 11A
I'm pretty sure this isn't for a Model A or B Ford. It's got an 8 lobe cam and CW rotation. Anyone???
mallory is now owned by mr. gasket. if you go to the website and search around in there help section you can find an email for where you can ask them the specs on a distributor. they've helped me identify a couple dizzy's before
11A is definitely banger...so the next question is what the hell happened to it?? I think from pic it has an 8-cylinder cap as well? I think maybe the shank area of body where it would insert into a B head (marked 1 3/8) has been turned longer. Are there marks there to indicate such or an A-B distributor around to compare? Could be altered for a timing foot clamp or an entirely new application... I need to look at one I have that has a long shaft like that...I never checked to see if it was made same length as stock+extension shaft or whether its an oddity lengthened for an OHV setup. R prefix?? Will look at mine and see if any have that. In any case, I think it is certainly an A-B but someone has altered it for an entirely different job. This thing clearly had an interesting and unusual life...
Another thing...I notice two screwheads side by side there at top of body. Would the extra happen to be a 1/8 pipe plug, with another on the other side?? If so, this particular what-the-hell puts a combine application into the history!!
If I recall, it was the Funk bros.that made a 8 plug head for an A-B conversion to aircraft use. I have seen a few of the heads...just a guess!
WOW!!! As usual, great info to be found on the HAMB. It seems as if the body was originally for a banger, but someone has modified it for something else? I don't have the dist. with me right now, but will post answers to Bruces question later today. I wouldn't think it's for a twin-plug 4 cylinder as the rotor is just a single sided rotor and I think you'd need a double sided rotor to fire both plugs at the same time. I sent an email to Mallory and got a response. For the enjoyment of fellow HAMBers...here is what I wrote and their response....gotta love customer service now-a-days!!! I wrote: I need help identifying an old Mallory ditributor. It's from the 50's and it's an old 2 piece cap distributor. I have a 1964 Mallory catalog I use for ID all the time, but this must be too old even for that catalog? Model: R Type: 11A Serial No. 9769 Is there a PDF file or some other source of information about the old Mallory products? I have tons of the old old Mallory ignitions and parts and have some that I can't ID. If you have a chart or something to reference it would be greatly appreciated. 847-382-3089 Matt Matt Werksman Fox Valley Hot Rods www.foxvalleyhotrods.com Mallory's response: sorry we do not have a PDF for old distributor, if you give us the p/n off it we can tell you what it fits I just had to laugh.... I'll be back tonight with more info Bruce and Heathen!!! Thanks for your help. Maybe we can figure out what it was turned into???
Wouldn't a shaft from a chevy V8 dropped into there look about like that and account for the rong wrotation? I've got to check out my long-shaft 11 and see if it has any wierditude I didn't notice...
Looking at that reminds me of a Pontiac straight 8 Mallory I sold a bit ago. It had a long shaft like that and the same tang for oil pump. I will look for picture tonight.
It wouldn't be the first old Mallory distributor I'd seen that had been converted for use in another engine.
It's funny you guys mention a Chevy tang drive shaft, that was the first thing that came to my mind!!! It looked like the shaft and plate out of a Chevy with no gear at the end. I thought someone had started to convert it to a flathead Ford and goofed on the bore size where it mounts and just gave up. But striaght 8 Pontiac or Buick crossed my mind after talking with my dad. He said they used go on a diagonal across the engine and it looked sort of like this? I'll post more info soon. This is getting good
OK, dragged out a bunch of variants. Mallory started making Ford Banger distributors in 1929, and I don't think any 2 were the same! Findings: Plenty of similar ones, but no "R" Body shank on yours is unaltered, shaft seems about right length for banger distrib+the second shaft...now it occurs to me, though, that yours ends in screwdriver tip but normal lower shaft I think ends with slot, screwdriver being in the gear assembly...meaningless since yours obviously has furrin innards with the backward rotation. I do have one Mallory with apparently original long shaft to eliminate the extra part. Earlier Mallory advance innards could be flopped to reverse rotation...don't think that applies to this general kind, though. So...no mysteries solved...
I have one and have seen others from combines. They have two short pieces of steel tubing with fittings on both ends connected to the 1/8" pipe holes. I used to have a theory, I think relating to avoiding confluence of grain dust and spark, but don't remember WTH I speculated. There was one shown in "Secrets", and I wrote in with questions for the readership, but editor completely screwed up the question and showed it with a vac brake banger Mallory from the thirties. By the way, stuff one guy had at Hershey suggested that maybe all generations of the banger big Mallory, at least 4 or 5 models before the present little pathetic ones, were used on combines.
I follow you Bruce....but what about this being for an 8 cylinder? It's got a single sided rotor, an 8 spot cap and an 8 lobe cam??? Gotta love old hot rodders!!!
A fews ago I called Mr. Gasket looking for some help ID'ing an old Mallory. They mailed me a complete list, and it lists model 011 as a 1928-1932 Model A and Model B, Ford, 4 cylinder Left Hand Rotation. Just my small input... Tom
The 8 cyl cap really technically doesn't matter ive heard of plenty of people running 4 bangers with 8 caps, just a couple of holes are empty, they havent built the 4 banger caps in a long time As for mallory's customer service it was really good for me a couple time a couple of years ago, but now they suck, i know Can anyone post a chart of #'s??
It simply has non-Ford application shaft and cam; Modify or toss for banger use, replace with some CCW Mallory innard cut to length... But the interesting part remains! What the hell use was this modified for???
