I have noticed a lot of hot rods getting ripped off lately. It makes me wonder, has anyone ever installed a GPS system in their car? I know about Lojack, but a GPS would enable a person to track the car themselves and maybe catch the theives red handed. If someone had my car, it would be nice for me and a few friends to get there before the cops were called. To "talk" to them for a while.
You can put a Lojack on anything. cars, trucks, equipment, laptops.. I enjoy the idea of beating the crook's****, but theres always that risk he has more friends than you do..
my understanding of gps is that it is a receiver- that is it receives satellite signals and calculates its position. This is displayed on a screen so you know where you are. Unless it transmits (like lojack) then only the thief would know where he is. If they sent their location how/ why do people get their gps stolen? If there is a way to set a gps to send the coordinates please let me know as I have one I would set up so I could "meet" the borrower of my car/truck.
my gps was stolen like a month and a half ago. Cops told me they won't even come out unless i know who did it. At that point I will handle it. Lojack is the way to go to make sure you find your***** if it's taken.
There are actually a few different types of GPS systems. The ones I'm thinking of are used by companies to monitor their trucks and cars. I know my T Bucket is no where near as nice as the cars that have gotten ripped off, but if it came up missing, I'd sure as hell want it back. I was looking at this, you get a certain amount of checks per year depending on which package you buy. You can get a satellite photo of where your car is on your own computer. http://www.gpsmobiletech.com/

No lojack, but I can lay my Olds on the ground(bags aren't always for groceries) and shut off the power to the switch box, cut the air flow off, so even if they get power to the switches they don't have air to raise it up. Also I can shut the fuel off and the power to the ignition, all with a few little switches I have hidden in the car(and no they are not right under the dash).
I remember watching that Harrison Ford movie "Firewall" awhile back. Reason I point it out is that his family had a dog that had a small GPS tracking device on the collar in case the dog ran away. I wonder if that is simple enough and was a real thing. If so, I wonder if you could run several of those 'collars' on all of your vehicles to track any one of them through the area. I'd also like one of these for when my daughters start dating.....
Thanks, I forgot to do a search for a previous thread. I'd just really like to know if anyone has used something like this and if it was successful in catching the thief. It seems if it did work, some of the highend cars would have them, but they don't. I'm just curious as to why.
run a wire from your coil to a metal stud im the drivers seat, and have a switch in between. when you park your car close the switch. when the thief tries to start the car he'll get 30,000 volt right up the****!!!!!... just dont forget about the switch or YOU get zapped. wont kill you or even injure you, but it will hurt and you'll only forget once
Verizon offers a tracking system for your kids - you can track your kid's cell phone from your cell phone or Verizon's website. It's like 5 or 10 bucks a month for a second phone sharing your minutes, and it would never get used. Give it power from a dual-battery splitter, a 12 volt bike battery, and a charger. It'll work for weeks. Hide it well - like must remove body panels to get to it.
all of the rental cars and trucks today have tracking system in them. its really too bad when your enjoying a show and some lowlife rips off your ride! i have recovered one that was stolen and i can tell you this punk was out numbered 31 to 1!: as in me and a 30 round clip in a mini 14!*****er was begging me to call the cops.

SLAM your car and disable the bags some how add a alarm system that alerts your phone and throw in a GPS snitch/ lojack for good measure.. BAM! if the crook beats that coctail then i cant say nuthin..
wire a cell phone (cheap pay as you go) in the car to a constant hot (maybe put it in the trunk somewhere) Seems like it could be triangulated at least? maybe not just thinkin
A non-cellphone type satallite locater system would certainly be an advantage in recovering a vehicle that would be worth investing in. the Gps mobiletech system has definete possibilities and would be worth looking into. It appears that all you need to locate the vehicle is an internet connection an computer access. And a paid up account of course. The big issue is if the GPS will work in a building, or under cover such as a covered carport. My new handheld GPS that is made by a top maker will not work in the house with regular shingle roof so it won't locate anything that is inside a building. That wouldn't help a bit even if it could send a signal back to the laptop.
Well I don't claim to be a tech wiz kid but I have been around the block. Did you hear about the guy that got convicted of stalking for putting a gps in the wheel well of his ex girlfriends car? I can think of a million ways to electronically disable the car but in a car with no steering or transmission lock all it really takes is for the thief to bring there own battery, open you hood(if you have one) and jump it. Of course if the thief is like a repo guy he doesn't even have to get running. That being said a gps is the only real way to protect it(unless they have a copper lined conex). You do have to recover it quickly before its stripped. You also have to hide the device well which can be tricky in bare bones hotrod. The new cars with onstar and the like have direct links to onstar. In the case of and accident they can send emergency help with no input from you. They can also disable the vehicle if its reported stolen or you don't make your payments for example. But unfortunately onstar is currently an option on all models so it functions independently of the ecm and can very easily be disabled. So like a alarm it is not a failsafe. If someone really wants your ride then they will have it.
I just put a gps in a customers car the other day so the parents can monitor the kids driving.It'll send a text message to the parents phone if the car goes over a set mph,tracks location,has a bunch of different options.It was about $300 just for the gps.I had to hide it so the kid wouldn't find it,and then its hard wired to constant power.The antenna was hidden in the A pillar, the rest up under the dash.If I ever get my car done, this seems like a cheap insurance policy.here's a link to the one I put in,it was as easy as putting a radio in. http://www.gpstechnologies.net/prod...C=standard&OVADID=522928021&OVKWID=1838026021
BUT,....none of that helps if someone just pulls up to your ride, hooks a chain up to it and pulls it off, or if its in gear, just pulls it onto a rollback. THAT is the easiest thing to do,....pull up and if anyone says anything tell people you're with the city or township and its getting towed. That's the thing you have to prevent against! Good neighbors and good relationships with themhelp,..so all the whining about******y neighbors,...well, they can sometimes be your best allies! I know some of mine are good and will watch for suspicious dopes snooping around. One called the cops a year ago about a guy who stopped and started poking around when I was at work,...they kicked the guy out FAST! Better than me beating his**** with a baseball bat.
weld some meathooks to the frame underneath at such an angle that they dig into the asphault. they wont drag it far
I think the snitch is the one I saw before. Need to subscribe but you can set it that it'll message you cell phone if it moves and can track it online.
trust me they didnt get my gm a body 12 years ago and now when i am done with the 52 their not going to get it either, the only thing with elcetronic transmitters is that you cut the power and its useless. most theives have a trailer or a hook waiting down the road for it so by time you notice it gone powers been cut and its long gone, have found this out from the years of being in the towing industry best thing to do is micro or reed switches, with a reed switch you need a small magnet to connect the contacts by passing it over the switch then when your done pass it back over and its disabled
I plan on putting Ravelco units in both of my cars. It won't stop somebody if they show up with a tow truck or trailer, but at least the jackasses won't be able to hotwire the car... Here's their website: http://www.nohotwire.com
but if its sittin on the ground theres no way you can get under the car ,or get a jack under it to cut em. also used hardened steel hooks. a true theif will always find a way though.
I've heard people talk about 1000 volts at each door handle, but I believe you could get busted big time for that, not to mention kill some unsuspecting innocent person..even a kid, which would be horrible! My idea involves a hydraulic system where spikes similar to those used for horseshoes would comes straight down and slam into the ground at dead center of each tire when you park it and set the system along with a wheel lock that disables each hub from rotating. They can always disable an alarm system, if it doesn't start they can tow it, but to tow it with four spikes slammed into the pavement and wheels that won't turn they'll need to get all 4 wheels off the ground. The spike part is easy enough to figure out and would coincidentally double as a jack system if done correctly, the wheel/brake lock would involve a line-lock system where you would step on the brakes and lock the fluid to each cylinder using a hidden switch of some sort. Lastly, include a SILENT alarm that notifies you via your cell as well as the police at the moment the car is touched and another seperate alarm that yells "I'M BEING STOLEN" a long with a loud siren that ONLY activates when the angle of the vehicle changes from stationary... at the point where the alarm sounds off they'd already be starting to steal it and would be surprised by it and wouldn't be able to run off really quick because they would be hooked up to the car at that point... Caught RED HANDED!!
