What are you going to build your daughter

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by PoPo, May 23, 2008.

  1. I wasn't blessed with girls, but my oldest boy started driving an old MGB which later got passed down to his younger brother. I totally agree with starting them in a 2 seater, and we had a rule that I had to approve who rode with them and whose cars they were allowed to ride in. My oldest one helped build his '58 Apache SWB and the younger one is helping finish his '50 Fordor.

Common sense (yes, I know its rare) and good upbringing are important. My niece got stopped a while back, the officer thought she had been drinking because she wandered across the center line three times in 2 blocks. Turns out she was texting a friend. My sister took the cell phone away and grounded my niece, no driving and she has to go through a driver safety class. Best of all my niece is having to pay for the class herself.

All kids can make mistakes and poor judgements, it's how we deal with the issue that makes a difference. My oldest boy's P/U had a mild 283 with 3x2' and a rock crusher 4 speed that he drove through most of high school without ever being stopped. His first experience ever with the police was while driving back to college (age 21), he got stopped driving our Nissan 300ZX by OHP and cited for 25mph over. I made him pay the ticket out of his savings even though he wasn't working. Talk about slowing someone down, he still doesn't speed four years later.

Dude, chill. I think you misunderstood my tone. Not trying to be preachy or lecturing, just seen it play out with a few friends and it usually ended with my friend being frustrated over the whole deal, that's all.

it all depends on their attitude. i've got two girls 5yrs, and 3months. i have no clue what they will drive, i don't even want to think about it. the older gets so flustered about anything i don't think she will ever have the confidence to get behind the wheel.

My 17 year old helping me put the engine back in what she'll be driving. I told her she can only drive it if she helps, as you can see she doesn't have a problem with that, but she's a "daddy's girl" anyway. She'll also be driving my F150 4x4 King Ranch as a daily. My 40 Ford Tudor will be her's one day as well....

My daughter's first ride was my '64 chevy 1/2 ton w/350-350, Edelbrock RPM, Rochester Quadra-Toilet, and straight pipes. (Also lowered into the weeds). She drove that for 6 years then sold it as dad lived too far away to work on it. I gave her my '67 289 Mustang convertible for her birthday two years ago.
My son got the '60 MGA.

My three-year-old says she wants to be a rock star-astronaut (whatever that is) and wants a purple hot rod.

I can help her with the second one.

I was blessed with 4 daughters! Anyone one of them would take a vintage car over an import any day! They can spot a hot rod from a mile away and each one of them can tell me what year and model it is. That must be their mother's talent.........;)

    Agreed 100%

And why is everyone so worried about backseats or pickup beds? I used the hood more than once... Where there's a will, there's a way.

My 11 yr old is begging me to find another 51 52 f1 and I have. Just need to find when the old man will be at home as to get it. He happens to also have a few others I want and would like to get a group rate on the deal. She wants a truck so that when driving she will have no more than one person in the truck with her. And just like I had installed in my 64 Cadillac 3 point seatbelts...her request before I mentioned it. She wants the flathead for the coolness and I will allow it for the fun of crafting her in the art of flathead maintenance. My 5 yr old wants my Cadillac. She calls it her hot rod. I love my kids.

i wish my dad was like you guys.
when he saw that i was into old cars he did everything in his power to try and discourage it. He even took me to go see a mechanic friend of his whos missing 3 fingers and has had a transmission fall on him to try and scare it out of me. But it didnt work. 2 weeks later i showed up with my first cars 2 nash mets. Since then ive had 4 other old cars and hes finally accepted im not going to "grow out of it". I just think it was hard for him to accept that his son has no interest in cars but his daughter does.

I have 4 month old twin girls. When it comes time for them to get a car... and they want an old one... they will build it themselves and learn all the ins and outs of the car. I won't build it FOR them. My wife and I will help, if they want it, but they will do it themselves. :D

Being my daughters name is Lilly, I thought of someday building a 33 Willy's coupe and having it lettered accross the back "Lilly's coupe".

I have a 2 year old that loves to get into the 51 and pretend she is driving... This weekend is back to the fifties here in St Paul. I plan on hitting the swap real early to find the perfect pedel car. The wife gave me the AOK to spend some coin on a real one.. I am not too keen on all the repops... I will start with that as her first hot rod.. Later in life if she wants someting "cool" I guess we can do it!

I told both my girls (one is 7 the other is 9)the wife and I will buy them their first car but it will come in boxes and they will have to build it. The oldest said "Yeah!, I can't wait to build a car", the youngest said "Uhh....I'd rather walk" (little does she know she will also be buying her own shoes :D).

My daughter thinks all the cars in the shop are hers. She is almost 2.
Whatever car she wants, I will build a full cage for it out of DOM.

I'm puttin' a Kawasaki KZ1300 water-cooled 6 in an old style Mini. The fun part is going to be watchin' wifey and daughter-Zoe duke it out for ownership. Zoe's got the reach but momma's got experience.

Anything to get her off my Ducati. She gets on it and starts rockin' back and forth and gets this look on her face....... I tell her, "Hey, don't do that to my bike!"

One of mine is 4 months old and lights up when she hears motorcycles... and she giggles like crazy when I make motorcycle sounds.

I hear you! One of the reasons I said my kids are going to do it themselves is that my wife's father told her she could drive at 16, but only if she could prove she could fix it... oil changes, plugs, tires, etc... (of course, she later put that knowledge into figuring out, and removing, the speed limiter on her 74 Impala Interceptor!!). Her dad didn't want her getting stuck somewhere with an octopus who claimed his car wouldn't start (she could fix it) or because she was riding with a drunk and he was the only one who knew how to drive a manual trans car. OTOH, when our kids are old enough to drive, they will get a car with 2 bucket seats and no backseat! The Econoline is definitely out!

maybe a Munster's Koach clone for Lilly!

1972 VW Beetle. She's told me that would be her car since she was about 2, and now at 15 is is about to happen.

We're installing new floors, of course
Rebuilding 1600cc Dual Port with dual Webbers
    Freeway Flyer type trans mods
    Custom homebuilt bumpers
    Homebuilt interior
    Fully DOM Cage

She has already designed the paint scheme for it, and she is working on it right along with me, cuz I told her if you want to drive an old car, you have to know how to fix it. She does.

I don't have a daughter and hope I won't for another decade or two, but the lady and I (I suppose we're "going steady," been together for 4 years now) have thought about it before -- and we definitely want a little girl at some point. And I already decided I'm building her an Imperial, with a roll cage, four-wheel big discs, and Lexan in the windows. Everyone wrecks their first car -- hell, I wrecked my first car three times in the first six months or so. So it might as well be able to withstand a demo derby. :-D

  29. My girl is six and the only reason she likes my old truck is that it has no seatbelts. My wife has a nice 87 Fiero GT that she will get. Or my Merc. Or my hardtop. The merc and hardtop should be done by the time she gets her license....:(

She is NOT getting the sedan delivery......

  30. besides a bullet proof chastity belt? My little one Gianna, 3.5 years old is down here every day and knows more of what is sitting down here than my wife who refers to our 54 dodge panel as the box truck...Gianna calls the Riviera the Rivi Rod, she calls the panel the panel truck and knows that my newest, a 37 international pickup, is a project...so based on her understanding of what is what I will build her what she wants as she is already strong willed and opinionated and knows what she wants and of course the bullet proof chastity belt when she's old enough to need one...yikes I am not gonna sleep tonight
