Hey guys, I'm looking for help finding a good car hauler to rescue our '41 Ford pickup from Ohio and bring it back to California. The truck had been driving around the country with the Independent Truck Co. Summer Skate tour before the ****** gave out. The tour had to continue, and the truck is now stranded and awaiting transport at a garage in Quaker City, Ohio and we need to get it back to Ramona in CA. My dad's a regular on the HAMB (under Detonator) and he said he thought there was a guy on here called Ben D who might haul cars. Thanks in advance.

What trans is in it? I've got a few TH350s. You can leave it at my house, I'll be real careful with it!

Personally I'd prefer to fix it at home in my own shop with my own tools on my schedule and not be rushed to get it done and hope something else doesn't go wrong on the trip home. And with the price of gas these days it will likely be cheaper in the long run to just hire a car hauler who is already making the trip...shouldn't cost more than $500 to $750 I would think....

$500-750 for a trans-less truck from almost WV to CA? Seems awfully cheap to me. Then again, I'm not thinking of a big car hauler, I'm thinking of a 1-3 car trailer. Usually $1/mile.

That, or buy a transmission off a dude, pay him a few bucks to put it in, and just toss the old one in the back and drive it home.

Hell, a T5 and an adapter might be cheaper than a tow... and it's one hell of an excuse to put one in!

    Yea,
Thats near Cambridge on Interstate 70.
I bet it'll cost 12-1500 nowadays to haul it.
There are quite a few Hambers in that area.
    But its your nickle.

The problem is the truck was following a skate tour, and the tour had to keep going with the team manager who was driving the truck, so it would mean finding a ******, possibly having to ship it, finding someone to put it in, then flying to Ohio from CA to drive it back.

Plane trip, ****** and gas vs car hauler ? Not sure what the lesser of two evils is. If you have the ****** installed you have to trust someone does the job correctly just by speaking with them over the phone, unless you are going to take a few days off once you get there to do it oyurself (hopefully the ****** would already be there), ship the tools, ship a ******, etc.... Those car haulers are dealing with brand new $30K to $50K and more cars a day...they would treat your car right if you find one with a good reputation.

It isn't going to be cheap either way, I wish you the best....hope it all works out for you.

Ha, we're actually going to auction it off at the next ASR skate/surf/snow tradeshow as part of Independent's 30th anniversary. And, I understand the logical thing to do is fix it and drive it home, but I can't take the time away from work to do it, and it would probably end up costing the company more in the long run anyway. By the way, this is not my personal car, our company bought this for Independent's 30th anniversary to tour around with the team. We went way over budget, and the higher ups frankly don't want to write more checks if something else happens on the way back from Ohio.

There is a guy out of Kansas City called Johns Car Hauling, his rig is equipped with a hydraulic tow winch and we use him for ebay cars and such that dont run. He is always in that area and we have shipped a car from Delaware to Arizona with him for under a grand. Beleive it was the $700 range. Do not have his number, but found him on a google search. Good luck.

Like I said - there's a bunch of HAMBers out there - you should change the ***le of this thread and try to rustle a few retired ones from out that way up. Have 'em put the T5 in, send 'em a couple of prepaid gift card Visas in the regular mail, and have 'em make a road trip out there. The prepaid gift cards would cover parts & gas, and you could get 'em plane tickets home. It may well be the same amount as any other option, plus it would have a T5 then!

Well, that and some HAMBers would get a free road trip...

If you come out east from Ca and p*** through Pheonix empty, I've got something I need hauled from Pheonix to Tennessee and maybe it could off set your costs a little.

  21. $500-$750 to haul a non-drivable car over 2000 miles? With fuel at $4 and up a gallon?

It cost us $1500 to ship a non-runner from NY to the west coast when gas was $2 a gallon and diesel was about the same. From Ohio.. subtract 1/3.

You're better off to slip a good used trans in where it sits and drive it back - the gas cost in that is negligible because you were originally going to do that anyways.

I had dinner with Skot (who originally built the truck) last night, it's just a t/h350 but the issue is you have to pull the motor to get the trany out and you sure as hell don't want to have some hick tow company or gas station touching it. I'd say get it home then fix it.

Oh yeah, agreed anyone that claims they're a Gullwing guy (Big Ben Excluded) has some issues.

Yeah, I climbed around it enough to figure that was probably the case before it went out on the road, and I didn't mention that the air ride is now ****ed up too. I appreciate all the offers for fixing the ******, but we need to throw it on a trailer and get it home. It's looking like $1200 might be the magic number

Yeah, but for some reason they make us do these things called budgets, and then have the nerve to try and make us stick to 'em. Ha, good thing they didn't know about hot rods when they signed off on the check, we went over budget on the truck in no time, and the hits just keep on coming! Now go buy some new stage 10's so we can afford a new ******!
