  2. I'd have to disagree on several points. I don't know Doyle but what I remember Doyle didn't build it, he traded a T bucket for it. and he didn't own it very long either. his dad worked for Dean Moon and built the injected 283 to replace the 265 that was in it. he left the Hydro.
Bob Porter got it he dropped in a injected 327 375 horse and 4 speed after 2 days driving. later added the vette independant rear suspension and torsion bar front suspension. then a aluminum headed 427 L-88.
I don't know Tom either but heard he pulled the L-88 in favor of a milder big block

the 58 is more of a custom than a hot rod but cool car just the same

  8. Well a little more investigation came up with the following written by Ken Gross, arguably one of the best Hot Rod historians alive;
    The Doyle Gammell Coupe
Doyle Gammell's three-window was actually built by Dick Bergren, who bought the car in '62, chopped the top 3.5 inches, laid back the windshield posts, filled the roof, and upgraded the 265-cid Chevy V-8 with Corvette fuel injection and a four-speed Hydra-Matic. Polished five-spokes with Inglewood slicks and a dragster-inspired Moon spun aluminum tank between the front framerails completed this coupe's badass good looks.
Bergren traded the Deuce to Gammell for a T-bucket because Bergren wanted to join the L.A. Roadsters. Gammell and his father (an engine builder at Moon Equipment Co.) installed a bored-out 283 Chevy, reupholstered the car in thin black pleats, and Ed Roth (Gammell's then-employer) artfully pinstriped it.

The next owner, Bob Porter, had Blair's Speed Shop cram an L88 427 and Corvette IRS in it, then Porter fell on hard times and the coupe was damaged in storage. Tom Schifflea bought it in '92, repainted it purple with red-orange flames and redid the interior in white tuck 'n' roll, as shown here. Current owner Bruce Meyer commissioned Bob Bauder to restore the coupe to its revered, early '60s Cordovan Brown guise.

    This by writer Jeff Tann:
Doyle Gammel was very open about how this ’32 came about and is pleased with the accolades the car has received. In 1963, Doyle built a T-bucket and was driving it every day. He lived in Sierra Madre, California, and was working for Ed Roth in Maywood, California, which was a long drive every morning. Doyle was married at the time, and his wife was pregnant, so he really needed a more practical car. In his travels, he met Dick Bergren, who really wanted to get into the L.A. Roadsters, so Dick wanted to trade his ’32 coupe for the roadster. The coupe was an extremely well crafted car, so a trade was made. To finish off the deal, Dick even threw in a ’56 110 Triumph motorcycle that was painted to match the ’32. A deal was made, and Doyle was the new owner of the three-window. Doyle admits that Dick Bergren was the builder of the coupe, but he received the recognition after it was featured in a magazine article.

In 1964, Doyle was attending Pasadena City College and was heavily in debt to the hospital where his daughter was born. When car enthusiast Bob Porter made him an offer for the Deuce, he had to accept it. Bob told him that he would give him $1,900 and a ’57 Ford convertible for the coupe, and that was the last time he saw the car until the 1974 L.A. Roadster Show. The coupe was repainted black, was running a big-block Chevy engine and had a Corvette rearend, but it was the same car. He talked to the new owner, Bob Weaver, who said that he had pursued the car for years and was able to purchase it after Bob Porter was killed. He said that he had been inspired by the coupe after he saw it in an article in Rod & Custom magazine. Doyle had been away from the hobby for about 10 years and didn’t even know the ’32 made it in a magazine. He wasn’t really surprised, though, because his T roadster was photographed in 1963 but didn’t appear in the magazine until 1965.

So it would appear that it is known as the Doyle Gammel Coupe because he was the owner at the time it became famous! Bitchin car no matter what!
The original chop was reputedly done by Jim Caulfield.

Milners coupe. An older guy told me to go see AG when it came out because he knew I was getting into cars. In one of the first scenes, when Milner pulls up to Mel's, I was hooked. Not so much on the car, but on the fact that it was so different from all the other cars. I researched it and discovered hot rods. I have been screwed up ever since and I have loved every minute of it.:D

  13. Robert Lomas' Coupe is one of the only cars that I have ever seen that I wouldn't change anything about it... It's all around perfect in my opinion!

  14. Ducazau's RPU is in Street Rodder, either current or last issue. Chirs Shelton did a great history and current owner story.

Ok so it is not the most original thing in the world, but the pete and jakes rod shop California Kid car. The Tv movie came out when I was a kid I thought that car was the coolest thing ever and I still admire it. Seeing that car was one of the first things to get me interested in cars. My dad always had an old car around and after watching that movie I started going out to the garage and driveway and asking questions and handing my pop wrenches. Made some great memories and learned a lot. I still mess with old cars and hope to own a 33 or 34 ford 3 window some day

I can't say my fave of all time..its too hard to choose, because the cars that I'm into have influenced me in many ways...Like someone else has said, it depends on era, genre, etc...

It would be a toss up for me between the Robert Lomas coupe and my homie Alex's model A. Both are so perfect in their own way.

  21. Guy Ruchonette's '34 3-window coupe.

It was an owner-built nostalgia racer that I saw at Sacto and Sears Pt. in the late 80's/early 90's. It was running a blown & Hilborn-injected 392 Hemi, P'glide tranny, home-made tube frame, 4" chop, semi-channel, bright orange paint, and a license plate that proclaimed "ID WINN".

Gray Baskerville covered it in HRM in Sep. '88 ("I'd winn, You'd lose") and again in '93 ("Baddest Street Rods of all Time").
