So now that im near-finished with my big overhaul project on my 58, i was thinking of repainting it. I had a can of flat-white paint laying around, and i did the fenders and they looked pretty cool, but then today i did one side of it white and eh... doesnt look that well :-/

of course i dont have everything i want for it yet, like wide whites, chrome rings around the rims, etc.

but im just courious, how did some of you choose the color for your car?? did you just know what color it should have been from day one, or did it take some time to really think it out, and the paint ended up choosing the car?

cuz i have no idea what color i want to paint my 58 fairlane. i did rattle can flat black before, but it faded away about 5 months after i did it. dunno if i wanna go through that again.

When we painted the truck the second time (after I chopped it) we had decided it would be red. My wife and I went past every car lot in the area checking the colors on new cars and then went back at night to see them under the lights.

Color choices can be made by the budget too, some colors are a lot more expensive than others and this is in regular automotive paint and not the custom paint.

Just keep working on it to get it as close to perfect as you can and one of these days the just right color will jump out and grab you. People give guys strange looks when you chase them down and ask what the name of the color is on their new car though and the sales people at the motorcycle shops really get snotty when you ask them and then tell them you want to get the paint for a car. Anyone know where I can get the formula for Honda Goldwing Magenta?

When in doubt, I look at other cars in the colors that are being chosen...for example, a while back, a customer wanted a Mustang painted back to the original forest green. I searched a couple of websites, and we ended up going about 3 steps lighter with a toch of gold flake in it. Vidoro green , to be exact.

the car looks like a million bucks!

research never hurt anyone except lab rats!

I was sitting at a stop light oneday in my truck ('94 Chevy Silverado with a '67 425 olds) and right next to me was this bright orange '07 Mustang. I looked over at the guy smiled, smashed the throttle to the floor lit up the rear tires and launched when the light turned green. That was the day I got beat by a bright orange mustang. And decided that bright orange or to be more exact "Grabber Orange" was what made that car go faster, not that at the time my truck only had the stock Olds 2brl. So when I got back to the shop on Monday I called my dad's paint guy, and said "Hey Mark, I need you to order me up enough paint for this old ugly chevy out here." And of course being the salesman he is he said "Okay, would you like some flat black for the accent stripes on your 442 Style Hood too?" and I said "Yes that would be nice" So a few hundred dollars later I had a couple cans of paint. I just need to find time to paint it now. I did the fenders grill, and hood, man does it look sweet. So next time you see a car at a stoplight with a cool color race it if it wins...It was the paint that did it, and that's what you need to have the extra edge on the compe***ion. And after you paint your ride and you get beat by some dude in a Honda Gold Wing Magenta Pick Up, you know your next paint scheme.

ya seems like everyone gets their inspiration for color from other peoples cars.

so did i with the flat white. i got mine from El Vazquez on here, he has a 57 ford ranchero, bare metal top, primer white body. looks insanley sick. doesnt seem to flow on mine.... maybe its because its not all done yet?

ive also seen other's flat/ suede blacks and they look incredibly sick and slick, and wouldnt mind if mine looked like that. i just need something that gives it that extra "kick ***" factor i guess

Oddly enough, the guy who I buy my paint from chose the color. He asked me what color I was gonna use and I said I wasn't sure. I asked him if he had any ideas for me and he smiled. He said there was a color he always wanted to see on a '33-34 and he'd give me a quart to try out. I said sure. So he goes in back, mixed up that color and brought it out. It wasn't until then I was told what color he had in mind. Until then, he wouldn't tell me. He just kept saying it would look great. What he ended up giving me was 1960-67 Jag British Racing green. I used it to paint my gas tank and fell in love with it.

Lesson learned here, listen to an experienced paint guy.

Choosing a color can be a real difficult decision for most folks. I usually know what color I want it to be because I have a visual image of the car BEFORE I start or the project. I usually know out it will look finished and I just have to work and make it happen.

My wife says I am stuck in a rut ... I like Black with red wheels. The Black and Red from a 90 Chevrolet Silverado works for me. ( I had a new 90 Black Silverado ... but almost bought a red one  )

    Hey,
Watch out, when picking a colour by name, when making a paint choice. There was also a Ford colour called Verdero Green, used
on early Mustangs, and other big Fords. I know of at least two,
very different "Washington Blues", both called "Washington Blue''
"Brewster Green'' is another colour that has many variants!.
Always get a paint match from a sample, not a name. Paint names
are for ***ot decorators and house wives, not for "real world' usage!

Everyone knows the wand chooses the wizard! The car determines the paint. Otherwise you'd run around searching for the ideal car to paint the color you want?! On the other hand, I've seen some street rod colors that would make a hot rod run and hide. It's your car, paint it like you want-I respect that, but pink? robin's egg blue? and when did orange become acceptable?? :) ((Oh, I think your car has to be orange to get into Street Rod Builder-or at least it did when I stopped subscribing.)

i think it needs the side trim back on there and hahaha yea the hood and fenders and grill would look good to im sure.

idk, i think that color is sorta growin in me, to bad i photoshopped it, i like that exact color green, dunno if a body shop could replicate that exactly.

and if your talkin about the spikes in my grill, the guy before me had them. he said they're nothin but old caulking-gun caps screwed into the grill of the 58, simple as that :) they crack easily though!! hate it when people go up and touch them

    Hey,
Check out both HOK (House Of Kolor) & Dupont's "Chroma" paint
lines for a colour of that nature. That colour shot over a yellow base
would fly off the job, and into your face!

My feeling the owner picks the color and the car determines the shade of that color.

Gotta rememeber that the same color is hit or miss depending on the body.
most modern colors will work on the 58, due to slab sides and big curves. Something like a 41 Willys or a Zephyr is all curves, and a Jeep or panel truck is more flat.
Size makes a difference too. Darker colors make 'em look smaller.
Dark if the body is perfect, Light shows gaps and seams.
Best bet is to find pictures and real cars that are similar, and see how you like them. It doesn't have to be the same color, but you should be able to cross off at least some of the spectrum....

Just don't use Baby Blue. Got a friend with a 58 Ford done in Baby Blue. Too light for a car that size. Fugly is the only word that comes to mind.

House of Kolor paints used to have a computer program where you could choose one car type and then select different colors to see what looked the best. The one car package wasn't too expensive. They also sold a multi-vehicle package for builders that cost a few hundred dollars. Their website use to tell you what year and model cars were available in the single vehicle package.

2 tone it in Wimbledon White and a nice metallic lime green. That way you get both colors you want. I think the 57-8 Fords always look good in 2 tone schemes, almost a requirement.

yea about the baby blue color, ive seen some done that color, hate those light pastel colors!!! look horrible on a 58 ford! i actually got some rattle can olive-drab today, and this lime green color thats almost similar to my photoshop pic.

im gonna try those out maybe tomorrow. cuz that white isnt cutting it for me haha. and i agree, i think the bigger the curves on a car also determine what kinda color it should have. flat cars just dont look good with certain colors, big bulky ones with lines look great with certain schemes

As a 57 Ford owner, I completely agree. A 2 tone job is a necessity. However, how that 2 tone is executed is up to you. A simple body/roof job like my car is tasteful and looks good. Panels and scallops also look natural on the 57 and 58 fords because you have so many great stock body lines to follow.

As far as color combos... white and gold would look pretty spectacular. Especially if you get the factory trim on there with the gold inserts. Don't fear shiny paint. It's easier to maintain and lasts longer than most flats with no clear. It doesn't make you a goldchainer, it makes you a builder who takes pride in his car and wants it to look nice. If you feel that your body work is questionable, avoid dark colors and break up big panels with trim and a busy paint scheme. Look at Sean's 57 Fairlane. The paint kicks so much *** you don't even realize it's a 4 door

The reason your car lacks pizzazz is because you're missing a lot of key elements. Stance, wheels/tires, kustom work like shaved handles or kustom tail lights... all these play a huge role int eh car's at***ude. Once you have it all together, it will come to life in front of you

Bear with me a sec. Take the 2nd car as an example. You say you hate the pastels, but ditch the 5 spokes, slam it, nose, shave and smooth it out, then apply with some panels...now it's a bad sled and not some old man cruise in cliche

okay i take back what i said about 'pastel light colors looking horrible' that is a nice 58. i definatley give my props to the owner of that beauty :)

but idk, im not a pastel/ light color guy (ironic i painted mine flat white right now to), but yea im sure i'll find the right color. im more than likley gonna do it a green color. if this lime green spray paint i got doesnt look to good, i got an olive drab, and i know that'll look fine

Olive drab??? Are you building an army truck or a '58 Ford Kustom??

If you're looking for pizazzz, olive drab isn't going to help much. Don't try to rewrite the book, go with something proven.

Joe post a picture of your Ford, I have none handy.

His is simple and easy. No metallic, no super expensive paint, and it pops and stands out. You might not have to copy him exactly, but take it as an example.

yea olive drab isnt fit for my 58. i did the rear part of it today, didnt look good at all... all in all if i cant find the color that suits me i'll go back to black for the time being. there's this nice suede dark blue that looks pretty cool, maybe i'll try that.

whoever joe is ya post a pic, inspire me please lol
