  3. Welcome Hydrazine Boy. I have a request: Could you please start a thread and tell us a few Hydrazine stories? I'm sure the statute of limitations has run out since those days. John Hogan, who worked for Don Maynard, the Greek and Schumacher got me hooked on the Hydrazine saga. IMO, the BEST years of racing history were the 60s.

    Thanks and again, welcome.

The late Tony Nancy never built anything other than the cleanest and best engineered machines. This roadster cemented his place in drag history and was followed by many other outstanding racers, all masterpieces and all with his trademark stitched into his self-upholstered drivers seats...a seahorse. The woodie push car was Tony's upholstery shop vehicle.

    Hi WCD-

Yeah, my dad did run down south quite a bit- I'll ask him about those events.

The Proud American F/C was run by a different group of guys.

I'll try to post some more pics. of his cars, I have tons of Ron Birch, Dave Kommel, etc. photos from this era.

    Best,
    Dave

  11. This is for "Little Eliminator" and the cars were handicapped off the
national records. This is the '63 March Meet and the '56 was a C/Gasser at the time. Ran a Rochester Injected 327 and ran low 12's
@ 112-115. My dad doesn't remember who won. They did runner-up
to Fred Texierra's Willys in '65 in a heads up B/Gas race. The Willys
has been found and is being restored to '65 specs by another Hamber. We found our '56 on ebay in '04 and are restoring to '67-'68 version. We are gonna race ours again after 40 years, I can't
wait. My earliest drag race memories are riding on my dads lap up
the return road @ San Fernando and the blue haze from the blue plexi windows when I was 2 or 3 years old. Stay tuned Ric.

  12. If I had to guess, I'd bet Tucker won. Hugh was a sly one. He worked the "handicapped by national record" thing like a pro. About that time the record for AA/SR was in the 10.0's. The Tucker & Stoll car was easily capable of mid 9's, but he never bumped the et record at an NHRA points meet where records were established. When they replaced the Olds with a Chrysler, the thing was super consistent. They won the Winternationals street elimionator about 3 straight years. Maz, SWC, and the Herrera's, were completely frustrated. By 66 Old man Herrera begged me to let them put Manuel's AA/GS Chrysler in my roadster for an NHRA points race in Carlsbad. They wanted to bump the AA/SR record down where it should have been to level the playing field. I looked at the size of that huge blown hemi, and how much cutting it would have taken on my car, and decided to pass.

  13. I worked for a guy named Dick Gazan on and off '84-'94. He had
many pictures of the roadster and told me that he helped rebuild the
whole car while working at B&M. I have a video of Dick winning little eliminator at the '62 or '64 nationals @ Indy. The chrysler came from
Dicks old top fuel partner Tom Daughs I believe. They ran a fuel dragster named the "Freedom Machine" out of New England. That car was found in the late 80's and was restored. The funny thing is my dad and Gazan never really got along and I didn't know they had
ever raced each other until Nick Arias lll sent me a copy of it.

  14. Dick shared many cool stories of touring with the roadster, KS Pittman, SWC etc, he even got to drive SWC's B/GS a couple of times. Dick's last stint was with John Lombardo from the mid 70's to
early 80's. Our shop was in Sun Valley and we had lunch with Frantic
Fred Badberg, Randy Scoville, Jimmy Scott, C.R. Axtell, Doane Spencer and a bunch of others weekly. Lunch was always fun.
I live in W. Covina (South Hills) we'll have to get together sometime
    maybe a shoot the breeze.

This is supossed to be a picture post, not a conversation thread!

  16. As soon as I figure out my scanner I'll post another one of the
'56 @ San Fernando. Meanwhile quit yer whining and practice what
    you preach.

  17. Well excuse my ass all to hell! No more comments, just pics, got it.

Ow! That hurts! actually I'd be buring it up if not for the movers losing all of my photo collection from 1963 on back in Jan '07 when I moved from Tulsa to Bowling Green! I told them they could tear up or lose anything they wanted, just make sure they took good care of my photos; guess what the one thing that didn't show up was? All of my photos, family since before my kids were born, racing since 1963 all my aircraft and flying photos, everything.
On top of that, you've just tricked me into writting an essay in a picture posting thread!

  19. I understand this is a picture thread, supposedly pictures of history for us all to share. For me, I enjoy reading the history that goes along with the pics as much as the pics. From the questions that some of the pics have generated, I thought others did too. You younger guys will have to excuse us old farts if we ramble on somtimes. Ask me what I had for breakfast, and I'll give you the deer in the headlights stare. But the 60's, I can talk your ear off!

Remember Dean-a picture is worth a 1000 words-so just post one picture and then use those 1000 words to TELL us how it was. The stories give life to the pictures. Talk our ears off.

  21. I'm 44 in August so I don't know if that is "old fart" or young guy, but
AMEN! to the history that goes with the photos. Here we are as of today. 68_12_sb.jpeg

By 66 Old man Herrera begged me to let them put Manuel's AA/GS Chrysler in my roadster for an NHRA points race in Carlsbad."

Dean, please expound on your encounters with the Herrera's. All of their cars starting with the purple Anglia, the 2 Austins and finally the Opel GT were competetive good looking mounts. Thier tactic of sticking one of their blown V-8's to up the record is an ingenious tatical ploy.

  25. Only one other Herrera story about their generousity to other racers, but as I've been told this is a picture thread.

And you are absolutely right. Their stuff was always show quality. I appreciated that, as I always tried to do the same.

Personally, I love to read the history behind the photos. That's part of what makes this the greatest thread in Internet history, especially for those of us who are not always familiar with the background. Please, no bickering-- this thread is well over 200 pages long, I'm sure another couple hundred pages can be accomodated!
