buying a house, they turned part of the garage into a bedroom. I'll be knocking down the walls and turning it back into a garage. Should I leave the carpet? Anyone tried it, might be alot better then laying on the concrete, especially in the winter. Its not berber or anything, its the real short stuff like what you'll find in a school or office building.
I had the same deal. Use the carpet until time to get rid of it. You'll know when that time has come.

Take it out before you move in. It will look and smell terrible in no time, so take it out when the garage is empty. Coat the concrete with a commercial grade sealer. Done. You can always save a clean piece of you carpet to throw on the ground to use as you need it.
There are many reasons why carpet shouldn't go in the garage and cars shouldn't go in the bedroom. Mazooma1's suggestion is exactly what I'd do.
Ha too funny this comes up right now. We are moving soon, and the house has an attatched 17x24 or so garage which Im going to make my lil' shop. Wierdest thing is it had half a wall, friggin wierd paint (kids handprints) etc. STUNK, water damage...wtf was there a cult in here beforehand? Turns out the garage was converted to a "showroom" for the dudes fish sale company after he lost his aquarium store on the local highway. I cant wait to knock down, insulate and resheetrock and paint it white! Already has a ton of outlets and lights in it.
Most of my freinds have carpet in their garages......I tend to think it holds stink and moiusture.......I kick over a can of latex once a year its cheap looks good over the winter.....oh yeah it Don't burn either.
Autobilly's got it right. Carpet don't belong in a garage. It attracts dirt and moisture and that does not help old cars. Cut the carpet into a couple nice man sized, 6' x 3' chunks to lie on when you're working and get rid of the rest. And definitely seal the floor with epoxy. It keeps the cement from weeping and it is a breeze to sweep up. I used U Coat It with a clear chem resistant top coat but any epoxy concrete paint will be better than nothing.
When our 3 kids were little we carpeted the garage and used it as a playroom for them on weekends and wet days. The carpet was real thick commercial stuff torn up from a bank floor when they were renovating, and it was free which made it even better. The only time we struck a problem with it was when it was raining and we wanted to put the family car away in the garage. Water from the wet car would make the carpet damp and smelly. Problem was solved by simply towelling the car down before we put it in the garage. Oil drips etc were taken care of by a drip tray lined with carboard, and it sure made lying under the car in any weather a lot more comfortable! Cheers, Glen.
I use carpet runners in mine. Buy them cheap at the garage sales. Good to lay on when working and you can roll them up when welding. Soon as they are messed up I throw them out and get another.
Put some of that velvet stuff on the walls too!!! And maybe a disco ball,I hear that they are coming back. Negative on the rug. Seal and paint the floor>>>>.
Shoot it to the curb..when it gets soaked in oil and fluids..and solvents..and than you come home to it burned down, that will be the day after you should have removed it. When laying on my back under cars, I use cardboard, and that 1/2" blue or pink foam in the wintertime works great..when your finished working wipe it off, stand it up in the corner, and use it again next time. As for the cardboard, if it gets shit on it and wet, toss it & start over. carpet in a working garage floor is a disaster waiting to happen. now if your a gold chainer in your "show" garage thats different
The only carpet I have in the shop is throwaways from carpet installations. You see them out at the curb when people get new carpet and it's free for the taking. Most times there isn't even wear patterns in it. just cut it to convenient shapes with a box cutter and when you under the car throw a piece down. When it gets dirty............out to the curb and the trashman takes it away. Frank
Mold, mildew, moisture will be a nightmare. Save a 4 x 6 piece to lay on when under your car. Throw the rest out.
I gave a buddy of mine our old basement carpeting. His knee locks up once in awhile and he will take a tumble. So to protect his mellon, the carpet make him feel better about falling. But it's time for some new stuff. Winter takes it's toll.
Wouldn't have carpet in the garage, although I bought a Vette from a guy who had carpet on the side he parked the Vette. He also wouldn't wear the shoes he walked in, to drive the Vette. Needless to say the car was immacualate. Don't lay on the garage floor anymore. Don't have any problem getting on the floor or under the car, but getting back up is a real bear sometimes. Since I'm apparently in the "Express Lane to Geezerville" my lovely Bride bought me a four post lift. Gotta love a woman like that, and no, she hasn't any sisters.
I use commercial grade "glue down" type carpet in mine but I don't glue it. I keep it cut back about 2' from the over head door. A floor jack works fine on it, if I need to weld or cut I just back it out on bare concrete. I've had carpet in my garage for at least 10 years, but I also have a 32" TV, stereo, fridge, dart board, you see it's my "man cave".
I have roughly a 10'x12' piece in the garage..It's nice and a pain in the ass at the same time. To weld of grind, you have to do something with it, either take it out or roll it up, when something leaks on it it's pretty much there for good and does smell plus it look's like shit once it gets dirty... Once the piece i have there is gone it won't be replaced. I'd rather have a few small pieces to lay on that can be rolled up and stored for use instead of a large piece that's a fire hazard... I'd pull it and coat the floor as was mentioned.. Tony
ok carpet will go about this floor sealer? I dont know anything about it, any book I could grab from the library? or just go to home depot, tell them what i want to do, they'll see me some cans and some method of applying it? first time home buyer so i've been getting all sorts of home maintenance books from the library. Didnt look for a garage floor section, didnt think of it.
Oh man, I knew ther was a better reason for taking the carpet out of the garage!! It was my dog Sanchez. I couldn't get him potty trained and he would just go crap everwhere>>>>.

I have a friend who had carpet in his garage before it burnt to the ground !!! He had carpet under his street rod that he had for a long time . He was using a drop light ,the kind with a regular light bulb, and had been working on his fuel system and dropped the light and the bulb broke and caught the carpet on fire. Before he could put it out ,it was to late and the whole garage went up in flames. I would get rid of the carpet and for anyone still using regular bulb drop lights get rid of them to and get a floresent bulb one . I would not want someone else to loose there ride to.
If you can't live without carpeting, just glue a 12"x12" piece on each foot. You'll have wall-to-wall wherever you go.
