Just wondering what kinds of Horns everyone is running. I've got a 61 EK Holden with no horn as i pulled it from a paddock.. so if anyone could post a sound clip of your horn and what its from that'd greatly help. Also theres a Horn on the So-Cal Speed Shop website.. anyone have it? Anyone have a sound clip of it? Cheers, Nick.
VW Bug horn, no relay required. Y'all know what that sounds like. Recently I picked up a set of four horns out of a mid-90's Cadillac. Very loud, sound a lot like the diesel train horns that traverse the town where I live. Thinking of running both on my 31 A roadster.
The "Chrome Horn" is the only one the mindless idiots in Detroit pay any attention to these days...but luckily, my car has one!!
Star Guitar, I went back and looked at your post and will have to say that I have never bought a new horn from a store or vendor. I either use a horn off a doner rig. find one with a sound you like that will fit in the space you want to put it in. I've got the wolf whistle that my dad bought 50 years ago and never installed stashed somewhere in the boxes in the shed. It will probably go on the 48 when it goes together. On the daily, late 70's Cadillac horns that as C9 mentioned get attention when needed. They do take some room under the hood though. I don't what a cute little beep beep when I want to get some cell phone packing idiots attention, I want loud.
Big ole air horn from a semi. It's awesome when going by the bars near the train tracks late at night. Scares the **** right out of people.
My Es*** currently has an "A-ooga" horn that it was built with 30 years ago. I plan to replace it with something that will get some attention from the idiots. If you hit an A-ooga horn when some ***** cuts you off, they just wave and think "what a cute little car", not realizing what they did.
My buddies got eight different horns in the the shop trying to figure out which one he wants to keep.. from regular to the ooge, has a semi air horn, and a locomotive horn< things insanely loud. I'd go with the locomotive...just for ****s and grins, with the ooge as a more people friendly back up.
When I had a 650 Triumph chopper back in the mid 80's, I didn't run a horn. Got busted for it once. The cop asked where the horn was. I yelled "OUTTA MY ****IN' WAY" at the top of my lungs. For some reason he didn't see the humour in that.
This was one of the easiest decisions I had to make. I'm driving a plastic bodied car, with no fenders, no top, 3" wide tires on wire rims, the damn things weighs a little bit over 1,600lbs. and most importantly, I drive it all the time and everywhere. So, when it came time for a horn, I went to the auto parts store and got the loudest one I could find that would fit. I can't tell you how many times I've had to get the attention of a twit on a damn cell phone before they hit me. As was mentioned before, the "Ahooga" horn is cool, but I didn't want some jerk thinking I was trying to say hello, when I was really trying to tell him or her, to get the hell out of the way.
I have Two Horns.....steering wheel ****on has what they call Hiway blasters...fairly loud...LOL Then a ****on on the floor to the left of the high beam switch which is the Aooga you can say hi and srew off at the same time....
Ahhhh Ooooo Gaaaa !!!!!! I do like the mid 90's Caddy Horns though. I have a friend who has a Sedan DeVille, man that sum ***** is loud!
the 5o's got the 2 stock and an 'El Toro' lever horn the 58' running the two stock and two 56' buick. the 56' has a little blue air horn the 49' had a motorcycle horn, was as loud as a car one.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who obsesses about **** like this! My old Dodge pickup had a beep-beep horn when I bought it. Sounded cute but commanded no attention, so I bought some Caddy horns off the evil site. You guessed it, they didn't work! So when my blood pressure settled down I spent the money to buy a pair of the expensive Fiam horns from California covers. They're fairly loud but really sound like ****. I guess I'll have to spend a Saturday morning down at my buddy's junk yard with a battery pack and try to find something I like. Mid 90's Caddy, hmmmmmm
The Dub horn takes very little room. Reason for two horns is, I'd hate to honk the Caddy horns in a parking lot. Sometimes a quick, not-too-loud beep from the Dub horn does it. Even so, the horn is seldom used, can't remember the last time I used it for serious. I think it was a couple years back when a guy was backing into me and I had nowhere to go. The Caddy horns would have been the hot ticket there. Been thinking of mounting the Caddy horns under the body pointing backwards. There are times when it would be handy. If you go looking for the Caddy horns you'll find then inside the front fenders, two per side. One bolt per side and a 12v plug in wire will remove them. Look at the forward area of the fender and you'll see a t****zoidal shaped hole in the sheet metal. Right side is behind the battery. Easy to remove once the battery is gone and I have yet to see a battery in the car at our local junkyards.
Cheers for the responses guys. At my local yard.. theres well over a hundred old cars (Mostly Holdens) and i'd say most of them have a horn.. What are the chances of them working though? After sitting in a paddock for 20+ years..? Just plug a battery into em?
i dont even know what they sound like but a few harley riders i know took their horns off their bikes & gave them to me. i think i had 4. i p***ed 3 onto other guys wanting horns & kept one as they are nice chrome & small & look nice.
