Is it possible to build a traditional Hot Rod in just 24 hours? We’ll we are going to have a good crack at it in August. A team of Kiwi Hot Rodders, including some HAMBers, are travelling to the USA from New Zealand in a few weeks time and will attempt to build a Hot Rod in less than 24 hours from what we find at the Swapmeet at Hot August Nights, Reno (NV). We know Hot August Nights isn't a totally HAMB friendly event, however it is a sister event of our own Beach Hop Festival www.beachhop.co.nz . The car build up is being filmed for a do***entary to screen on the Fox Sports Network in the last ¼ of the year, and there will be a live 24 hour webcast during the action. We then plan to take the car to Bonneville for Speedweek and possibly make a p*** down the salt. We have been working with the BNI Board for some time and a tech inspector will be at Reno to guide us to ensure the car is safe. After Speedweek we are heading to the HAMB Drags for some fun and then visit as many car events as we can over the following weeks. So that’s it in a nutshell. A bunch of Kiwis fly ½ way around the world, put a Hot Rod together in 24 hours, then take it to Speedweek and HAMB Drags for some speed action. Sound like an adventure? We look forward to meeting as many HAMB members as possible during our travels – make sure you say hello. Noddy
You should be able to get a good stock (resto) deuce roadster pretty cheap then toss everything not necessary off it, maybe swap in a good later Merc engine maybe juice brakes and 16" steel wheels and I'd say you'd be good to go in way under 24 hours!
Sounds Kewl If you need someplace to leave the car when you head back to kiwi land, I think I can make room in my garage Gary
we try to do a kind of the same at our roaddevils show in weil am rhein but in 3 days BUT we go a very unconventional way with our citroen b2 . Wo we need a lot of fabrication. I think 24 hours for a simple hotrod should work fine
now that sound like fun, i am sure it can be done with no problem with enogh man power, keep us informed on this as it has some real good ideas behind it
Yes! We are building the car at the Swapmeet inside the Reno/Sparkes Live Stock Centre - no sheep jokes from the Aussies please! A ton of planning has gone into this project over the past 9 months. We are permited to walk the Swapmeet before it opens to the public to get an idea of the layout and where items are. We will also have a list of commercial vendors before the Swapmeet so we know who has what and can ensure they have it there for us. We've got a great team - some real characters. It's gonna be a blast! Noddy
There's a whole slew of HAMB'ers that throw REAL HOT RODS together in 24 hours, sometimes sooner. Just like back in the day, bro! Good luck!!
I'll check with Tampa Digital Studios who are doing the filming for Fox Sports and let you know... We'll be updating the HAMB on the progress.... Noddy
Yeah that's the way underarm bowlers would do it, we on the other hand will build from scratch, buying one part at a time from the swap meet and fabricate the necessary brackets and components from raw steel . I doubt we will find an affordable running flattie at HAN, it is a bit of a street rod event. If necessary we will build a ch***is from scratch and put a gl*** bucket body on it, but we hope to find something steel and a bit more traditional than a bucket. Hopefully we can just buy a discarded project and big drivetrain pieces like front end , motor trans and diff from the swapmeet... that are pretty complete . We will buy tools and equipment and all at the event ,obviously will have to get some machining (e.g. driveshaft ) done locally and the safety gear like a roll cage etc will be added after HAN and before Bonneville. The challenge is to buy the parts from the HAN swapmeet and ***emble them into a driving hot rod in 24 hours. Team of six gives us a week of man hours. After our tour the intention is to sell whatever we build , pay back those who have funded the deal and donate the left over money to a local charity...Save the Salt or something similar.
Yep thanks for that ,everybody has been really supportive , and we really appreciate that. Yeah just like back in the day, everybody pitching in and doing it , all for one etc, I have done a few hot rods like that, but it will not be how rush jobs were typically built. This hot rod will be built up to a standard... we will have a SCTA tech inspector at the event making sure that what we build will be OK to run at Bonneville. BNI has made an exception on the entry in that we cannot know what we will have for the pre entry, until after HAN. We have a history of fast builds ***ociated with the Beach Hop Event in New Zealand which our team leader organises. www.Beachhop.co.nz This one was built in a week by a team of six 15-18 year old students and tutor at the local high school, only working during cl*** time and they had never built a hot rod before. Hey Jeem, are you any good at drawing Hot Rods ? How about some sketches of a hot rod which we can't describe yet because we don't have any idea of what might turn up? Hey we are going to need T shirt designs , and some big *** logos for the side of our car ... any ideas ?
The school kids pulled that roadster apart last year at the Festival - right down to the bare ch***is. They then put it back together - 1 hour 14 minutes and 17 seconds - jump in and drive it away!
I sure hope it is on webcam. If it is I'll be watchin'. Sure sounds like a great idea, lots of fun and it gives the sheeps a day of rest. I'm not Aussie so I figure I could say something. I think it is doable if you have enough help.
If you are going to buy all of the parts over here it won't be cheap. I am sure it can be done in the time alloted but old steel is like trying to buy gold today.
Hey - you want to try buying parts down here in New Zealand!!! You don't know how lucky you have it..... Noddy
Good on yah Noddy & Leakers, take care with that side kick of yours "The Kreeper" he's sure to create havoc where ever you leave him
the guys from killbillet.com did a model a in a weekend and then drove it home 1200 miles, theres a lot of coverage on it on the web. Not bustin your balls, but why try to do it in a day? why not take a little longer (like a week) and make sure all the kinks are worked out and not rushed just for the sake of it.
Awesome project - many other Kiwis are envious!! If anyone can do this - a group of Kiwis can!!!!!!!! We will all be watching.
just remember that the guys doing the build will be buying everything needed over there , they will be stepping off the plane with just there personal goods
