I was told tonight that Paul Vanderly just found the factory AFX 64 Comet his dad raced for a mercury dealer here in south Mississippi with his dads name still on the side of it. Any info on this car other than the two pictures already in this thread?

Hey, Dino! Not quite ready for a rendering. We've done some drawings of it with the stretched nose and will do some preliminaries to forward to you. I'll also get some pictures of the cars from back in the day whose paint techniques I'd like to use. Some of the old fuel cars had really cool stripes with candy fades (two different base colors most likely) on the candy stripes.
I've been so busy developing this wind turbine project the Dart's been sitting for a few weeks. I'll get back to it after the second week of July. I'm also building the tooling for the stretched '66 Dart fenders. Talk to you soon!

I'm not 100% sure but I believe that is the ex-Seaton's Shaker '65 car ... and I think it was driven by a female.

There are a bunch of good pics of '62 409 cars in this thread. The '63 Biscayne was built a few years ago to illustrate what Chevy *might* have done after the Z-11 and if the racing ban hadn't made everyone worried about keeping their jobs. Hayden wasn't too happy about the lettering on the trunk though....

The trunk lettering says "Hayden's Last Ride".

  19. can i show a pic of my new car here? taken june 29.
i have been working on it for 5 years and collecting parts and decals for about 30 years. car was built to be a replica of the Sox&Martin "friendly chevy" but after Ronnie passed away, Hank restoring the "sister car" and all the following confusion by folks who think the 2 cars are 1. followed by a terrible die-cast, i changed my mind about replicating Buddy Martins car and made it an original paint scheme following the 63-65 theme. all the decals are pre-1968 as far as i know. the dealer is defunct and i used to work there. Custom Automotive is me as are the Walker Headers.

this is not a clone, nor are there any Z11 aluminum parts, it's just a raceable, modern built, chromemoly caged, BBC powered racecar that goes easy and safe 10.40s @ 130 mph and is meant to be a tribute to the white chevys of the day and the men who drove them.

Hey Bob that is a great looking car. Wonder how it would look with a set of Cragar S/S wheels? Were you at Bowling Green?

    Bob,
The car looks great! What you did with regards to paying homage to the real cars is right on! love it. The chrome steel wheels are right too ... maybe silver ones in back and nose-high stance ... ? just my two cents, your car. Great work Bob.

Only problem I have with this AND others is the computer cut vinyl lettering. It didn't exsist back then. To be totally authentic, find a Real sign Artist that hand letters with paint & brush. I do this all the time .

Not a old time restored race car or clone. Just a '63 Galaxie put together by me and my friends. Just getting it on the road...no time slips yet. Gonna be a fun car for sure!!!

I agree Dino, but collectors have driven the price of these cars up so high folkls are just looking for ways to keep their "investment" value high. It appeals to buyers and probably to appraisers more if the lettering is 'temporary'. I knew a guy in tulsa who did a real nice resto job on a goat, painted it black, and then had the whole car 'wrapped' in black vinyl so it would help protect the paint from dings and chips. Good idea for sure, just seemed a bit wierd to me.

  25. thanks guys, this has been my dream since 63 when i was 5.
the car was built with copying the Sox&Martin "friendly chevy" in mind. but after Ronnies passing then that horrible metal die-cast, i decided to just go with something original, but follow the basic theme they all seemed to have then. next time out will be Beaver Springs for the "York US30" reunion drags.

most of the decals are originals that i have been saving for more than 30 years. my favorite is the Isky "polydyne parrott" those are 1965.
the "jenkins competition" i got from Bill in the 70's
the "champions" are copies made by Chuck from the originals i have from 1966.

i have been planning this project for a long time. thanx again. see u at the races.

above is the print from over at the 409.com site.

i've spent my entire life building racecars. my family raced the "Bounty Hunters" mopars until the "Bob Banning Dodge" funny cars at the end.
I worked for Malcolm Durham when i first bought my red 63 SS 409-425 Impala that i raced then and still own 32 years now. i worked for Chick DeNinno forever and after all that time, the "legends of racing" are mostly family friends. (ask Wally) all my hero's are drag racers.
this car is all the things i cant do to my 409 car. once it had a Z11 top-end and real Z front bumper. went 12.20s @113 back in the early 80's. i sold all the Z11 stuff but still have the car.

Joel, you knew about this years ago, thanx for your kind words.

Andy, I love your Galaxie. I may letter my 409 car anyway.

Dino, I now what you mean, and i have a guy named Nelson Grimes.

nite flyer, no bowling green but i wish. no cragars on this car. i have them on my 409 and with the uni-lug centers, they suck. wouldnt want to try'em with slicks and 130+ mph. i agree, they would look good.

Thats WEIRD alright...the Wrap bit...he's causing more harm than good. Guess he never checked the adhesive duribilty by year factor and if its on too long ,it will dry out rock hard and have to be sanded off. Not to mention he just locked & sealed up fresh paint that has to breath to cure and in general. He's been in the kitchen too long with Saran Wrap. Most Wrap material only has a 5 year outdoor duribility life before it starts brecking down. Dumb idea. A quality paint job will last a lifetime if properly taken care of. Oh by the way Most Sign paint (one Shot, etc.)IS removable off of clearcoats....easy off oven cleaner- done right. theres some tricks to lettering for LESS adhesion too.

Ok if you GOT TO HAVE IT removable...find a sign guy that uses vinyl BUT makes it look like hand lettering the way I do . Create black & White Camera ready art by HAND- paint and brush --Scan it ,then cut it in vinyl. From 15 ft. away nobody knows. No cookie cutter "fonts" in styles a hand letterer would never use.See Race Car lettering at my site for examples.

I agree Dino!. Nothing looks dumber on a 60's or 70's race car, be it a clone or restored, then vinyl lettering. If you think your going to leave that shit on for a couple years and scrap it off without messing up the paint, well have fun. It really makes my ass ache to see guys search out the "correct" parts for years then finish off a great car with some bullshit vinyl. For gods sake hire a sign painter!!. If your so worried about the value of the car don't put ANYTHING on it, that would look better then stick on shit!!!.
Sorry, but I really hate that crap!!!, save the vinyl for No Parking signs!. Check out my site and look at the pictures of Lee Smiths A/FX car and the 69 Chi-Town Hustler funny car. There is nothing like hand lettering. Sorry again, just trying to keep this dying art alive!!!.

Hey Bob! Glad to have you here, and very cool old Chevy (and I don't even like Chevies!)
I always liked the old Bob Banning Mopars, and just met Chick Deninno last year at PRI, very nice gentleman.
So you're making headers? I was going to do that myself on my dart along with my top fab guy, but might be interested in having you take a shot at it.
