So I figure I would give you guys an update on the Coupe. Haven't been able to work as much as I'd like on it, but this is what I got done lately.

Posted a thread about making my own gas tank and got some really helpful feedback. Thanks fellas!

This is what I came up with.

Figured up the space I had to work with, ended up being roughly 10 gallons. Should be enough, by the time I run through 10 gallons in a trip I'll be ready to stretch the legs anyways!

Went to the sheetmetal shop and had em bend em up. 16ga. 1 top, 1 sides/bottom, 2 baffles, and 2 endcaps.

    Started tacking everything together...

Ok, looking good. Start weldin' her up!

Had the holes cut at the sheetmetal shop, one looked good the other looked like they got a beaver after it! Placed the sending unit and cap in the holes and marked the mounting studs, then welded in some grade 5 bolts.

Put the lid on before welding it on, and check fitment. Ok looks good.

Time to make brackets. I used some 3/4" angle and rounded the ends so it doesn't look so much like, well, angle iron!

I welded them to the subframe first then bolted the tank side on and put the tank up in there and leveled it out. Tacked on the tank side brackets, pulled the tank and welded them up.

Check to see if it fits again... Ok weld the top on after it get's a thorough cleaning, and a good coat of oil inside. everything looks good, time to paint it and install the hardware and bolt it in. Worked great!

I dig this old 70s Jag flip top cap, it's got a little plate that mounts under it saying "Unleaded Fuel Only".... thinking about changing it to say "Ethyl Only".

Chaddilac you do nice work. Is the tank supported by the frame or the body subframe only?

Well I originally had a rusted out subframe, so I pulled it and replaced it all with square tubing, which is really strong. So the tank is mounted to the subframe. Thanks Blackout!

Awesome job on that tank...I know what you mean about stretching your legs after the 10 gallons!
Been there, done it, and still got the sore knees to prove it!:D

Uh yea, I won't go into that... but I could have bought one from the guy on ebay that builds them to your specs including pressure checking it and a gas cap that you don't have to remove to fill up the tank! and he'll put whatever holes you need where ever you want them.

And yea, taillights will be a pain so I'll have to make sure I keep good bulbs in them!!

Dave... actually what you're seeing is my inner subframe built outta square tubing, the tank is flush with it. here's a pic so you can see where the tank sets.

I would have to agree with all the above comments. Very cool. Can't wait to see it on the road in the near future!
