I got an email from my longtime friend asking if she could take a few pictures of my car and enter them into a magazine for a contest. I said sure, and got close to calling a few buddies to set it up for her. But then I asked what magazine it was for.

She said, "My dad works for Rebel Rodz."

And I shit myself. Should I enter my fine vehicle into a shitty kulture magazine and put up with the chance it might be in something as bad as said magazine for a good ammount of cash? It's a good friend of mine, so I'd be happy helping her get 300 bucks..

EDIT: I found out it's not Rebel Rodz, but actually Backfire Magazine, a spinoff of rebel rodz. Still equally stupid.

My take on it is, after many years of owning cars and owning my own business is that " ANY exposure is better than No exposure".

I am sure you are proud of your car, but to see it in a magazine read by our peers is the ultimate compliment.

Personally i have never owned a car too good to be in any magazine.
    Just another thought :)

    just say no!
if we give into these magazines then the terrorists win.
doing it just for the money seems to be in poor taste.

    *ahem*
You may want to do a search on the word "angry"

  7. That would backfire on Backfire, causing its demise.

I'd never allow one of my cars to be seen in OSR, Rebel Rodz, or any of those other shit-rags.

You are judged by the company you keep.

I just found out about Backfire magazine when thumbing threw a Savage Tattoo magazine at work today. There just seems to be an overwhelming amount of shit floating around these days.

As far as entering your car, I don't think it going to make much difference. The Green Grenade was featured in OSR once and it's a pretty bad ass coupe. Just don't buy the magazines and hopefully they will go away.

If you've met Bubba and seen his operation, it puts weight behind what are otherwise just 2 dimensional words on a screen. I'd read those words a few times and let em soak in.....

My 2-cents worth. Out on the HAMB "main page" I found this:

    Hokey Ass Message Board
Spreading the gospel of traditional hot rods and customs to hoodlums world wide...

Spreading the gospel means sometimes going places where it hasn't been/isn't being heard nor welcomed. Preach to and show the "unwashed" that the Traditional way IS a good way to do things.

That said, go ahead and enter. Worse that can happen is that they see that there's an alternative to dropping a bunch of mismatched steel on a frame and calling the result a "rod" and that the alternative is good!

It's $300 - do it. If the cars in that mag are so crappy, you'll win. The more space they fill with good cars is less space for rat rod Jeep Cherokees. It's not that big a deal anyway, a month later it'll just be an old mag headed for the flea market.

Everyone here hate OSR but alot of people are finding their way here because of that magazine. I remember picking up a copy of OSR and they had the Green Grenade in there and I thought it was the coolest thing I ever saw.

  13. I don't know, it might cost 300 bucks to remove poop stains and snail trails left behind by one of those big fat snags they always have crawling all over everones shit. Not only that, but it wouldn't be worth 300 dollars to me to see my car on the same page as one of those cretins with the big douchey, chisel hawk pompadours. That shit is embarrasing, everyone in my hometown sees that garbage at the newsstand and directly links me to it because I drive old cars.

putting your car in that mag is support for that mag,
not an advertisement for the H.A.M.B.

They are just pulp garbage. Makes me ache to think that may be all the education some people are getting about hot rods and customs.

Poor Writingz. Blurry picturez. "Greaser" Goofballz. And liberal use of the term "Rat Rodz".

    Painfulz.

  16. Really guys, I've been sick of the same ol Street Rod mag for over 10 yrs. SuperChevy got pretty old pretty quick too. I like these new mags, when I'm seeing something fresh everytime I pick one up. There for a while......seemed like all there was to look at was a Boyster or Fooster.

And I like pompadoors.......bahh. Carl Hagan

The above is sad, but true. It's even worse than bringing back an old circle tracker... Old folks and old cars don't get the respect that they deserve.

Go ahead and do it. (you KNOW you want to) Any of these clowns that tell you not to are (for the most part) just jealous because no one wants to put THEIR car in a mag. It ain't THE RODDER'S JOURNAL but it will be cool to see your ride in print. Hell, you can always tear the pages out and shitcan the rest of the magazine!

    Some perspective, perhaps?

Tribal behavior is easy to spot...tribal icons, lexicon, and behavior render tribe members readily identifiable.

A significant part of tribal behavior involves basing ones values in the context of what the tribe believes, since value within the tribe is defined by ones zealousness to adherence to the core tribal beliefs...accordingly, objectivity is of no concern, and could be seen as a sign of dissension.

So...how does that apply here? Well..and whereas I agree that the magazines in question are all sub par...the ONLY reason this question came up is because we, collectively, believe that we might somehow be violating a tribal tenet by appearing in a publication that we feel doesn't adequately support OUR tribes values.

Let's look at it objectively, shall we? Unfortunately, the only magazine I have here at work is OSR, but it's certainly representative. OK, so....objectively speaking...does anyone in "our" tribe see value in the magazine?

Of course they do. All you have to do is look at the list of advertisers. Coker, Rolling Bones (well, the "Bonneville" video, anyway), Lucky 13, Streamline Hot Rod Parts, O'Brien Truckers, Air Ride Technologies, Ron Francis, EMS, Bob Drake, Restoration Supply Co., Poor Boys, Honest Charley's...and more.

So...what's my point? You have a chance to see your car published...do you REALLY care about the opinions of your tribe-mates? Seriously...outside of THIS discussion, WHO CARES!

You have "known associates" (see list, above) that understand the value of being published. Having your car published is cool. Even in a sub par magazine.

Go for it. Everyone you know outside the tribe will think it's cool, and you'll be happy and proud. The only noise you're hearing inside the tribe is jealous or myopic teeth grinding.

Clowns? Jealous? Yeah sure. You're out in left field pal.

You know, maybe YOU don't mind being associated with cobbled-together shitpiles, ugly models, and the whole "we're so proud to be ignorant white trash" crowd, but please don't try to speak for the rest of us.

I wouldn't piss on a copy of rebel rodz, OSR, or any of the like, and it sure as hell isn't out of jealousy. Unlike you, some of us AREN'T in this for exposure, attention, standing in the car community, etc....

It's called having "standards"....check into it.
