  1. Uh, if you just came by that revelation you might want to stick to the nursing profession.

Whoa little buckaroo, You've been spending to much TV time with "Earl". I live in upstate New York, and or those of you not from the area that is any part of New York State 60 miles north of NYC. I have basically a Hot Rod shop and cater the the antiquer as well, I've have been doing this for 30 years so your cheese *** comment leaves a little to be questioned.. I'm sure the other guys in this area, Bones and Tucci won't appreciate your comment either.

Your request for donated stuff with the promise that you will put your name on a car is like farting into the wind, stinks. Why don't you go out and buy a welder and a set of torches like everyone else does, getting stuff for free really doesn't give you any incentive to work and sounds a like welfare hand out to me.

The suprising fact is that you say you have nursing experience and cant get a job! Well upstate NY is nurse poor , there are all kind of want ads in the paper every day for health care and nurse positions. If you cant get a job up here, you have issues that keep you from employment that you need to get addressed before starting a new career. If you think working as a nurse is demanding, wait until you accept money from other people for doing a job and their demands.

this is what my dad and I were told when we started our buisness..

#1 if you dont have enough capitol (money) to servive the first year saved up free and clear, chances are you will fold your tent by the second year
#2 be prepaired to not get paid for a few years.
#3 if you are able to make the "hump" (5 to 7 years) you might servive.
#4 you will work until you fall down than work some more and fall down again..repeat this process until you are dead.
    #5 dont hire friends!
#6 find good help, and if you find they are not good..get rid of them swiftly and professionally.
#7 get a tax..financial consultant you can trust.
    #8 get good insurance.
#9..I almost forgot..the customer is always right..even if they are an ***.
#10..absolutly no vacation..or sick days..your employees get umm but you dont.

good point 36-3 window..you need the tools first..at least what you need to start with.
and re-invest back into your company..thats why you sometimes dont get paid..because you need to spend it on equipment or repairs.
work your *** off..lay awake at night..and keep dreaming....you can do it!

  4. how have you been able to do "kick *** work" without these tools up to now?

sorry , i bought all my own tools

    Man,
I 've done the full time job, part time rod builder for about the past 10 years and officially closed the business early this year , It becomes to much of a "Job",plus you can never work on you own stuff , i have two "other" peoples jobs to finish up then i 'm done, Oh I'll still help a guy out and do a little wiring , welding or fabrication for them but no more turn key jobs !!!!!!!(except my own)

Keep building cars as a hobby and keep it fun. It’s not all fun and games to have your own shop. I grew up in my dad’s garage watching him s**** by just to keep the bills paid and he is a pretty well recognized car builder. Sometimes it’s just difficult to get paid for the jobs you do. My advice is just stick with nursing you will have a retirement that way.

I've done custom paint and airbrush my whole life as a "HOBBY" A few years ago the pay from my "hobby" exeded my day job so I quit and jumped in head first. I made a good living for @ 3 yrs doin it full time but it was no longer a "hobby/fun" it turned into a job. And it always seemed I was investing $150.00 to make $100.00? Now Im back to my day job and once again enjoying my "hobby"
just my 2-cents thanks for listening.

To improve my own karma I will give you all I have : advice. Get a job as a nurse, make big money, and save lives, and make sick and injured people more comfortable. Then work on your own car on your time off. Build an exceptionally beautiful, unique, and mechanically perfect car you can use as your adverti*****t of your skills. After your work has attracted some paying customers, and you complete their jobs to their satisfaction so you have some word of mouth proof of work that you do then buy the tools that you need and consider opening a shop in your home garage. After you do all that then ask the question about opening a hot rod shop. Keep in mind in a recession or depression the first thing s people let go of are their toys.

  9. Hey while you fellas are feeling so generous could someone stop by my place and build me a 40x60? I mean hell while you're donateing stuff you might as well set me up in a hobby garage.

I'll paint you name on my ****per and everything.

    So getting past the sarcasm.

    Here's how you do it:

Write a business plan and take it to the banker that you know the best.

Be sure you include things in your business plan stuff like enough cash to live on and pay your bills for the next 3 years minumum. Better figure on enough cash to cover illnesss just in case one of your kids gets sick.

Plan on working extremely long hours like 60-80 hours a week. So make sure your family is either ready to see you at the shop or not see you at all.

Be prepared to work on the neighborhood grocery getters etc. You haven't made a name for yourself and from the sounds of it you already don't get along with or like the local rodders.

Here's the deal and I'm not directing this at you alone. I see it all the time. Gee I can't find or keep a job. I know its because I'm a business man. Tha's it I'll just open a garage. and build knockout rods then I'll be famouse and live happy ever after.

You were already aware of all this before I mentioned it, right?

    I didn't think so.

If I could handle the blood and guts, I'd go back to school to be a nurse. My fiance works 3 twelve hour shifts per week. She has a 2 yr degree ( I have a 4 yr degree) and she makes more money than I do. I'd love to have her schedule... 3 days on, 4 days off, 3 days on..

  13. "The Secret, a pseudo-do***entary that explains The Law of Attraction ... The important thing here is that The Law of Attraction itself is real. But the arguments and explanations put forward in The Secret are alternately unscientific, mystical, nonsensical or just plain wrong. ... my greatest beef with the movie is the claim that whatever you sit down and imagine in this way, the universe will provide. Almost as if the universe is a big vending machine: Insert sincere wish here, pull out cold coke (or shiny new Ferrari) here. "

Lets see....... I work a regular 60 hour week to earn enough to buy some really nice tools and equipment so that I can send them to you and in return get my name painted on top of a car. Sounds like a winner... It would be sealed in clear coat though...

Stick with nursing and enjoy the hobby.

I was totally on board with this, I even had most of my tools boxed up and ready to ship. But I see everyone else is down on this poor guy, so I guess I am going to have to back out. It's not that I don't really believe he can make it, it's just that I don't want to be the only name on the roof of his car.

    Under clear caot of course.

Poor misguided 28 year old, you might want to rethink your plans after your balls drop or when gas drops to $2.48 a gallon, whichever comes first.

Let me tell you, most of these guys are sugar coating it, being in the business isn't nearly as good as they make it out. Most of them are just sugar coating it so you'll come aboard and keep them company. Ever heard the saying "misery loves company"?

    ARE YOU LISTENING ????? HELLO!!!!

wish you the best of luck, but I don't know if you're going at it the right way...expecting people to hand you stuff is kinda lame...you need to build your name, and work your *** off...Not bad mouthing or trying to crush your dream...its not easy like you think, as others have said.. good luck

My fiance says they call them 'murses.'

I've heard some places will pay for a place for you to live, provide a car for you, etc

Not to many handouts in this buisiness. Lots of hard work. You stick to nursing, get a good job, and stick some money away. You can build a shop up fast with a good income. I was going to keep my tools and opinions to my self, but I got ****ed in. Good luck with your familly. It's tough having sick kids!!! You need to be there, not in a shop 16 hours a day.

I think I would rather empty colostomy bags than block sand anyway, stick with mursing.
