Art & Inspiration Photography Contest for HAMB Cars

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by C9, Jul 9, 2008.

  1. Instead of just posting a request for photos on a particular subject I thought we could bring out the best if we had a small photography contest featuring HAMBr owned cars.

Not gonna be a whole bunch of rules and a big time camera isn't required, but clarity, composition and focus are paramount.
As well as sticking to the theme.
Said theme being, hot rods in interesting places.

Doesn't have to be out in the middle of nowhere, but it doesn't hurt.
And sometimes the middle of nowhere can be a freeway after midnight.

Street running is part of the theme, but keep it legit.
If you want to run race-o photos, make sure they're on a legal dragstrip.
Basic information about the car and location are sufficient.
A guideline is shown with the sample photo below.

Keep the photo within reason size-wise.
650 DPI in the long axis will do it.
We want to keep the post width within reason.
If you post overly wide photos it drags the text width out and makes it a bitch to read.
One photo is all that's required and all you can post.
People are allowed in the photo and the car can be moving or parked.

The photo opening full-size with the post is important and required.
If you don't know how to resize and post to PhotoBucket or the like so that the photo opens when the post opens, drop me a PM and I'll help.

Artsy-crafty can be cool, but to keep things fair submit a photo that hasn't been photoshopped other than to brighten up a dark one or to bring an overly bright one down to reasonable.
Cropping is allowed, but the car is the main thing so show all of the car that you can.
You do want to show the area the car is in and I'll post a couple of photos as examples.

Summer of 2006, 100 degrees F and looking north on the two laner between Pinon Pines and I-40 east of Kingman, Arizona.
32 Ford roadster powered by a 462" mildly built Buick.

This photo could be improved by showing more of the road to the left so keep that kind of stuff in mind.

Shown here, the 32 at El Dorado Dry Lake December 2007.
An ok combination of showing the car and the dry lake.

If the area is offbeat enough, it makes it more interesting to talk about it a bit and a little history about the photo and the reason it came to be doesn’t hurt.

Such as, "El Dorado Dry Lake is just south of the Hwy 93 Hwy 95 intersection which is out of Boulder City, Nevada to the west a couple of miles and about 20 miles east of Las Vegas.
I ran the 32 up to the dry lake to see how some HAMBrs were doing with their LSR car, but once there it was evident the lake was far too rough to run a low car at speed."

One more example and this one falls into the not acceptable category.
A bit of a bummer in a way since it’s my all-time favorite photo of the 32 running the countryside, but it doesn’t make the cut since the whole car is not shown.
Taken the same day as the first photo shown above.

Prizes go to the car owner.

First prize will be an autographed copy of The All American Hot Rod which is an anthology with a number of writers doing one chapter each.
I was privileged to be a part of this book.

Second prize, an autographed copy of California Hot Rodder.

Sad to say, since this isn’t a democracy I’ll be the sole judge.

Whining is allowed, but only a little bit.

The photos remain your intellectual property and will not be used for anything other than this contest.

    Contest closes Sunday 07-20-08 @ 0800

    Izzat clear?
    Hope so....

Does it hafta be new photos specifically for this contest, or can we dig something out of our archives?

This will be a cool post. There's some extremely talented photo'ers on the HAMB.

  15. Car is a different color now, but this remains my favorite picture of it.

This was taken on the roof of a public parking ramp after a Friday cruise night. The high-pressure sodium lights contrasting nicely with the lingering smell of unburnt hydrocarbons...plus the "Compact only" sign was a funny touch!

C9, This is a great idea!

This was at the 2008 Jalopy Showdown.
    After my two hot laps.
I thought I was gonna get black flagged after the first lap but Lynn Paxton was signaling me to pick it up:D. 5500 in 3rd at the end of the straights.
    This was FUN.

  25. Not actually a real car. It's the Vipers car club's AA/FC (FC stands for Food Coupe) at the '05 March Meet. Built by Francis Lewis. Designed on his necktop computer. It has about 6 foot of grilling surface, a 3.5 Cu yard ice chest and a burner for my notorious Hydrazine Flash Chili.

  28. I thought we could only post one pic. Please clarify, C9 as I have a few others, including a header flame shot of the 15oz Coupe.

  30. It's up to C9, Todd. I'd hate to have to choose between yours. I LOVE the dusty, in the garage shot. And the one in front of your vintage pad is sweet also...
