If they were sold at the York street rod show a bunch of years ago I still have them. If I remember right you have a very nice black 40 coupe.

Here's the Halibrands I'm running (4.5" wide on front). My brother sold me these magnesium wheels with a story that goes like this:

Halibrand first made these with no holes for sprint cars. Others talked them into putting holes in them for brake cooling.

These wheels were the first generation kidney beans. If you look on the back of the wheels, the kidney shape has a ridge on it. People liked the ridge, and the next kidney bean design had a ridge on it.

I call these second generation wheels, or first generation kidney beans. Anyway they have been on race cars mostly, and have a dual bolt pattern (wide 5 ford, and I'm not sure about the other pattern, as I just have wide-5 hubs.

Cool wheels. I think it's kind of neat how the Halibrands evolved over the years. There's an informative article here: http://www.roadsters.com/wheels/#Halibrand

Be careful referring to your bolt pattren as "wide-five" as most would assume you are talking about the 1936-39 Ford design which also became a standard for oval racing "safety hubs".

I just don't want to see you order some parts using that terminology and get the wrong stuff.

  9. Yep, they're a set of Ian Splatt's early 'Dragaway' wheels. He changed the name to Dragway at some point.

Not surprising, as 'Bounty Hunter' was his car. :)

    Great looking Altered.

It's still running, well bits of it are anyway. It got wrecked big time and there are some of the original bits on this car.

for the longest time , till i actually had a pair . i thought there were a lot of different styles of the halibrands...i had never seen the backs of the sprints and kidneys and no windows ....always went looking but never found those wheels...:D ...used to see them on afx cars and on the front of the california kid....now i'm a little better educated on the mag wheel thing....:D brandon

I really like these wheels.....I have a pair of 15x7.5 ET mags that look similar....the windows are a tad smaller, but have the raised lip around 'em. The centers are as cast with a polished rim....

Did ET make the wheel in a narrow version?????

  17. Josh - sounds like you have a pair of ET-III's. They made the 7-1/2" and 8-1/2" in 15's and a 14X6" The windows in the 14's were larger than the 15's. Never figured out why. ET also made the 16" two piece rear wheel without the drop center. The 15X8-1/2's are really scarce. I sold a pait last weekend to a guy in Ontario. I have 4 of the 15X7-1/2's polished with knock-offs. I ran them on my '40 Chevy convert for many years.

Not vintage, but here's a set of new (and dusty) 15 X 4 ET III's without the bolts.

Man I'd kill for a pair of these!I have a pair that are spindle mounts but would rather be able to run good brakes. When will American pull their heads out and realize there's a market for these?

    Hello all,
I have a set of five "Torq-Thrust" style rims.Is there an easy way to tell if the rims are magnesium? I know aluminum polishes up easily and magnesium takes some work...Aside from that?
    Thanks!

Try the vinegar test. Pour a very small amount of vinegar on the back side of the wheel. If you see bubbles, it's magnesium. Or post a picture...

I was driving down a back road near Philo Ohio when I spotted these in the store front window of a Studebaker parts place! I spun around and went in to take a look.
The very old tag on them read "Early American Lemans Wheels 5X4.5 bolt pattern Real Magnesium $600" He also had the original metal caps, screws and lugnuts.

YES I took them home! :)
